The Dye Mind Game
Pete Dye's mastery for mind games is on full display here. The opening three holes ease you into your round but present previews of the challenging angles to come. The only hole in this layout I real felt was unfair is the Par 3 17th hole as the overgrown marsh in front blocks a fair view of the small green complex and the trouble located next to the green is a but much for a longer par 3 with a small green. Aside from that the layout challenges you to take on trouble and blindshots like any Dye course does.
From a course conditions side the course was in good shape considering it is the summer off season here and the winterkill issues at this point in the recovery process were minimal. Greens were very receptive and not in perfect shape but definitely good to play on.
Value and Pace of play: We were a foursome of 2 adults and 2 juniors. Barefoot has afternoon discounts that are totally worth it if you can stand the heat. We paid 58$ after 12pm and our two juniors were free since there were two paying adults in the afternoon. There was not a ton of play on teh course so we played in about 4 hours which is great for a tough layout with juniors.
Staff: Was super accomadating and friendly from the start. We didn't use the the resturant and bar except to buy drinks at the turn but we were treated well by the staff there as well
Dye at Barefoot
We played both the Love and Dye courses at Barefoot, and I liked the Dye course better. This course has a very strong Pete Dye feel, with sharp lines, intense mounding, railroad ties, etc. There is sand framing nearly every hole that plays as waste areas, with traditional bunkers lining the greeens. The course is very challenging for all the aforementioned reasons, but a fun layout.
If you are playing soon, be aware that the resort suffered some tough weather in the recent months and have a lot of issues with the greens. They were repairing them while I was there. There were about 5-6 greens on each course that were getting partially scraped and sodded.
typical Dye layout
Many of the courses in Myrtle Beach suffered massive damage to their greens over the winter. The staff was very upfront about the less than perfect greens and offered that we could play another course after 4 holes if we desired. We decided to play anyway. The greens were slow and definitely less than perfect, but we enjoyed the course as a whole.
Best at Barefoot
Very good golf course. The course was very well maintained even after the rough winter in the area. The different grasses in the rough add to the character of the course. This is easily the second best course I've played in Myrtle Beach, behind Dunes Club. The only possible negative might be for someone who has played a number of Pete Dye courses before...you've probably seen much of this before elsewhere.
The best of the Barefoot courses
We ended our Barefoot trip with the Dye Club and we couldn't be happier we did. All of the Barefoot courses are great, but the Dye is the best of the bunch.
1. Layout: The course design is fantastic. Each hole is different and interesting. There is not a single hole where you walk off the green thinking it was a bad hole. You're much more likely to look backward and think about what a great hole you just played.
2. Difficulty: The Dye is tough; it just is. If you're off your game, you will find trouble. Overall, though, it is not unfair or punishing in any way. You can see all the trouble that is there and if you avoid it, you will be fine.
3. Conditioning: The course is in great shape. It is the fifth course we have played this trip and it is in the best shape by far. We din't see a dead spot in the fairways all day and the greens are perfect.
Pace of play
Pace of play was issue. Also bunkers were not maintained & were a mess
I was very annoyed with this golf course because I was playing when it was 95° and high humidity and the course does not offer any water. The course was in fairly good shape however I was expecting a little bit better conditions for the price of the course.
Good layout with a lot of teeth
Third time playing but it had been 6 years since I'd played it. Forgot how nice the clubhouse is. Truly first class. Place was empty as they aerated 4 days before (and it was 4pm). Really interesting and challenging layout. Some room off the tee but have to get pretty precise on approaches. Wouldn't recommend for higher handicaps. Would be a beast in the wind. Greens were beat up from aeration but I was pre-warned about it at booking and when I checked in and at the restaurant. Staff was all very strong and it was a good experience. Will definitely be back and would recommend to better players or those looking for a strong challenge.
A mental game
Pete Dye just likes to mess with you and this is no exception. From the tees, it looks like there is no fairway out there. There is. Plot your way around the course. The sand was in great condition -- and there is a lot of it. Was surprised by a 5-hour round. Barefoot usually is good on pace of play.
Great Playable Dye course
Our foursome played all 4 Barefoot courses and we were split between the Love and Dye courses for #1. While this is not the unique course that PGA West or TPC Sawgrass is, the Dye design traits are all in evidence but in a more relaxed way. This makes for a still-challenging but more enjoyable round.
Grille in Dye clubhouse much better than the grille in the other Barefoot clubhouse.
