The 18-hole Sanctuary Golf Club At Cat Island (previously known as South Carolina National Golf Club) in Beaufort, S.C. is a semi-private golf course that opened in 1985. Designed by George Cobb, Sanctuary measures 6,673 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 136 and a 72.6 USGA rating. The course features four sets of tees for different skill levels.
Sanctuary Golf Club may be the Lowcountry's best conditioned golf course. With velvet tiff-dwarf greens, this George Cobb creation sports beautiful views of Port Royal Sound from many holes.
The course is located on a 400+ acre barrier island just a short 45-minute drive from Hilton Head Island. The layout takes full advantage of the wooded interior with centuries-old live oak trees in abundance.

Thankfully, I paid the Golfnow price, mot retail
played early April. Like other reviews, I agreed that tees and fairways were like a muni-ragged tees and thin fairways.
Greens were rock hard and bunkers could use more sand.
But....again....the price couldn't be beat and I still enjoyed myself.
A day at the Sanctuary Golf Course in Beaufort, SC
What a pleasant experience our day at The Sanctuary Golf Course in Beaufort, SC turned out to be! The course was in pretty good shape but what really impressed my wife, sister-in-law, brother-in-law and myself were the views of the low country experienced at many of the holes. Greens had breath taking back drops of southern charmed homes, sailboats behind some of the greens, marsh lands and saltwater creeks. I will play this course every time from now on when we vacation Beaufort. Special thanks to Mike W. of Golf Now for recommending this course to us.
Early Spring Golf
The course was a good shape, but knowing the growing season was 2 weeks behind the fairways still were developing. But the course layout was fun and challenging. Beautify course to look at.
Course has great wildlife
Not over seeded. Fairways hard to hit off. Greens were good and fast. Needs some TLC.
Greens, fast and very firm
Overall condition of the fairways was poor as was true for the tee boxes. Wildlife and vistas were excellent. In general the course and club house looked like they were"ridden hard and put away wet."
Very fast and firm greens!
Not very crowded to play as a double, and the pace of play was excellent!! Good warm up course, generous landing areas off the tee, the greens were mostly flat and firm, tee boxes and fairways needed grooming but this might be due to the time of year we played.
Worth The Drive
Sanctuary is about an hour from Hilton Head. It is in a beautiful rural setting and often uncrowded. The course was in fair condition for the early Spring: fairways a bit thin but the greens were in good shape.
Always liked course layout
Kind of cool ,a little precip.fairways kind of bare, heard they had rough winter, attendant said they were ready to fertilize
Super course!!
This course is awesome. The could not get a better course right on the ocean; for the money. The greens are nice and firm. The fairways are a little ruff right now due to winter but no more than expected. It will be amazing ce spring.
Very disappointing. No grass in fairways. Bunkers not raked.
I’m not going to sugarcoat this review. Our foursome was terribly disappointed with the conditions at this course. How it ever received a 4-star rating is beyond me. The fairway conditions were terrible. Lies in the fairways were frequently on dirt, the bunkers were unraked and some were as hard as cement, and the tee boxes were 50% dirt. The pace of play was very slow, just under 5 hours. Remarkably, the greens were very nice; they were well cared for and consistent in speed. It was almost like two entirely different courses; a rundown muni at the tee boxes, bunkers, and fairways and resort style quality on the greens. The layout of the course is interesting with several carries overs water and environmentally sensitive areas. This may have been a very nice course at one time but it has fallen into disrepair. Maybe the course will be better once Spring sets in but I’ll never know, I wouldn’t return on bet.
interesting par threes
Three of the par 3s are waterfront and very scenic.
Much more challenging from the white tees than from the golds, which missed mist of the forced carries of the tee.
A Challenge
Our 70 year old threesome had a challenging and enjoyable time from the white tees. Still not willing to go to the forward mens' tees. Greens were true and fast despite previous rain. No one hit a bunker so can't comment except to say they looked playable..
very nice day
Beautiful course, interesting to play with the alligators when we chiip. Green excellent.
Nice Course
Enjoyed course, wife not so much. Kidding honey. Greens rock hard and fast. Early in season but layout was great.
too early in season
fairways too hard, the greens were ok, perhaps in March would be a better time to play. Course design is good, views are wonderful. Singles, twosomes were allowed, play was slow, staff could have paired up players, to speed up play, waited on every hole.
A Wonderful Layout
Sanctuary is a very pretty ocean side course with many challenging holes and lots of water to cross.
The greens are very true and fast, especially on the down hill putts. The fairways have not been over-seeded so there isn't much green.
Overall the course is very interesting with lots of beautifully designed golf holes.
cat island
winter conditions fairways poor greens great and very very fast good sand in bunh=kers
Great value
Staff was great, rest rooms all around the course were very clean, the overall golf course was in great shape.
Course Condition
Challenging yet fair. Greens were in excellent condition as was course considering time of year. Nice layout.
The Sanctuary Golf Club at Cat Island
The Sanctuary is a "must" play every year when we winter in Hilton Head. The course is interesting with many challenging holes requiring some technique to complete successfully. The back-to-back par 3's are a fun play, sometimes not such a fun finish but always enjoyable. The Sanctuary has everything to make for a great day of golfing - beautiful marsh views, fairways through wooded areas, large greens, and an abundance of wildlife from alligators on the banks of the waterways to deer crossing the fairways at their leisure. The Sanctuary is one of the most peaceful settings we have ever experienced and is a course we look forward to returning to each year. Well worth the extra miles. Definitely one of our favourites!
