Punched greens and bad conditions
The greens have recently been punched and are extremely soft (overwatered), slow and full of ball marks. Grounds crew didn’t even remove the plugs from the perimeters of most greens. There is no indication anywhere before you tee off that the greens have been aerated which is unacceptable. The tee boxes are uneven and a mess of weeds and patchy grass that need to be redone. Pace of play is awful. Driving range balls are mostly worthless (cracked, no dimples etc) and the “yardage markers” on the dirt range are seemingly arbitrary distances with no signs to even tell you how far they are. It’s a shame they let this course just be run down and have some of the worst conditions out of all the munis, as the layout is great and would be a top course if anyone cared or knew what they were doing there.
Course conditions
I enjoyed playing today because everything went well.
Course condition Green condition is all good
Poor conditions, overpriced
They’ve really let this place go. The LA City Dept of Rec and Parks puts almost zero money into maintaining these courses, though they charge a premium to play there compared to other courses which are in superior condition. Many tee boxes are covered in crawling weeds and left to grow over. 2 inches of grass on a tee box is unacceptable. Fairways are OK for a muni, however simple maintenance like clearing huge clumps of weeds in the fairways is needed, but the city seems to be too lazy to perform simple maintenance items. The greens are extremely bumpy, slow, and full of ball marks because nobody cares to repair them, and there’s no Marshall to enforce anything. The staff is basically just there to take your money. Bunkers have little to no sand in them, and many of them don’t even have rakes, so people don’t rake them, which means they are full of foot prints. This could be a great golf course if the city of LA would just take care of it, however they don’t. They would rather just take your money and sit on their hands. It’s a shame.
Great course!
First time playing in Griffith park and the Wilson Course. The fairways and the greens were in great conditions. It bothers me that people don't fix their divots on the greens, but the greens otherwise were great!
It was 100degree today, so I was surprised that the fairways looked so green and nice. I spotted deers and a coyote at the course as well :-) I will definitively come back ASAP;-)
It looks difficult to get T-times before 4pm? What’s the reason for this….?
No complaints.
It’s a municipal course so you can’t have high expectations. However, for the price and location. I’ll keep coming back. Course conditions were slight above average with patchy fairways and decent greens. Pace of play can slow down at times. Range offers TopTracer for those who are interested. Chipping area needs an update which I think currently happening.
Fun Course, Slow Pace
Enjoyed my time with friends today playing the course. Once we made it to hole 6, things slowed down. Made it to hole 10 and there’s a line of 4 golf carts. In order to make it an excellent experience, the groups of two shouldn’t take double the 4’s time. Players need to have better awareness.
Course Review
Course was in okay shape. Tee boxes were very inconsistently kept up. Many of them were like hitting out of light rough, almost a necessity to tee up my irons which I don’t normally do. Fairways were in very good shape, as were the greens. Most of the sand traps had either no sand or very little sand, which was disappointing, as I don’t like taking free drops out of bunkers. Price wise, I think there are other courses in the area that give you better value, but I would play here again despite the frustrations I had. Overall, it was a good experience and a challenging course from the back tees.
Course conditions good
I have played here several times and I feel very good every time I play. The course condition and greens are very good.
It had been years since I played Wilson. Definitely nice to be back. Unfortunately, I l believe the greens went through a second light punching not long ago. And they actually rolled decent with the exception of all the unrepaired ball marks and some fungus and/or dried up spots. Tee boxes and fairways were nice. I didn’t play out of any bunkers so can’t comment there. Pace of play solid at four hours. Enjoyed a very tasty hot dog and a pint after the round in the clubhouse with great service from the staff there.
A fine mid summer round
L,A. City Golf has done an amazing job of maintaining and restoring this historic golf venue. From the practice green and range to the first tee the grounds and clubhouse are first rate, A country club atmosphere. All at municipal course pricing.. My only issue is it is nearly impossible to snag tee times due to the Korean golf influx and their gaming the reservation system. If you want to play here contact a certain Mr. Kim and for an additional $5 per player this can be arranged.
