Charleston National Golf Club
About
Marshland and natural lagoons make Charleston National a real gem to play. Architect Rees Jones and Greg Muirhead strategically placed wooden bridges over the natural areas which sometimes range from tee to green. Once tree laden, it's now a little more open, which may be to your advantage. A trip to Charleston National should be considered by any serious golfer visiting the Charleston area.

Beautiful course, fairly difficult for a decent golfer
The outlay of this course is amazing! Some of the views you see along the marsh are incredible. I would highly recommend this course for the price that I got on it for on golfnow.com. The course is not terribly difficult if you hit the ball the straight every shot. I'm more of a bomber and I had a little difficulty because there is not much room for error. The greens are fast and challenging. The play was a tad slow, but that was only because there was a captain's choice tournament going on while we were there. It was my first time playing Charleston National and it was an overall great experience for me.
Nice course, but slow.
I enjoyed playing this course, even though it was a hellish hot Sunday and the course was jammed. It took slightly over 5 hours to get around. At $60, the price was a slight bit too steep for such a frustratingly slow round. The course was well-designed and nicely maintained. The staff was cordial at the pro shop. The heat was blistering, but there was no sign of a cart-girl on the front 9, and only one visit from her on the back, so that could have been improved. I'll give this course another visit, but be sure to do it on a week day when it's likely to be less crowded.
Wow! what a fun challenging and scenic course.
Just play here, you will love it. Very challenging holes, friendly people and wow what a view.
Very Challenging
This course is well maintained and in excellent shape, it is a pretty course. That being said it is very challenging and frustrating for a high handicapper and grinder such as myself. I can usually grind out a decent score from mishits and get back in play but here it is very unforgiving, if you miss the fairway just a little, you are done you will not have a good lie, be in thick deep grass, I was very frustrated, this is my second time playing and I've decide this course is above my level of play. The people and staff are awesome, the course is nice, but I will not be playing again.
Beautiful Low Country coastal course.
The layout of course with the outstanding scenery as you meander through out the marshlands and woods make this course a must play if you visit the Low Country.
Great Course
Fairways and greens were in very nice condition, the layout was outstanding, especially the several holes that playerd through the marsh adjacent to the intercostal waterway. Not up to the standard of a Kiawah Island course but well worth the honey. Good pace of play, in a housing community but built back far enough they never come in to range.
Great course and great staff!
I played with my dad and brother during our vacation in Isle of Palms. We started out by arriving early to warm up at the driving range, but learned that it was closed (after we made the trip down the range from the pro shop) due to the substantial amount of rain that it got the day before. The staff member in the pro shop apologized and worked us in early for our tee time so we weren't just standing around.
Despite all the rain the day before the course was wet, but not soaked. It played a little long, but was still in very good shape and lots of fun.
At the turn we stopped in for a quick bite and the staff member from the pro shop comped our hot dogs to help make up for the driving range closure. Not a huge deal, but it says more about the way they value their guests and members. First class in my book, especially when "customer service" is becoming less and less these days.
Overall, we had a great experience here and I look forward to playing it again when I return. Definite recommend.
Difficult course if not familiar.
Had 3PM tee time for foursome, golf shop also scheduled twosome(members) at same time while there was a shotgun tournament going on. Felt pressured to play fast and no starter at first tee. For a generally $65-70 green fees I would expect more. The rough was approximately 2-3 inches right off fairway which made course tough when fairway was missed.
NIce features.
The back nine was a lot tougher than the front nine. Had several holes with marsh carry to include one with a narrow landing area between two marshes. The course was NOT well marked as to distance on the sprinkler heads. We had a tough time finding sprinkler heads with markets. They need to add reflectors on the top of the pins. Flags were also hard to discern as to whether they were front, middle or back. I recommend that they just go to solid colored flags which are easier to spot instead of the checked ones they have. Course was in good condition.
Course in great shape this year with all the rain
Charleston national is a good value this time of year. We played right after a rain and it drained well! No problems after about 2" of rain. Pace of play wasn't an issue because we were the only ones out there. In great shape and greens roll true. If you haven't played here give it a try, but bring an extra sleeve of balls!
good course for the money
Good course to play but local knowledge would be helpful. This is not a course to walk but we enjoyed playing it.
This is a great golf course with great scenery. You have to be accurate because there are a lot of holes that work around the marsh land.
This is a great golf course with great scenery. There are lots of water hazards on this course also the course encompasses the marshes. If you hit a ball in the marsh, you should not look for it. There are alligators, snakes, bugs and sharp reeds that will prevent you from retrieving the ball. The course was in great shape and a lot of fun. There were a lot of holes where you had to be very accurate because of the marsh land. All the par 3's were beautiful. You did not get the ocean breeze so the wind did not come into play to much. There were several tees to choose from. The back tees were tough.
Good playable vacation golf course.
Nice course. Very good for vacation golfer--not too difficult, but challenging enough to be fun to play.
Really nice course. Challenging but fair.
We almost didn't book a tee time on this course because of some of the previous reviews. I'm glad we didn't pay attention to the negative ones. This is a beautiful course that takes you through very scenic areas. It was in very good condition considering the unbelievable rain that Charleston has had over the last several weeks. It's definitely a challenging course, but fair. You do need to place some shots to keep out of trouble. Great course, great day of golf!
Nice course and some fun holes.
This course was well kept and we were able to get an early tee time for a good value. The only negative that I would mention is that going from number 3 to number 4 is not very well marked and it was a little confusing.
Nice track
Our tee time was at 5:04, got on at 445. Played the front 9 in 1:30. The back 9 was very slow. Not the fault of the course, however, if there was a ranger to help speed up the place, that might have helped.
Fairways were in great shape, as were the greens. Beautiful course for the money we paid.
Ran into alligators, deer, turtles, and all sorts of little "critters". It was an enjoyable experience.
I would recommend this course to anyone and look forward to playing it next time I am in Charleston.
I enjoyed the course. The layout is nice.....some long holes and some short holes. You hit every club in your bag. Also the course has a lot of water. In my opinion water gives a course a little extra character/uniqueness to it.
Good Value, lots of potential
I enjoyed the course. You can tell that effort is being made to bring this back to top-class condition, but still some work to do. I would do it again for $50 or under.
The course has great views of the intercoastal waterways and a good breeze
Tee shots over the saltwater marsh were challenging.
Fairways are not especially wide so be in control of your game.
The only issue were the adoration holes on the greens .
They were still in good shape though.
Must hit all clubs in bag - good. Greens were just aerated - bad.
Course layout is very challenging, must hit every club in your bag. Appropriate risk/reward opportunities for hitting driver mixed with some target golf holes requiring mid-irons off the tee. Would have like to see the #2 tee boxes used to give us opportunity to play course from 6700 or so. I can't play tips anymore, but also not fond of 6300 yard layouts. Disappointed that the greens had just been aerated, therefore I can't rate true green condition. Not worth the money b/c greens were aerated. Will play this course again if in the area and greens are not aerated.
