Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Another great day at Black Horse Golf Course
The price rate to play this course is the best deal out there right now. I hope they continue to offer it all summer long.
Would have been nice…
We enjoyed our round, and the fairways and greens are in excellent shape. However, it would’ve been nice if someone had warned us, that much of the rough had been rototilled and was unplayable, and there was a significant amount of construction on the course. I’m sure the locals are aware of this, but being from out of town it came as quite a surprise.
Well
I’ve played this course for years .. unfortunately the power of money is allowing homes to be built directly on the course which has changed the whole layout.
Great course
I really enjoy playing this course even with the construction going on. Just the pace of play was horrible on this occasion I didn’t even get to finish my round because I had another commitment. The group in front of us was extremely slow for only 3 players.
green is terrible
maybe due to aerification. but course should let us know before playing
Golfdoc review
Superb. Please keep your rates reasonable for your retirees. Thanks
It was under the construction. It was noisy and dusty.
I think the golf course staff should let guest know the condition of course is abnormal.
Course is neglected - Stay Away!
It has been a while since I've played Black Horse. It was always a challenging course, but also a lot of fun with it's variances and undulating greens. The course conditions were always good.
Now, the course is, to use as nice a word as I can think of, neglected. The fairways are broken up with grass and dirt, making it very difficult to get off your shot. The roughs are more than rough. It is apparent that a whole bunch of housing is going up in and around the course, and this is what is the focus there. There are courses that cost less than 1/2 as much that play better. I really feel that I'm owed a refund and I'd urge golfers to stay away.
Course is under construction, fairways have not been maintained. Greens recently punched and in poor condition. I have played this course many times and this condition is so poor that it should only be played for a dramatically reduced rate. I was extremely disappointed that the condition of the course was not identified before we played it. I had many other options to play a round of golf and felt completely ripped off and offended by the fact that I paid full fare for a diminished round of golf.
Black Horse is a must play.
Wonderful experience.! Still we’re cleaning up downed trees and construction ongoing new housing development. Conditions good as they are transitioning to a new grass. Layout is fabulous! Very fair. You can tell they are Definitely trying. Got the fried egg, sausage on a grilled English muffin and it was crazy good! Will return to play Bayonet next visit.
Just love it too much!!!
Great course !! always fun!!! Even with all the construction going around there!!!
Hurrst
We have been play blackhorse for 30+ years but will not play again until the construction noise diminishes.
Not worth the money
Blackhorse is not in good condition. There’s a lot of construction going on around the back nine and fairways look dry and unfertilized, with occasional patches of dirt or dry mud. Very few people playing there will rake the sand traps. The greens are in nice condition but be prepared to fix other people’s ball marks.
Awful Course Conditions
Laughable that they charge $115 to play this course that currently has lots of construction going on and patchy fairways at best. Reduce rates or improve the quality of the course.
Very difficult
I've played this course a number of times but I'm not sure I'll go back. The number of bunkers, especially fairway bunkers is ridiculous. There are often 6 or more on a hole. Sand in the bunkers is like concrete and you sometimes have a 60-yard shot with a lip you have to get over. They are now building a huge number of homes on the course so the natural beauty is disappearing. Add greens that are multi-tiered with many breaks. Good luck. The bar is great though!
Brothers at Black Horse
Black Horse is a good challenging coarse that has lots of rolling hill fairways and NO flat greens. The greens are well maintained and will add strokes to any golfer. Pace of play was under 4 hours and the beauty overlooking the Monterey Bay is spectacular.
