The Club at Savannah Harbor
About
The Club at Savannah Harbor is steeped in Southern charm, offering dramatic views that span from the surrounding wetlands of the Back River to Savannah's famous Historic District. Sam Snead and Bob Cupp designed the golf course. Their ultimate goal was to bring to life the philosophy of "risk and reward." For example, a well executed shot placed near a hazard is rewarded with less club to the green or a better approach angle, or even both. The putting surfaces have gentle transitions to different pin locations, making them more traditional than modern. The designers incorporated another classic design element, the greens have subtle roll-offs or collars that fall away, a feature of golf courses from the 1930s and 40s. Golfers can also use the club's large, duel-ended practice facility.

Stuck behind SCAD Players
We were really excited to play this course - it had been on our radar for a while. We finally decided to make the trip to Savannah from Columbia, SC to play on Labor Day weekend because there was the $55/round promotion if you make a cash donation to Folds of Honor. I booked a tee time online for 3:00 pm. When I got to the course to check in, I was told my tee time was not booked (even though I had the confirmation email). The pro shop employee was not very understanding or empathetic to me but got me a tee time. When we went to tee off, the starter told us there was no one in front of us so we could go ahead and tee off. By the time we got to our second shots on the first hole, there were 4 players from Savannah College of Art and Design walking behind us. They were playing some sort of team game and they were teeing off from less than 100 yards from the hole. I was trying to line up my second shot and all I could hear were the SCAD players talking and laughing. We were going to let them play through until we realized there were 5 plus groups of 4 SCAD players behind us. After the first hole, we teed up at the second hole. As we drove to our balls, the SCAD players walked behind us. When we got to our second shots (which were further out than the place the SCAD players were teeing off from), the SCAD players WALK PAST US, talking loudly and laughing and stood at where they were teeing off. I was very annoyed with this. My fiancé said something to them about keeping quiet and being respectful. By the third hole, we had had enough. They were loud, obnoxious, playing way up our backs, etc. I called the starter and told him we were turning around and restarting our round behind all of the SCAD players. When we got to the 9th hole, all the SCAD players were waiting around at the green for their last group to finish. When they finished, instead of holding their team meeting away from the hole, they STOOD ON THE GREEN for 10 minutes as I waited in the fairway to hit my ball. It wasn't until I yelled "FORE" that they moved off the green. I would not recommend playing this course unless you can know for sure the SCAD players will not be there. They ruined our experience. Not only that but they left divots in the middle of the fairway where they were teeing off. Didn't fill them in or anything. Very disrespectful and left a bad taste in my mouth about the course.
Great for a deal
Great if you get a deal on it,
Fairways - A+
Tee boxes - A+
Greens - B- (runs like carpet, high, slow, and huge
gaps in grain can see the lines on the
green)
Staff - A+
Driving range - BEST IN SAVANNA
Course difficulty/ uniqueness- B
Very nice course
Excellent staff and facility. Greens need the heat to grow in a bit but good conditions overall. One of my local favorites
Greens
Played here last July and it was incredible. Today the greens were almost unplayable. We started played the 2 putt rule bc greens were so bumpy. Looks like a bunch of divots on the green (not aerated divots).
Frustrating trip to Savannah. Was hoping the price matched the experience.
Savannah Harbor
Love the course, fairways and tee boxes were perfect, fairways were plush and receptive of my clubs, probably the best in Savannah area. Only bad things I can say is the greens were not up to par, pretty bad shape, but they were working them, sand traps need new sand, it was like hitting on wet sand at the beach. I loved playing there!!
what happened to the greens?
We Played the course with some out of state guests in late January and the greens were in very good shape for the time of year. This time they were terrible! Something is attacking the grass. Lots of bumps, mini pocks, and chickweed made for putts that did not roll true. While the tees and fairways were still in good shape, the condition of the greens put a damper on an otherwise perfect day.
Not worth the money
The greens were really bad. It’s great they have a good driving range and people to help you with your cart and golf bag, but how about take one or two of those guys and work on those greens? I can manage my bag on my own. It’s just not worth paying all that to see my ball bouncing around the green on a simple straight putt. A municipal course is better. Sorry but it’s true. Save your money.
All good except……
Always love playing Savannah Harbor. Love the layout and the variety of holes. Unfortunately, the greens were very bumpy with bad patches throughout. This is unusual for this previously pristine course. I can only guess that they had a rough spring weather wise. Overall, a good experience and I am sure the greens will grow in soon.
Worst greens ever
How do you spend millions of dollars on renovating the greens just for them to become worse than they were before the renovation. The rest of the course is in good shape but non of that matters when you have 5 3-5 foot putts you miss because your ball hits a crater and goes 3 inches offline. Take your money to Hilton Head until they get the greens figured out.
Club at Savnnah..
nice course, well layed out, pace was great.never felt pushed.... only negative..greens were rough..
Not as good as last year
I played this course last year at this time and it was in great condition. This year some of the greens had poanna grass in them and several greens were covered in ball pitch marks making putting difficult. I’ve never seen greens like this in all my years playing different courses. It looks like the balls killed the grass where they landed on the greens.
Good course
Slow play hampered some of the enjoyment of this course. A Marshall finally showed up at the 17th hole, a little too late. God course, would recommend.
Golf should not take 5 1/2 hours
Quit after 14 holes and 4 1/2 hours. On the 10th hole there was a group on the green, one in the fairway,, one on the tee and my group was also on the tee with a group right behind us. 5 groups all within the sight of the starter and pro shop.
We never saw a marshall volunteer..
Maybe they should consider 10 minute tee times rather than trying to pack the course with 7/8 minute starting times.
Nice course layout, but inconsistent greens
Really enjoyed playing this Sam Snead design right across from downtown Savannah. Overall the course was in pretty good shape, and the routing was very interesting. Just has some issues where a different blend of grass is coming through in patches on some of the greens, causing for some inconsistent rolls. Overall a nice day of golf!
Law
We have played this course many times, always fun and great condition, the greens weren’t as good as usual, but rolled very well. Staff really nice and helpful.
Not worth the money
Greens were bumpy and still not coming in great from redoing them 2 years ago. Way too expensive for what it is.
