Sand Hollow GC review

Huge fairways making if difficult to miss them wide. Very large green complexes but they were contured to a degree that reading them was tough but fair. Did not like the bunkers because of the use of red sandstone and not real sand. The sandstone plays more like dirt and there were large pebbles in it. This is the only reason I did not give the course 5 stars. The back 9 was spectacular in terms of views of the surroundings

SW Utah Gem

Terrific track located in SW Utah. The back 9 has a number of truly awesome holes carved out of the side of the red cliffs. Keep the camera handy.

Go ahead... have a little fun.

Due to a frost delay on the championship course, our group wasn't able to make our second tee time of the day. Instead, the staff at sand hollow was able to squeeze us on this 9 hole Links course... a good compromise for our scheduling issues.

The surrounding views are every bit as stunning as on the big course, but don't expect the same excitement from the golf. This is a pretty straight forward little course... as the Links name might imply. You'll find very generous fairways and far fewer elevation changes than the Championship course.

What's not lacking is fun! It's quick, you can be aggressive on almost every shot, and (especially if you're coming off playing 18 on the other course) you can relax and enjoy taking in the views.

I wouldn't play this course on its own necessarily, but I'd highly recommend making time to play all 27 while you're out at Sand Hollow. It's a nice facility.

18 holes of desert paradise

Red Sand! So cool. Really a stunning looking course. The setting is wonderful and the staff was very welcoming.

We had about an hour frost delay, but staff did a great job getting things moving afterward.

Like other courses in the area, I found the greens to be very difficult. Fast and slippery. Very different than the greens in TX.

I enjoyed this layout. The par 3s were all fantastic. Really enjoyed the round, despite playing terrible. The scenery alone is worth the price of admission.

Check it out!

A day at Sand Hollow

I love this course! Starting time of 11:30 AM so the course was not busy. A little warm yet (in So. Utah), but the weather is cooling quickly and the wind was moderate - shifting, with 5-6 mph breezes. The fairways were in very good shape, and the greens were very consistent. Staff is always polite here. And they've added ice-filled coolers to the carts in the past year.
I had a couple of lucky approach shots that gave me birdies on holes that are usually a problem for me (like #6), so I was in a pretty good mood throughout my round. They have pushed a few of the white tees forward - and have maybe overdone it a bit in this regard. Another minor gripe is that the GPS limited carts keep you from access to your ball - sometimes for no apparent reason. I'll ask for a handicapped flag next time out.
This is a "must play" course in So. Utah if you are ever in the area.

Worth playing

... just to experience the back 9.
The place has the look and feel of a muni. Front 9 was ho-hum but the red cliff back 9 saves the course. Conditioning was
fair but could be much better. When I saw the ATV rental kiosk on the drive up the lane to the course, I thought a planned peaceful golf outting would be shattered by noise, but thankfully no one was using them - so it was peaceful.
The course could be so much more of a destination if the owners put the emphasis ($$) in right places.
On a windy day - bring balls!

A must play experience

This is a must play. The 15th par 3 tee from between the rocks is one of the best par 3s in the country. The front nine is a good layout while the back 9 is spectacular. My 2 complaints are.
1. Pace wasnt good and the marshals dont seem to care. Group in front of us was slow the hole round and it was empty in front of them.
2. A couple of greens were rough and the rest were just ok. They have fungus issues really bad on 1 and 10.

Spectacular course in great condition. Very payable as fairways in general are quite wide. Tricky around the greens. All four of us agreed this course is in the top 10 of all courses we have ever played.

Good experience

Fun course in great condition. I wish they had utilized hills/cliffs/rocks more. Front 9 is pretty plain. 10-13 are a blast. Then back to pretty plain. Course was in fantastic shape. Very challenging greens/pin placements. Enjoyed my round very much, just kept yearning for some elevation changes/cliff features.

Bad treatment by golf pro

I had a small complaint that I took to the golf pro. He was very rude to me and said I was wasting his time. I told him he didnt need to treat me that way and I would like to speak to his superior and he said he has no superior and said he can treat me anyway he wants

Much more than just Eye Candy.

The back nine at this course has 5 holes that will take your breath away. Don't get so wrapped up in the eye-candy that you forget there is a course to play. The holes are as much fun as the eye candy is to partake of. This is a great layout with a great variety of holes. The routing goes in all directions, so a one or two club wind adds to the genuine quality of the course and challenge. This is the type of course that you can play over an over again.
I found the staff to be extremely kind. They knew I wanted to get in as many holes as I could, so they let me out by myself first thing. Then they got me out for a second round. Perhaps it was the time of the year, but I played 36 in less than 7 hours. The course was also in very good condition.
As for the course itself, I know what I like and this is a course to love. The fairways were wavy like a links. A few holes played downhill and just a few played uphill. The variety of hoes is the key here. There was a great mix of drivable and challenging long par 4s. The par 3s were all very good-the 15th will blow out your mind-it has majestic scenery. There is one drivable par 4 on each side. Choose wisely, a miss can result in a double or worse. There is a good mix of dog legs in both directions. I really liked the first and last par 5. The first one has shot options from the tee and a green tucked in on the right. Once you make your choice on the drive, the risk reward comes into play. I thought it was a unique par 5. The last par 5 has a forced carry; however, it is over sand so if you are short, recovery is still possible. I found this to be a lost art in America-where penal golf is abundant.
As for that back nine, enjoy the scenery, but keep your mind on the golf. The holes are not push overs and need to focused on-easier said than done.
Overall, this is a genuine experience. If in St. George, this needs to be on your itinerary, hopefully you get the same weather, conditions and pace I got-It makes me want to go right back out there. No higher compliment than wanting a return trip.

Desert Links

First of all this is a 9 hole course. It is not the championship test that the 18 hole course is; however, it is a lot of fun and a great way to warm up. Greens fees are only $35 to ride and $25 to walk. Being a part of the resort, you have access to all the amenities-driving range, restaurant, glorious views from the patio, putting green, etc.
This does play like a links. It is very walkable and not a far distance from green to tee; especially if you play from the tips. The course also has wavy fairways and it plays firm and fast. I found that you wanted to use contours in the greens to move the ball to the hole and off the green you can putt or chip.
The course played in all directions, so the wind is a factor. Another element of links were the stone walls surrounding most of the course. Not the most challenging of courses, but a lot of fun to play. I used it to warm up after a long drive into the St. George area. For the price, it is well worth it.

6 Hours of Unnecessary Misery!

Three golf buddies & I took a 5 day trip to St. George, Utah to play the Red Rocks Golf Trail. Included in that trip was Sand Hollow, which we expected to be a memorable experience based on what we'd heard and read about the course.

Well, it was a memorable experience...but, not in a good way. As indicated by the title, it was 6 hrs of unnecessary misery. It's such a shame that course management was so poor that it ruined a great experience for us; and many others I'm sure.

First, I have to say that the course is visually stunning (bring your camera) and was in excellent condition the day we played; kudos to the course superintendent. All the rest is down hill.

Our tee time was delayed by 15 mins because they were backed up a bit; no worries, this happens at lots of places & is not a big deal. Unfortunately, it got much worse from there. By the time we got to 8, we were approaching 2.5+hrs and finally saw a marshall. His assurances that it would speed up on the back 9 were "hollow" (pun intended); it only continued to get worse. And, that's the last time we saw him, or another marshal or course employee for that matter; course management was nowhere to be seen.

What we did see though was 8 people on the same green in front of us, golfers switching 4-somes & carts as we waited on them, and lots of juvenile behavior. Even after multiple calls to the pro shop, nothing was ever done to improve the pace of play---for the next 3+hrs. So, despite having a 130pm tee time, we didn't finish before dark. Neither did the 2-3 foursomes behind us who just gave up and drove in around 15.

After the round, I went to the pro shop, and management was still nowhere to be seen even though I'd called them from the course. They chose to let the poor young man (Brian) at the cash register handle the complaint. Brian was very professional, which is more than I can say for his management.

I seriously doubt this is the level of service that Vanguard Golf Management Group expects and, it is my sincere hope they read this review and do something to prevent this from happening to other golfers in the future.

UPDATE: I’ve played Sand Hollow three times since my 2015 review and would rate it 4.5 stars. The course is still visually stunning and is well kept. The management is on top of things and responsive. I now view my terrible 2015 experience as an anomaly. Good on ya Sand Hollow!

Average retirement course

If you want scenery, drive south 30 minutes to Wolf Creek Golf Course in Mesquite.
Nothing to rave about here.
$!2 hamburger. Really?
$7.50 resort fee for staying on the property when all there was was a pool.
Green were so peppered we thought the greens had chickenpox.
Save your money otherwise the resort will take all of it.

Beautiful Course/Scenery

Wow... a feast for the eyes. Utah is beautiful, and this course, captures the beauty of the red rocks, landscapes and mountains.

Playing the forward tees still gave me a challenging day and outstanding breathtaking views.

The course was in great shape and we got around in 4.5 hours. Four pars on a course of this quality, made me very happy.

Memorable course with giant wow factor

I was trying to come up with a reason as to why I wouldn't give Sand Hollow's Championship Course five stars and just couldn't come up with any. It's very memorable, in incredible shape and the visuals here will blow you away. You get to the back nine, where there is a succession of elevated tees with views as far as the eye can see, and all you can do is say, "Wow."

Sand Hollow mid week

Very good course that we have played before. Unfortunately the back nine was closed for aeration, so we played the Championship front nine and the Links course. When I made the reservation Golfnow it did not indicate that the back nine was closed. But this worked out OK. The Links course was fun to play and if the back nine of the Champion course had not been closed we would not have played it. Good news is that we played for a very reduced rate. Still would highly recommend this course
