Red Tiger: A great second choice at the Trump National Doral Miami

DORAL, Fla. - With such a championship test in the Blue Monster right next door, the first impression is to dismiss the Red Tiger and its measly 6,395 yards. That would be a mistake, one I admit to making after shooting a worse score on the Red than the Blue from similar yardages.

The Red Tiger bites back with elevated greens and almost as many lakes, ponds and bunkers as the Blue Monster. Gil Hanse redesigned the former Red Course in 2015 following his work on the Blue. Its routing of six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s could be gettable if you're playing well. Only a few holes feel like easy pars, notably the 296-yard fourth and 301-yard 17th holes.

Make sure you warm up at the driving range. The first hole (a 608-yard par 5) and the second hole (a 231-yard par 3) are beasts, setting the tone for a challenging day. All of the par 3s but one stretch to 175 yards and up.

Golf Advisor users sometimes give the Red Tiger higher marks than the Blue Monster because it's more affordable and more fun to play. User Troy4911005 gave it four stars in his review, writing: "After only 2 weeks post hurricane Irma and the course was in great shape. Most of the ponds are still out of the banks, but the course was impeccable."
