The Golf Club at Vistoso in Tucson has never seemed willing to cower in the presence of its resort-course cousins. Paloma and Ventana are golf resorts, but the Golf Club at Vistoso is just a golf course, and a fine one at that. This Tom Weiskopf-designed layout was a "readers write-in" Golf Magazine's "Top 100 you can play," and is a "sneaky" favorite among locals and visitors alike. The layout is nowhere near as penal as Ventana or La Paloma, and if you can find better greens in the greater Tucson area, let us know. Take note of the 166-yard, par-3 third hole -- on a clear day (there are only 323 of them) you will have an amazing view of the north side of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Course Maintenance Falling Off
This layout is a premier track by Weiskopf. Requires good shot making skills. Maintenance has gone from Average+ to less than average. Areas of fairways are burned out and greens becoming browned out.
Bunkers are very poor. No sand in deep bunkers are almost unplayable.
It is a great deal at summer prices, but don't expect outstanding conditions.
Staff is top notch.
Rough and fairways need work
Fairways bad and even dirt bald in spots. Greens bumpy from ball marks, but afternoon rate still dirt cheap, no pun intended. You will not be disappointed.
Great value
First 9 holes were a lot of fun; open fairways in pretty good condition with minimal, if any, wait time.
Major thunder and lightening storm ended our round for the back nine, although the back nine appeared much more challenging than the front nine (less green, more scrub and desert hazards). Staff was great and readily agreed to a rain check for the nine holes we didn't get to play.
Needs Better Management
We have played this course before but it was certainly a disappointment this time. It started with no one to greet us at the bag drop. Then the starter (totally incompetent) told us we could go whenever we were ready. After hitting a few practice balls we saw the starter again and he said "go ahead". What he didn't tell us was that he told 3 other groups the same thing at the same time. We were immediately stuck behind a slow twosome and being pushed by the threesome behind us. Pace was horrible and course was in dismal shape. Only play this course if you like a beat-up muni.
Grate layout
This course use to be one of the best courses in Tucson. When new people took ownership course raiting dropped down to average level.
Greens are sketchy.
The overall condition of the course was fine, but the greens were rough, a little hairy and had some dead patches at times. They weren't horrible, but the certainly weren't anything we got excited about putting on. We found them to be slow, and often, had our putts thrown off line by bad hops. They did not, for the most part, roll smooth.
tee box selection
tell the players to play from the tee box that matches there handy-cap so the round will be more injoyable.
Course is in poor condition
I don't know why but the course has deteriorated dramatically of late. The fairways are scalped with large areas of dirt where there should be grass. despite the heavy Monsoon rains the course is drying out and what little grass there is, is very thin. The greens are extremely bumpy and poorly maintained. The free lunch deal was the only bright spot as the post round lunch on the patio was very good. I won't be back until they upgrade their course maintenance and that is going to take a long time (if ever).
A Nice Desert course
A Good and challenging course for a good price value. There are a lot of shots requiring you know the distance to hazards and Desert areas otherwise you can expect several extra strokes. If your know the safe distance to hit, so much the better.
Forced Carry
Every hole on this course has a forced carry of at least 50 yards even from the front tees. If this makes you want to "kill the ball" get ready to fight a rattlesnake for your lost ball. We found the fairways very dry so the drive gets lots of roll. the greens were in great shape and lacked complex countours making them easy to read. The restauant offers only (covered) outside seeting - better in the winter than in Tucson's 100+ degrees summer. Lunch was just OK. The staff, however is very friendly and helpful. We had a fun round.
Please....we need water!
The fairways that is...and the tee boxes...and...you get the point. I hate to see one of my favorite layouts in Tucson be so beat up and dried out. This course will be dead(er) if there is no more monsoon rain. Hopefully they will start watering the course at some point and get it back to playable.
Great time!!
Great day at Vistoso. Fun course - Challenging but lets even a duffer have a few great holes. I will be back for sure!!
Good time
The course is always a challenge due to the tight fairways and desert areas. The greens had been aerated which we weren't aware of before hand however we always have a great time golfing no matter what the conditions.
Not up to expectations!
A couple of years ago this course was highly rated. Two locals I played with stated that the course had fallen on tough time. Based on my experience I must agree! So sad, since the layout is wonderful and the scenery incredible.
Great Layout, Great Price
This course is a lot of fun to play. The fairways and greens are in good shape and it has some wonderful views.
Management spending absolutely no money on this facility.
The pace of play was outstanding, solely due to no one else willing to play a course in such poor condition. The course was completely dried out. Bunkers were compacted in many spots, and looked as if they had not been churned or raked in weeks. Tee boxes were so dried out it was difficult to push a tee in the ground. Fairways were so dried out they looked like the driving range in Tin Cup. Greens were semi-dry, and slow, probably to preserve what little natural moisture they had in them. However, they did putt somewhat true. No starter was present. The range balls were a mishmash of super old, dilapidated, range balls and stray balls collected from the course, with hand-painted black striping. The ice machine was leaking and falling apart, and the cup holder was empty. A partial tube of hot coffee cups was the only source of water cups available. Our golf cart steered like a Mack truck. The bag boy had disappeared by the time we finished our round, so we had to schlepp our cart bags back to the parking lot. The only saving grace was the free lunch thrown in with the round of golf. This course is in an upscale area of Oro Valley. What a shame to see it go to seed.
Very disappointing..................
Moved to Oro Valley 16 years ago and Vistoso was the number one rated course in AZ. We played it a couple times a week and some times more when friends visited., A few years ago it went down hill and we stopped playing here. Was told by a pro at another club that it was back in shape. No way..........very disappointed in conditions of course.
Play was slow, 5 1/2 hours, and course needs a lot of work. Might be, we remember the way it was, however, compared to other courses we play all the time, this one is one to pass on. Sorry
Best deal in town
Best value. Great design and well maintained greens and fairways. Played fast for a challenging course.
Great Bargain
I've played Vistoso 5 times this summer and find it the best bargain, particularly since I live on the NW side of town. The course isn't in the immaculate condition it was in it's prime but for the price, including a very good lunch and free range balls it's tough to beat. In much better condition than last year. Fairways are spotty and it's obvious watering is at a minimum (they need to bury some of the exposed drip lines around tee boxes) but the greens roll nice and the course is still a challenging layout with memorable holes. The recent rains have helped. The starter is friendly and food staff very congenial. Pace of play very good for a Sat morning. Only complaint is the 14th hole desert vegetation has grown to almost cause a blind shot to the fairway. Very difficult to determine club selection even though there is distance signage on the tee box.
That aside. I'll be back regularly!
Extremely Slow Play
Challenging course...fairways & some greens suffer from fungus (brown spots)...play was extremely slow with no Course Marshall to assist...hard to get into any kind of rhythm.
