Oakbrook Golf Club
About
Located less than an hour from Seattle in Lakewood, Oakbrook Golf Club is one of the area's hidden gems. Opened in 1966 as a private club, the course opened its doors to the public in 2012. The course is known for its smooth, firm, and fast greens. The 6,700-yard layout plays both narrow and long but it is player friendly enough to appeal to a wide range of skill levels. With hundreds of mature oak trees scattered throughout the course, accuracy is key. It's a course that rewards strategy rather than raw skill. One of Oakbrook Golf Club's toughest holes is the par-4 seventh, which you'll have to play from below since it's sloped steeply from top to bottom. The downhill shots and doglegs will put golfers of any skill level to the test.

Fast greens
Nice greens nice fairways
perfect greens
The first time I ever got to play Oakbrook was in a WJGA tournament when I was 12 years old and I couldn't believe how fast and smooth their greens were. More than 15 years later, they are as good as ever.
Last year was a rebuilding year for Oakbrook when the owners decided to take out over 400 for trees. Many thought the course would never recover, but now over a year later, it is incredible to see how quickly the turf has bounced back and how healthy the course is. Previously, for months during the winter, multiple tee boxes, greens, and fairways would not see a single ray of sunlight November - Febuary. But now, thanks to the grasses increased exposure to sun and air flow, the tees and fairways are as healthy as ever and the greens are the best public course greens I've played in western Washington - and better than most private courses too.
The staff is friendlier than ever too. There is a new Director of Golf in the Golf Shop who is coming up with fun events for the members and a new Chef in the restaurant who is cooking fast and tasty food to go along with the already friendly staff of servers.
It's fun to hear all the members who have stuck around say that Oakbrook has turned the corner and is starting to truly return to its "glory days".
The course conditions were great! Especially the greens.
I just had a blast playing Oakbrook.
We played 18 holes in under 4 hours on a Saturday morning - the greens were smooth and quick! The clean up from the course renovation is nearly complete and the benefits from more air flow and sunlight are obvious! I can't wait to play again and I'm thinking about becoming a member!
Excellent course and staff
Oakbrook is an absolute diamond in the rough. My day there started off arriving to phenomenal hospitality in the pro shop. The staff ensured I was comfortable and acclimated to their grounds. Teeing off on time without delay, the course was immaculate. There's no questioning they take pride in everyday maintenance. After my round, I enjoyed a wonder lunch in the Oakhouse. Again, fantastic service with their staff. I would highly recommend any level of golfer to spend the day at Oakbrook. Hard to find people working on all levels passionate about what they do. It's beyond clear Oakbrook sets the bar very high for the state of Washington's courses.
Worthy Course , Good Value, Challenging Greens
Warm, sunny Saturday afternoon 315p tee off. Paired with one other single. No other groups on the course.
2 foursomes followed at 330pm. Leisurely walking pace of a little over 4 hours. Fine walking course.
Overall - excellent course, great greens. The layout has perhaps too many doglegs for my liking but its not a detriment.
Range, putting green and chipping area were above average.
Worth the value of Golf Now rates.
Play this course!
Almost perfect
The round started well until near by canon fire rang through out the first 9 holes due to local military ranges, followed by loud music from a near by house or pool party. Course was in great condition, disappointed that the bunkers felt like I was hitting of pavement .
Great Greens
The greens were fast, the course was in great condition. It feels more open since the trees were cut down. All 4 guys who played had a great time. The pace of play was slow, because of the group ahead of us and the group ahead of them. Otherwise it's a great place to play!
Enjoyable course
My buddy and I took advantage of the HotDeals offer from this a bit remote private course. The weather was overcast so usual members probably stayed home but we played a round in 4 hours on Sunday afternoon. Neaby public course (NorthShore, for instance) would have taken probably 5.5 hours so even though it took a bit to drive there, we really enjoyed our round. Course condition was excellent and pace of play was great. We wondered, though, why the handling charge was unusually high (they charged additional $12 plus for two-some). Maybe it is a higher tax imposed by the city of Lakewood. Who knows?
Great Course!
Challenging course, trees can come into play especially on the dog legs. Greens have quite a few slopes and are notoriously fast. But a fun course to play. Worth the trip to the 'burbs!
Saturday Threesome
Played at noon on a cool March Saturday. Considering we were a threesome and were walking, I was pleased with the pace (a 4 hour round). The course is coming back after RMG removed many tall firs that were keeping the sun out and causing some issues on the greens. Most of the stumps have been turned to piles of wood chips. The greens were punched and sanded about a week prior, so were still a little slow from the sand. The sand traps need more sand in them, as the several times I was in them, my wedge bottomed out after 1/2 inch. Given some time to recover, this should be a fun course to play because it's not hilly and a good walk for senior players such as myself.
Great course for walking
Oakbrook is a wonderful layout with subtle challenges off the tee. Great course to walk with firm fairways. This course drains exceptionally well. Well maintained and greens are fast, but fair. We played from white tees and it was above average in challenge - slope 126. I think it was designed by Ron Fream, and he knows how to design wonderful golf courses. This course is very enjoyable to play.
Great course despite the weather
I went out on a blustery (and at times rainy) saturday. Understandably I pretty much had the course to myself, but that didn't stop it from being majestic and thoroughly enjoyable. Gorgeous layout and just challenging enough to be interesting without being frustrating.
Firm winter conditions
Despite being one of the wettest winters on record i only had one plugged ball. Best winter conditions of any public course in western washington.
Things are slipping
Great course, most of the firs removed, a couple strategic ones left. Seems like things are just being let go though. Trash here and there, buildings not being kept up. Wouldn't take a whole bunch to just spruce the place up a bit, and make it all pleasant to look at.
Rocket greens
I used to be a member here in the 80s.
Haven't been back in years.
Many many fir trees have been removed. Much nicer accent now of the numerous beautiful white oak trees.
The greens were especially fast and high quality. They were the fastest greens I have played this summer and that's about 25 rounds at various courses in 3 states.
Now I will be back. It was fun.
Great afternoon
All aspects were good to excellent. Appears mgt is trying to upgrade in multiple ways. Greens are terrific if you like smooth and fast. Real value
disappointment
Disappointed. I have played this course quite often in the past and it was always in awesome shape. the quality of this course has gone downhill since RMG took over the course. Bunkers are horrible many have golf ball sized rocks in them.
What were they thinking?
This is the second RGM course I've played this year. They have mowed down most of the trees which has left the course looking terrible. Ryan needs to win a few tournaments so he can put some money into his courses. The course is good for practice but not much else.
TIMBER...
Hadn't played here in quite some time and was shocked to see the logging operaton that had taken place. Visuals have been destroyed, still a ton of debris on the ground. Won't be back anytime soon....
Challanging but fair with fast tough green and pin placement!
This was the first time playing the course and we played from the blue tees. The course plays narrow and long so expect it to be some real work and focus. I would recommend playing the course from the men's white tees your first time. I used a hybrid driving club to tee off with most of the day because of how narrow it plays. This left me with long approach shots (200+ yards on several holes) and a lot of boagies.
The fairways were very nice and it is evident that the management has removed a lot of trees to make the layout more accessible for average golfers. The greens were fast and had a lot of break, try to stay below the hole on all approach shots and save yourself a few three putts.
I think this is a hidden gem. If you tune your game with this course you will be a better golfer. GO PLAY IT!
