English Turn Golf & Country Club

About
English Turn Golf & Country Club is a Jack Nicklaus design that was crafted in 1988 to host the New Orleans PGA Tour event. Nicklaus designed the course to be enjoyed equally by spectators and golfers, incorporating gallery berms and spectator mounds throughout. This challenging design is known for its undulating greens that will test even the most seasoned players. Each hole has a unique design that combines strategically placed bunkers, including large waste bunkers, and sloping grass swales. There is also carefully sculpted mounding along the edges of the fairways. On top of that, water comes into play on nearly every hole. English Turn's signature hole, the 15th, is a tricky par 5 with an island green but it's the final hole, a par 4 with water all along the left side, that is rumored to be the golf course's toughest.

Still good not great
So, I was visiting New Orleans from Ohio. I golf in a league, and once or twice a week outside of that. My wife suggested I bring golf clubs, never thought of golfing in New Orleans. Wink wink. I looked at the golf scene in New Orleans, and saw that the Arnold Palmer design course, English turn, was once the host of the Zürich open. They haven’t hosted since 2006. And it’s no longer a private club. However, the course was in pretty good shape, the fairways better than average shape. The greens were small, flat, and not very green all. That being said, though, I do wanna highlight that the staff was outstanding. We had a rain delay and they handled everything very professionally, and I got back out there and finished the round after the storm went through. So I wanna give a shout out to the staff there cause they’re outstanding. Their listed rate is around 125. However, if you use any of the apps, you can probably get it for 70. I would say that it was worth $70. So all in all I can recommend it. If you’re looking for TPC quality, then go to the TPC in New Orleans.
Great course
Pro shop and James were very helpful and the restaurant was great as well! Shrimp tacos suggested by waitress were excellent!!
Very enjoyable course to play!
Great experience overall
Visiting from out of town (Portland, OR) and was looking for a challenging and fun course. English Turn delivered. I enjoyed the layout with water in play on every hole. Staff was super friendly and helpful. The starter James gave me a nice introduction to the course. I played as a single Saturday afternoon and finished in 3.5 hours. Loved the pace of play.
The only issue I had was the greens had some brown spots that definitely affected the putt. A few of the spots were significant enough that I actually needed to move my line (called it ground under repair).
But overall I had a great experience and would play it again.
General Comments
I enjoyed the round. Beautiful course and Staff was friendly
Excellent course, terrific staff
James the course Marshall may be the friendliest man since Mr. Rodgers. The course is in excellent shape, we played with a group of high and low handicaps, and everyone found the round both fun and challenging. We will be back.
Nice layout.
Course is a good challenge high or low handicappers. Greens look like they have a fungus too bad that is the only issue I have. Staff is great I come through a couple of times a year and the cart guys are always there with a cart when I park.
3 hour round
Greens had some sand spots on them. Fairways lush. Pace of play quick. Beautiful day.
Awesome course! Only thing that would make it better is if I was good at golf
The course was incredible. A few patchy spots on the greens but that's expected during maintenance.
Architecture was awesome... Tons of water and strategically places bunkers. Greens rolled true. Fairways were in excellent shape.
However, the primary reason for the 5-star review was James, the starter. I've met plenty of starters who don't really care... They just want to get you out of the way for the next group. James gave me a world class run down of the course and even took my picture for lasting memories. My interaction with him was a great way to start off the round.
I will be back next time I'm in NOLA.
English turn
Greens in terrible shape. Cart died on the 14th hole. Club house wouldn’t answer the phone. Greens and bunkers were not 130 dollars worth.
First time
Played English Turn for my first time after moving back to New Orleans from the north shore. I paid in the pro shop and told them it was my first time playing at this course. I was greeted by Mr. James who gave me the utmost best experience I have ever had for the first time at a new course. He showed me to the range, showed me where the first tee was, gave me the history of the course, the layout of the course and pin placement. He also voluntarily took a picture of my girlfriend and I next to my golf bag. My first job at 16 was a cart boy at Money Hill. I told Mr. James that I would have given anything to have a guy like him at that course. This guy is great and you are so lucky to have someone that devoted to the course and their job. This will be the course that I play the most now.
Not worth the $
Let me start by saying this used to be my favorite local course. It’s in really rough shape. Greens were sanded, tee boxes were littered with used tees and hard as a rock. Not worth $70.
One of my Favorite in NOLA
I've played this course before and it is one of my favorites, definitely the top in NOLA for me.
Staff was fabulous and although the starter told us about aeration and sanded greens, nothing on the booking or checking stated the greens work was being done. That was the only negative as some of the greens were so sandy- not sure the grounds crew knew what they were doing, but everything else was fantastic. Booking a Hot Deal basically cut the cost by half. I definitely plan to play again next year.
Diamond in the Rough
English Turn is a delight! Its classic Jack Nicholson design blends with today’s demands for the benchmark Country Club experience at a cost-effective price-point. All 7 rating categories are truly top notch. Yes, every category!
Make the 25 minute drive out from downtown and you will enjoy everything about your New Orleans golf day experience!
Still has some of its glory, BUT....
Played English Turn to see how the old Zurich classic course was. The course is fair to play. Wide fairways, small undulating greens. Just as you would expect from a Nicklaus course. The issue is the condition of the greens and tee boxes. A lot of the greens had a number of dead spots on the green as well as the tee boxes. No cart girl to bring you a beverage. Otherwise the staff was friendly and seemed glad to see me.
Great condition
The course was in excellent condition despite they often on rain that we have had recently.
