Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Tee to green the course was in great shape but I have never seen the fringes of greens in worse shape. I would rather they just burn the clumps of weeds and leave it dirt. At least it would be predictable. It's a small part of the course but makes a big, not so great impression. Greens were average thanks to a clear lack of ball-mark fixing by players.

Fringes in bad shape

Love playing this course, beautiful layout and extremely friendly staff! Just disappointed with the poor fringe conditions this time.

Horrendous

DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY PAYING FOR THIS ABSURDLY OVERPRICED GOLF COURSE. AT BEST, THIS IS A $30-$35 GOLF COURSE. On a scale of 1-5, the greens, tee boxes, fairways and rough are a 2. The sand traps/bunkers are a minus 1. Have no idea when the bunkers had any work done on them and looks like they have at least 6 months or more of weeds that have been growing in them. PATHETIC, ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC. BIGGEST WASTE OF MONEY I’VE EVER SPENT PLAYING GOLF.

Always a Treat!

Played all 3 nines today and would definitely give the nod to Monocan & Tuckahoe as the two in the best condition out of the 3. It’s always a treat playing StoneyCreek!

Shamokin Needs Some TLC

I've always loved played here and normally it's in great shape and a good value. The 27-hole course is divided into three courses, and they all play very differently. But the conditions are not consistent and that's an issue for the price being charged.

Tuckahoe 9 is in great shape, with freshly cut zoysia grass fairways and rough and well-kept bunkers. But the same can't be said about the Shamokin 9 with its Bermuda grass and weed-infested bunkers. It's a little embarrassing for a course charging over $60 for a round, you would expect better conditions on that nine, even with the restrictions from this crazy year. The lack of maintenance extended to the practice areas as well and it's not a great look for a course that normally has some of the best conditions around.

Subpar conditions aside, the rest of the round went well once be passed the 4-some in front of us that was on pace for a 5.5 hour round (they were nice about it). The mountain setting makes up for a lot and the staff is pretty friendly.

The restaurant was still closed for COVID so I can't offer an opinion on the food here. Come for the views and elevated tees, but maybe don't pay the full rack rate until conditions improve a bit.

Overpriced

Greens fee is too high, even using hot deal. Course should be in much better condition considering the fees that they charge. All grass areas are less than expected.

A Decent Mountain Course, But Stoney Creek Is More Fun

After years of playing it’s lower-altitude, public-access, sister course Stoney Creek, I finally had an opportunity to play Devil’s Knob. Due to weather and other restrictions, I was only able to get 9 holes in (the back 9) but I believe my overall impression of the course would be unchanged had I played all 18 holes.

The conditions here are just as good as those of Stoney Creek, with satisfyingly fast, smooth greens, groomed bunkers, plush fairways, and even rough and tee boxes throughout. No complaints whatsoever despite playing immediately after a serious downpour. The course drains very well and the lower traffic compared to Stoney Creek means there’s less wear and tear on the course.

The layout, however, was a bit of a disappointment. I was told the back nine was the more technical of the two nines and very often the signature and/or more dynamic holes of any given course are on the back nine as well. This being a mountain course, there was plenty of elevation change to account for. But the straight-up-then-straight-down flow of the holes and lack of creativity really limited the course’s appeal to me, and I am a particular fan of mountain courses. Yet here I found far less diversity in the holes than Stoney Creek and not a lot of thought process needed to route your way through the course. Many of the holes ran together in my mind with a couple looking almost identical. There was also a lack of scenic views that you might expect from a course 3000+ feet above sea level. At least my tee shots went farther.

The staff was excellent. Because of the storm (and other factors) I got to spend plenty of time in the pro shop interacting with the lady there and she was very kind and friendly and was diligent in keeping eyes on the lightning monitor to let everyone know when it was safe to go back out.

As this is technically a private course I generally refrain from giving the course a specific value point. But for the hassle of getting to the course (nearly 30-minute drive up from Stoney Creek) and the fact that the lower course offers GolfNow Hot Deals, I think I’ll stick to it from now on.

Bermuda on fairways not out yet

Course was good but was disappointing the on many of the holes on the Shamokin 9 holes the fairways had no grass and were hitting balls off bare ground.

Beautiful Valley Course

Beautiful course. Still dormant and greens had recently been aeriated, yet quite a pleasure to play. Greens were surprisingly accepting and quick. Pleasant variety of hole layouts with ample risk/reward opportunities with some awesome scenery.

My only issue was not with the course but with the price. GolfNow price was $39. When I arrived at the course they wanted to charge $69. After a little haggling I paid $49. A good value at $49, but this is the first time I have used GolfNow and the course asked for a different rate.

In Great Shape Despite The Weather

I was surprised to find this course was even open in the middle of February but I hot a GolfNow Hot Deal for the middle of the day with perfect weather (for once) and had the whole course to myself for the first 16 holes until I caught up to two foursomes.

Conditions were very impressive, of course the Bermuda fairways are dormant, the ground itself had drained quite a bit from the heavy rains and snow the week before. There was no standing water anywhere and only a couple small soggy spots. To put that in perspective, this was the driest conditions I had played on in several months. The greens were also in excellent shape, with very little signs of winter traffic.

The staff was friendly as usual and I was fortunate enough to get to play the Tuckahoe nine, everyone’s favorite here. The complimentary dry towels provided in my cart came in handy with keeping my clubs clean.

I will continue to sing the praises of this course until you all start playing here, you’re really missing out on a gem!

Needs help

I have always been a big fan of Stoney Creek at Wintergreen but the Monakin 9 was in really bad shape. It had obviously been underwater and the fairways had little if any grass. They should be playing this 9. It is a 27 hole layout so they should let this 9 heal. Always love this course but it was in really bad shape. As is should not cost more then $30/round
