Pittsburgh National Golf Club
About
Formerly known as Deer Run, Pittsburgh National Golf Club has undergone major renovations since management has changed hands over the years, including complete reconditioning of the greens and the addition of 60 new renovated bunkers. The championship golf course that exists today is more challenging than the original though it has retained the same playability. With no blind shots to be found and wide fairways that are player-friendly, the course is inviting to beginners and also offers a casual but interesting round for more advanced players. During the renovation, the club also added a practice facility that includes a grass driving range with heated hitting stalls for year-round use, it is one of the only public grass ranges in the Greater Pittsburgh area. There is also a putting green and chipping area with sand bunkers.

The course was in great condition for this time of year
The layout is challenging. The condition for this time of year was great.
Pleasantly Surprised
My son and I played Pittsburgh National after getting a great rate from GolfNow. This was my second time playing it and it was in much better condition than the last time, which was approx 14 months ago. The pace of play was perfect - we played in under 4 hours. In fact, we had no complaints about anything. We had a great afternoon and can't wait to play it again.
matiams
Staff was not friendly and pace of play was awful(5 1/2 hrs) no ranger. Course was in good shape but if you want to charge then get some help ! It is a shame to wait on every hole for the group ahead of you to tee off. I play 3 times a week and don't need an unfriendly staff and the slowest play you can imagine
decent conditions
greens a bit uneven as to speed
tee boxes rough
fairways /rough ok
traps fair to poor
Nice layout
Love the course layout. good test of many different shots.
Nice course. But
I liked the course and had a great time. But I think it was real close to100 degrees and one of the hottest day of the year and there wasn't nothing to drink on any holes. No water fountain, not big jug of water nothing. There were two Coke machines but when we went to put money in we seen a sign that said out of order. Most courses at least have some kind of drinking water on a few holes. We did get a few waters at the turn but they didn't last long. But other then that the course it self was good.
Not enough carts
We had a 12:07 tee time and they didn't have enough carts so we didn't tee off until 12:45 and then it was a 5+hr round...
Was a really nice layout with challenging holes but not much fun when you have to wait before you can hit every shot.
Spread out the tee times better
Beautiful Hilly Course
Pittsburgh National is a rolling, hilly course north of Pittsburgh. There are few flat holes, and it seems (although I didn't really count) that most of the approach shots are uphill. There aren't many blind shots, and it's fun to play. Pace seemed a little slow at times, and there are some spots and a few bunkers that could use a little TLC. But it was a good round in general, and another course I'd like to play again.
disappointing trend
This course used to be a premier public option in the area. Today is just another non-maintained track. I was very disappointed. No general maintenance. Tee boxes not moved following a busy summer Saturday, as we played Sunday. Garbage bins overflowing with empty beer cans. And, a Sunday afternoon in June with 0% chance of rain, and temps in the 80's, and the snack bar at the turn is closed. This course needs a new GM and a new grounds keeper. Or, better yet, a new owner, as there is so much potential. Plus, we played behind "members", who did not rack traps, nor fixed ball marks on green.
Great track
Course coming back to its previous good condition. One of my favorite layouts in Western PA. All new sand in bunkers , greens in good shape and speed was good. Only minor complaint was fairways needed cut. Can't wait to play it again
Yes Yes Yes
What a joy it is to play 18 on a nice track (pro tee's) with a breeze at you back and the sun on your face. Will definitely play again and again and again! Why did the chicken cross the road, to get to Pittsburgh National GC.
Positive overall experience
Pgh Nat'l is a good layout and the course was in good condition. . . for now. Considering it was early in the PA golf season, it was all positive. . . the question is will it stay that way once play increases and warmer, dry weather kicks in. But based on Golf Now rate, this was a good value.
Great Value
Minus a couple of severely sloped holes, the layout is fantastic. Large, challenging greens and hole variety were highlights. The course, via winter's work and perhaps a slight lack of upkeep is not all it could be, but again a great layout. For the money absolutely terrific- a new go to for me.
Not Again
Why do you post 90 degree rules and dont enforce them? Called the clubhouse about a foresome that decided that doesnt pertain to them. Thats ok Rut up the course.
Why do you post USGA Pace of Play when its not enforced? Started at 12:25 and finished 13 at 4:38 Really?
Greens need to be rolled, tee boxes need grass. Not impressed for a NATIONAL COURSE
Good Value for Great layout
It was early April so the course hadn't recovered from winter, but it was in pretty good shape. Greens are difficult with good pace. One of the best layouts for a public course I've seen and challenging for all levels.
Thank you for your review.
We value everyone feedback and it also gives us the chance to respond to any concerns which will help the facility and improve the golfers experience.
Unfortunately, the only foursome we could find before 12:25pm was at 8:50am that day. We had only 33 players prior to 12:25pm with only 3 twosomes between 11-12am. The majority of the rounds played that day were after 2:30pm.
Regarding the 90 degree rule. We take the rule very seriously and have it in place to protect the course after inclement weather.
Any complaints or observations where the 90 degree rule is not adhered to are quickly acted upon.
