Oakbrook Golf Club
About
Located less than an hour from Seattle in Lakewood, Oakbrook Golf Club is one of the area's hidden gems. Opened in 1966 as a private club, the course opened its doors to the public in 2012. The course is known for its smooth, firm, and fast greens. The 6,700-yard layout plays both narrow and long but it is player friendly enough to appeal to a wide range of skill levels. With hundreds of mature oak trees scattered throughout the course, accuracy is key. It's a course that rewards strategy rather than raw skill. One of Oakbrook Golf Club's toughest holes is the par-4 seventh, which you'll have to play from below since it's sloped steeply from top to bottom. The downhill shots and doglegs will put golfers of any skill level to the test.

They are now allowing fivesomes
This really slowed down the pace of play. We had two fivesome's in front of us and waited on every hole.
This used to be a well maintained golf course but the greens are in really rough shape and sand traps are a joke. RMG is not taking care of their investment.
Best of the RMG courses
Oakbrook is the jewel of the RMG courses. Wide fairways, groomed greens and challenging obstacles. I highly recommend this course to anyone in the Tacoma area.
Play it for the fast greens.
Finally walked a round after hearing about fast greens. First, finding the place was a pain. Nobody playing on a Monday, just me with another single. Basically, it's your typical boring layout with trees on bother sides, but not dense like Meadowpark (which is more interesting). Many bunkers, but not enough sand! You cannot bounce out of them without hitting the hard bottom, a shame. The only memorable experience are the fast greens. They are fun to putt after practicing on the exceptional practice greens. I prefer links courses, so didn't find Oakbrook interesting at all. No water, grasses, waste areas, soft sand, etc. Could not remember even the 2 holes I birdied! Too old style I guess. Very walkable and you should! Worth a play, but there are many better courses.
Bad, Bad Bunkers
Friendly staff, but holy smokes the bunkers are awful. And there are plenty of them all Filled with rocks and pebbles. Spend some money and fix the traps. No one who spends good money on equipment wants to hit from those. Too much risk to damage your clubs. If it wasn't for that detail I'd rate much higher but because of it I can't. Don't really want to play it again unless they fix that issue.
Very Good Course
Although I didn't play well, can't blame it on the course. Fairways and greens were excellent and running fast. Course was fair and somewhat challenging, especially with the pin locations. Sand was well kept and very playable. I enjoyed the round in under 4 hrs which is good. I would recommend this course from a beginner to a scratch golfer.
Beautiful course
This course is in excellent shape. The fairways are in top shape and the greens are very receptive in great shape and lightning fast!
My only complaint is that there are absolutely no markers on any of the tee boxes telling you what hole you are on , or any signage anywhere directing you to the next hole. We actually missed an entire hole . Other than that a great experience and will definitely be back!
Almost perfect
The only thing I can say negative was that the bunkers were/had compacted sand only top <1/2" was loose. They needed to be tilled/stirred.
Great course, slow play
Got stuck behind a slow 5-some. Course allows 5-somes and has a tin ear to complaints about it.
Hidden Gem
Oakbrook is a nice addition to the public golf menu in the South Sound... a very playable (and walkable) course with enough tee options to satisfy golfers of all levels. The course is in very good shape. Narrow fairways and big trees require accuracy off the tee; the greens are firm and fast.
You'll need GPS to find this course (or find anything in Lakewood!), but it's well worth the drive.
Good course for the money but not great...
Good course for the money but not great...there are at least three small things that would make this course much better such as adding hole signs with yardage, adding more hole yardage stakes/stones and finally have sandwiches and hotdogs available quickly at the turn.
Long course and challenging
Great golf course: well kept, dry, and friendly staff.
Great course, first time playing there, direction to get there is a bit confusion, but course is well maintained, it's all worthwhile!
Great course! first time playing there. although direction to get there was a bit confusion, but course is well maintained, it's all worthwhile!
Excellent greens, fast and true.
The course played a bit longer today since we have had a lot of rain in the past 3 days, but the greens were in excellent shape. I produced one of my best scores this year with 9 one putts on the day.
great value
Oakbrook is never a disappointment. The greens are always in fabulous shape. Even with all the rain we have had the course is always fairly dry. A must play.
Former private gem now available to us all!
This is a beautilful course - very well maintained. While some of the fairways are quite narrow, it is still playable for mid to high handicappers. A very walkable course. There are some challenging holes with 400+ yard par fours, evilly placed bunkers, and several trees that just seem to want to get in the way of your path to the green. And speaking of the greens, they're fast and several have some undulations that create a opportunities for a few nasty pin placements (which the greens keepers seem to like to take advantage of).
I enjoyed my round and linked up with some very pleasant company both times I played. Definitely put this on your list of must play courses.
Nice well maintained track
Ex private club which has recently converted to daily fee. Still has a feel of a Country Club, super condition, fairways very good condition, tee boxes excellent and Greens superb, bunkers were all raked with decent amount of sand. My only thing here and this is really picky but the tee boxes are not numbered (I know this is a throwback to the country club days) the layout is fairly easy to follow and the map on the scorecard helps. Hitting thru the power lines crossing the fairways was interesting. overall a great place and the halfway shack was reasonable priced too.
Nothing special
Course is ok. Flat. Greens were littered with pitch marks. Apparently the people that usually play out there do not know how to fix them. Would have appreciated knowing there were about 4 temp greens from the course staff or golf now but that didn't happen either.
If Oakbrook is really the jewel of RMG, that will save me visiting the other two.
