Charleston National Golf Club
About
Marshland and natural lagoons make Charleston National a real gem to play. Architect Rees Jones and Greg Muirhead strategically placed wooden bridges over the natural areas which sometimes range from tee to green. Once tree laden, it's now a little more open, which may be to your advantage. A trip to Charleston National should be considered by any serious golfer visiting the Charleston area.

Horrible Pace of Play
I have played here more than five times -- always on M-Th. I have never completed more than 14 holes because it has taken so long that I could not stay to finish. I reached 4:45 on one occasion. Management knows of the problem and does nothing about it. The slowdown starts around 12th hole and grinds to a stop thereafter. Stay away from this course unless you are willing to wait a long time between shots.
Nice challenging course
The course is all out in front of you, but that doesn't mean that it is easy. A little local knowledge does help.
Interesting layout
Nice course, enjoyed it. Decently maintained. Great soft bunkers, challenging, but not impossible greens. Played some great courses in the area, this was one that I thought was worth it.
What is the yardage?
Pros- Challenging par 4s and greens can be tricky. Condition was pretty good.
Cons- Feels like a tourist course. Practice Range is a mile from clubhouse and first tee. Have to add an extra hour to the experience if you want to warm up before a round. Impossible to walk. Must use a cart for everything. Only yardage marks on most holes were 100, 150, 200 markers. Sprinkler heads unmarked. Tough when the greens are so tricky to not know exact yardages.
Good course, difficult layout
This is a great course and has a lot of marsh views. Pick your tees wisely because you can get over hour playing ability. Saw several gators so be careful searching for balls in water.
the only down side is the greens are not consistent from hole to hole.
Challanging layout, good conditions
The course is challenging , undulating greens, OB and/or hazard on every hole. Good course conditions, the type of course you need to play more than once as knowing where you can hit or bail out would give you a better opportunity to score.
Play was a bit slow until we played thru a couple of slow groups.
Poorly managed starting times
We arrived early to warm up and were informed the starter was on time and we might even get off early, We ended up starting 20 minutes later than our tee time and had to sit at 1st tee for 40 minutes while no one was started in front of us!!! Starter was told by a woman in the pro shop that we could not start early. They seemed to be waiting on a group with a tee time just ahead of us who never showed up. No one in charge seemed to know what was going on. VERY frustrating to have to sit and watch an empty tee box for so long while there were 2 or 3 groups behind us also waiting as we were all delayed past our reserved tee times!!
Course was OK - but pro shop experience results in low rating
Challenging Course
The course is in good shape but very challenging. This course has several undulations in the greens, a good bit of sand and water. Bring extra balls!
Interesting holes, beautiful views of marsh wetlands
The front-nine plays through the community houses (very nice, though). The back-nine had some fantastic views of the marsh and wetlands - lots of forced carries typical of Rees Jones.
very beautiful course with challenging holes.
really loved the set up, well taking care of, staff excellent attitudes, very friendly, loved seeing wildlife seen deers, cranes, alligator, birds, squirrels and butterflies. beautiful display of Gods creation.
Great greens, rolled true
Course was in excellent shape. Greens were fast and true.
Great value, good challenge, well maintained course
Charleston National is great value for the money. The course obviously receives a lot of play but is very well maintained. Pace of play could have been a bit faster but mainly bacause they had a large outing / scramble going on that day. Lots of challenging holes and several where driver is not a good choice off the tee, Would definitely play this course again next time into the Charleston area.
A little pricey, but, a good course
Had a great time at this course. We were there for a good friends bachelor party. Fairways were in good shape. Greens were in good shape. Enjoyed the round.
This course is in good shape and fun to play.
The course has fairly generous fairways and greens for most holes. The back nine plays in and out of marshland and is more target golf than the front. Both nines are fun to play. Conditions are really good. Greens roll great. Take insect spray to be safe.
A lot of character
This coarse was in really good condition from the tee box to the flag, the views were amazing. I would recommend this coarse to be played if you have the chance.
Would definately recomend.
Charleston National is a very nice course, but not exactly for a high handicap player..Hit it straight on this course or pay the price..Plenty of well place bunkers and various trouble to get into. Quite a few forced carries...Many holes do not require a driver , but rather accuracy to avoid trouble..Not a course to bring the wife, if you know what I mean!...lol.
Over all, a very nice lay out..Had a great time and will be back for sure.
Front nine is better than the back. Back nine has 3 holes on it that if you aren't a member you have no idea where to play the t-shot.
The front nine is pretty much straight forward. Nice lay out and a fair test of golf. The back nine however is has 3 holes that are what I consider unfair, especially to visiting golfers who have no idea what to hit off the Tee. The holes are chopped up with marshes going across the fairways that force you to choose a club less than a driver to hit the sometimes barely visible landing areas. My suggestion to this course is to post signage that tells you how far to carry trouble from the Tee boxes. Also how far trouble comes into play on those 3 holes. Greens putted nice even though they had areated recently. I would imagine the greens would be very nice once the areation holes went away. I would probably play it again.
Nice scenery
Open fairways but you better hit them. Lots of trouble if you get loose (marsh and such). The greens had been punched and top dressed a week earlier so not fair to comment on them. Lots of houses but they are set well back from the course. Fair test but difficult in windy conditions.
Great course
Other than the recently aerated greens, the course was in great shape. Friendly staff and a nice lay out. Will definitely play again the next time I'm in Charleston.
Great value
This course was in great shape considering all the recent rains. Greens rolled very true.
