Dolphin Head Golf Course

About
The Dolphin Head Golf Club, originally designed by Gary Player and Ron Kirby and built in 1974, was the first golf course developed at Hilton Head Plantation.
A trademark of Dolphin Head is the slight elevation of the greens from the approach-shot area and the numerous mounds, which accentuate the greens.
Under the direction of renowned golf course architect Clyde Johnston, Dolphin Head Golf Club's greens were rebuilt in 1993. Most recently, all bunkers were completely rebuilt, and four new fairway bunkers were added in strategic locations. A major tree-thinning program has been under way in the last few years to allow more sunshine to reach tees and greens.
The front nine starts and finishes with par 5s, and No. 18 is also a par 5.

Rude staff and horrible condition
Staff was horribly rude from beginning to end. Course was in horrible condition. Bar was closed unless you were a member and went behind the bar to get it yourself. Would not recommend.
Used to be private, nice to play now.
Dolphin Head used to be a private course until a couple years ago and now that its open to the public give it a try. Course in nice shape with little areas of burn out but has to be expected with hardly any rain. Tees fine, fairways very hittable and greens in good shape. Staff very nice and layout is a little challenging but most should be able to handle.
Playable for All Skill Levels
Dolphin Head is a good golf course with a number of interesting holes that require you to play varying shaped shots. It is not overly long or challenging so long as you keep the ball in play. Wayward shots can easily find the water hazards that exist on many of the holes or trees that tend to be fairly close to the fairways. Course conditions were better than expected after having read a number of the recent reviews. A couple of tees were somewhat bare with one of the par 3s (#17) completely bare - hitting off of green sand. The fairways and greens were in very good shape and it appeared that most golfers were doing a good job of filling in their divots with the sand provided and repairing their ball marks on the greens. The greens were smooth and fairly quick with true rolling of putts. The course was not crowded and the pro shop staff gave me the freedom to skip around and play multiple holes if/when I caught up with any golfers in front of me. Dolphin Head was a good choice for me to play my first round on Hilton Head Island as I was able to play a leisurely round at my own pace and practice by occasionally hitting multiple balls/putts, etc. without feeling rushed. Dolphin Head was a very good value for the money - especially using the Daily Steal deal on the course's website.
My back hurts
This is an outstanding golf course for the average player - good value for your money. But I've never played a course that has cart paths in such bad condition. My back hurts from the number of jarrings it took. The course itself was well maintained (except the sand traps couldn't have been touched in a week). Strange - a very pleasant place to play, but the public areas weren't kept up - dirty rest rooms, etc, Clearly this course could use better management. If those conditions were fixed, I would give it a good rating.
So so course.
Fairways were ok. Not over seeded. Some tees were literally a sand box. Greens were very rough. Putts hopped and bounced all over the place. Nice layout but we probably wouldn’t play it again.
Friendly course
Nice layout for all labels of golfers. The course is in better shape then some of the others on the island. It is well worth the money if you get special deals, otherwise, it is a little pricey compared to other courses in the area.
Back 9 best
Overall curse was nice. Starter let us out early even though they were busy. Nice long fairways! Back 9 was very pretty and cleared out so we cruised right through!
A enjoyable but challenging course
Getting to the greens is only half the challenge.... fast and tricky greens made 2 putting difficult.
Couple of the buggie paths need a bit of attention but generally course in good condition
Thanks
Very wet after days of big rains but sunny all day
.Lots of standing water and very wet in places on the fairways but a very enjoyable yet slow day. 4 1/2+ hrs. Would love to come back and play it when the course dries out..
Tremendous
Outstanding course. Great stall, professional service and attitude. Everyone from the bag boy to the pro shop attendant to the starter were friendly efficient and professional. Great experience, have already recommended it too several people.
Golfnow bargain
Well maintained course with some interesting holes. Lots of water mixed with wind when we played made for a challenging day.
Greens were in the worst condition of any course we had played on the island for the same price
Fairways needed to be over seeded as the grass needs to be thicker in the fairway
With a considerable amount of TLC course could be a nice track

The course was in great shape for all the rain. The greens were good, fast and fair. Go play it nice course and nice people.
First time
I played there for the first time today and had a great round. Barring dropping my phone and I did find it. It is a great lay out and a challenge for any golfer. The traps could use some sand or they need to be fluffed. I only 5hing is at the end of my round the place was closed up tight and there was one guy getting the last carts. This is not the way our courses work up north.
Beautiful day
Played as a twosome, starter asked the group in front of us to pair up. They preferred to play alone. Finished in just over 415 hours. Pace was steady but as. A twosome we waited on several holes. Greens were good shape. Enjoyed the round
