About

Holes 18
Type Semi-Private
Style Parkland
Par 69
Length 5315 yards
Slope 119
Rating N/A

Tree-lined fairways and challenging water features abound at the Colvend Golf Club parkland layout, situated on the gorgeous Solway Coast, conveniently located near Dumfries, Southerness, Castle Douglas and Dalbeattie. There are views over the Solway Firth to the Cumbrian Fells and, on a good day, offering a glimpse of the Isle of Man.

The original nine holes (the first nine) are short in distance but are very demanding with small, well-guarded greens and undulating fairways.

The 12th hole, which is arguably the feature hole, needs a long, well-placed drive to a fairway surrounded by out of bounds on the left and trees on the right. It then requires a very well-struck and well-placed shot over water to a contoured green.

The par-4 dogleg 18th hole requires an accurate tee shot between trees right and left and an accurate second shot to a sloping green which is protected by a burn to the front and side, a pond at the rear and trees all around. This hole was featured as one of the most picturesque holes in Scotland in a Scottish Golf Calendar from 2005.

Nice wee challenging course.

The Locals call the first hole "Cardiac Hill", you wont need a degree to work out why when you get there!
Lovely wee course that needs a lot of thought to get your ball in the right position to allow an attack to half of the holes.
Only downside was that non of us could get the pace of the greens as they played pretty slow on the day.
Would defo catch on quicker next time and aim beyond holes.
Defo one we will play again when back in the area.

A little gem.

Don,t be put off by the steepness of the first hole, this is a really decent course to play. Could do with a bit more semi rough but overall we had an enjoyable challenging round of golf.

Disappointing

Maybe it was just the day we chose? The course layout is good with some interesting holes and the fairways are OK but the greens were truly disappointing and marred the day for us. Bobbly, uneven grass, impossible to hit on a line... a case of hit and hope. Was so looking forward to this course and unfortunately left ruing the decision to go there. Won't be back....

Go at Colvend

We were lucky to get a fine dry day although a bit windy. Staff were very pleasant and welcoming. Very glad we hired a buggy, which we noticed most golfers had also done, as there are some steep holes. The first hole is straight up a hill. Fairway grass was a lot longer than our home club so very little run on the ball. The greens were getting a lot of work done to them and one or two were pretty poor condition. This could all be due to Covid lockdown and furloughed staff. If the greens get back to good condition and fairways cut a bit shorter, then this would be a great course as some lovely holes and great views.

Colvend Golf Course

Great views of the coast. Unfortunately the area had received torrential downpours prior to visiting which had flooded parts of the course. The course is tricky in places would like to play it again in drier conditions.

Colvend - very quirky

Short course but very quirky. Starts with a severe uphill. - no level fairways throughout. Course itself in good condition but I wouldn’t rush back. Not my sort of course I’ m afraid.

Second time to play this wee hidden gem. Course was quiet so got round in under 3 hours no problem. Great views over the Solway Firth and on to Cumbria. Staff were friendly and helpful. Will definitely be back. Great value at only £10.

Great course

Course was in fantastic condition for the time of year. Very soft but not wet like I expected in November. Greens were great. Club house was closed and we had the entire course to ourselves. I have played the course before so I can say the staff and the facilities are very good. Highly recommend!!

Hidden Gem

Despite the ravages of this awful summer, Colvend again comes up trumps as one of the friendliest and most challenging holiday courses in Scotland. Having played 546 of them I feel able to comment despite not being a great golfer.
Fantastic views, a real mixture of holes and a great welcome back in the clubhouse makes Colvend a regular venue in my book.
Looking for a 4 ball away day or an outing ? Look no further.

Perfect weather

The weather was perfect and that always makes thing look and appear much better. Myself and playing partner especially enjoyed the back 9 more than the front 9. I would suggest it might be more of a challenge for people who are maybe not that fit, it is quite hilly, some sloping fairways on the front 9. However if you are a golfer, like me not that good, and in the area give it a go, I thoroughly enjoyed the golf at Colvend.
