Colonial Country Club
About
Colonial Country Club, located in Fort Worth on the southern banks of the Trinity River and near TCU, is one of the most historic golf clubs in Texas. The club was founded in 1936 by Marvin Leonard, who sought to have a north Texas club with smooth, bent grass greens (unheard of at the time, as many courses had either sand or Bermuda turf). The course was originally designed by Texan John Bredemus and Oklahoma architect Perry Maxwell, who formally worked with Dr. Alister Mackenzie. Holes no. 3-5 are nicknamed the “Horrible Horseshoe” and represent the strongest stretch on the course, featuring a 247-yard par-3 4th hole bookended by long and demanding par 4s. Colonial Country Club hosted the 1941 U.S. Open, won by Craig Wood and was the first time the event was staged in Texas. Despite now playing over 7,200 yards, Colonial maintains a reputation to this day as a ball-striker’s playground. Ben Hogan won the Colonial golf tournament five times. Other multiple winners of this longstanding PGA Tour event include Lee Trevino, Billy Casper, Nick Price and Ben Crenshaw.

Reviews
worth playing
Greens were nice rolled at11. Well maintained, fairways plush and full. Layout is
Straight forward , some water but not too penal. Great 18th with peninsula green, great final hole. Look forward to my next round.
Holiday golf
My wife and I had pleasure of being paired up with a couple of locals who had played the course many times before, it was in great shape from tee to green , a pleasure to play , with the help of my new friends the course was very manageable to play , we will be back here for sure..thanks to all for a wonderful day!!
The course is great
ON THE LINKS
COURSE IN TIP TOP SHAPE GREENS QUICK AND EVERYTHING MANICURED
Great course.
Good value for the money. Would play again. If you live close, you have to play it.
Best in Town
I played here for the first time in April and conditions were very near perfect and this time, 6 later it was just as good. I would like to see the greens a little faster but I always do. I did not use the F&B however the beverage cart person just drove by and raised to hand to say Hi. No big deal, didn't want anything anyway. Not a weed to be found anywhere. The front nine is a little generic. But the back nine is better.
Good deal for the money
The course is in great shape and gives you lots of chances to score if you keep the ball in play which isn't all that hard with some wide fairways. I've played it multiple times and would recommend it.
Not overly tough, but certainly challenging
Course, from the blue tees, is a good test for the average golfer. need to pay attention to pin placement. course not crowded, and no starter, so
pro shop said go out when ready. weather was threatening so schedule thin. 4some went off in front of me with no group in front of them and no one behind me. I never pushed 4some, but they also never made an attempt to waive me through.... jumped ahead on #10 and never saw them or anybody else until #18. Would play it again.
Great Facility
From staff friendliness to the course conditions it was a pleasure to spend my time oh some breathtaking views great place to relax and shoot 18. course is very tight make sure you want to bring your A game.
Great Track
I don't know how it could get much better. We played the blue/white tees at a 136 slope it's a challenge. A great track but very fair. Huge greens so you have to pay attention to pins. Very friendly staff and facilites.
For sure will play it again.
5 tees - a challenge for all handicap levels
With 5 tees - the course can play as challenging as you like.
Several of the fairways are deceivingly narrow, water abounds on many holes.
Greens are fast and roll true. Rough surprisingly thick and difficult to advance ball as far you might think.
Play Here As Soon As You Can
For the money this is it, I live in SW Florida year round and every golfer I know puts Colonial first...above TPC courses etc...
fair course
We were followed by greenskeepers over more than 11 holes. That is not funny. You could always hear noise from the highways.
Course conditions between fair and good. Would never come again.
Great condition but boring
Played the course on a humid 93 degree day in August. Very few other players on the course so I was able to play fairly quickly. Course is in good condition and well maintained but from the forward tees somewhat boring. No hazards to contend with, little or no elevation changes or uneven lies. As always I love the birds in Florida but other courses provide better wildlife viewing. Would only play again at the summer rates.
The course was in great condition
The Colonial is a really nice course and in very good condition. It has a little bit of everything for all types of golfers.
Fantastic!!
I have been playing several courses this month and Colonial Country Club has been the best one yet. The course was in immaculate condition!!! Green and fairways were in great shape. Very pleasant experience.
Great place to play!
A beautiful course that is challenging to any skill level. The course itself is in great shape, which is big because usually courses tend to slip a bit outside of tourist season. Love playing here, just wish we hadn't of gotten rained out!
Well Designed Course, a joy to play
Playing in off peak season with the greens just aerated is probably not the best time to write a review. However, the course is a challenge.
At the time we played, the course was very brown and in places had sandy fairways on 2 holes. Apart from this the course was presented to a high standard.
Note that you really need to bring a GPS device as this lead me into trouble.
Staff were courteous and range facilities great.
The only issue we had were 2 ignorant players in the group of 4 in front. We were a 2 and would have finished the round in 3 hours. Note that these 2 retirees were asked to let us through by the course manager and refused even though we were a 2!
