Reviews
Best Keept secret
Great course for the money. If it were in Houston, it would cost a lot more and probably packed.
Recommended
If you don't have to drive hours to the place, I would strongly recommend this course. Great conditions and well maintained.
Greens are good.
Beautiful greens
The greens on this course are great shape! smooth and not too fast, perfect for me. I've only been playing for a couple of years and really enjoy this course.
good course great value
I have played here many times and the conditions were usually very good but last year and this spring the greens gradually got worse and i stopped playing there.Gave it a try again this week and was pleasantly surprised as the conditions are very good again.Medium speed soft greens that putt true. The course looks unremarkable at first but the more you play it, the more you will find subtle and challenging features. It can be windy but the design allows for it.Great value. I,ll be playing there again.
Fun course
It was a perfect day and hardly anyone on the course, except some A&M students. Of course being Baylorites we had to pass them.
Great course
I played this for the first time on a beautiful day. The course was in excellent shape.
There is water in play on almost every hole, but with a little care (luck ha ha) you can avoid it. I only lost one ball.
the greens complexes are interesting with plenty of variety.
It was worth the drive from Sugar Land and reasonably priced.
A Quick 9
I've played Pecan Lakes several times and usually enjoy the experience. I had a little time on my lunch hour, so I got a GREAT price on Golf Now and zipped out to the course for a quick 9. There were not many people on the course at noon on a workday, so I had no waits anywhere.
I managed to keep the ball where I could find it and have a reasonable swing at it so the round went really quickly. I played the front 9 in about an hour!
The name Pecan LAKES should give you a hint about the predominant challenge to this course. Keep your ball out of the water and you will have a pleasant round.
I shot my first sub 40 nine hole score that day, a 38 with 3 pars & 2 birdies!! A shame I didn't have someone to share the excitement.
Extraordinary value for weekend play!
Course is in great shape and well manicured. Greens are perfect - not too fast and true. Course is easy to get to and seems to be a well kept secret!
Worth the short drive from College Station
Hidden in Navasota, Texas is a well-kept course called Pecan Lakes. The fairways aren't terribly narrow, the rough is long and there is water in play on a number of holes, some of which are rather sneaky in their placement. No giant pot bunkers although sand can become an issue in the fairways, if you're not accurate. Picked a GREAT day to play, cloudy, no wind and 80 degrees. Played w/my 12-yr-old son and it was super.
Great course with a lot of water but open fairways
This was the best bang for the buck. You would expect to pay more just for the golf cart fee. The greens were very good, the fairways were green and cut to about 1 inch, the 2nd cut was 2 inch but not so deep you couldn't out. You have water along most fairways but the fairways are wide enough that you can stay out of trouble. I have paid $35 a round there and felt the price was good, So playing for half the price was even better. I will be back
maintenance issues
More maintenance needs to be done on the greens and fairway. Greens were real patchy. Grass in fairways was tall.
Worth the drive
I like the layout of this course! Some challenging, some interesting, some different types of shots and holes. Excellent short game practice area. Worth the drive.
This course is a great lay out.
This course is very challenging. It has lots of lakes and sand. It is a links course is challenging as well as fun.
Greens In Terrible Shape
I used to play this course frequently then backed away when the upkeep went downhill. The fairways and tee boxes are getting better since that time but they completely lost the greens during that period. Recovery of those greens has been slow at best and still has a long way to go. At least half of the greens are still bare of turf and extremely bumpy where the turf has started to regrow. Calling ahead to ask the conditions of the greens is pointless, they'll just say "they are much better", don't believe them. I'll only risk going back to check for myself on a "hot deal" tee time price.
Had an enjoyable 18 holes!
Enjoyed the wide fairways, the fact there weren't many trees--my home course is very wooded, and off the fairway will cost you dearly. I was hitting fairly straight all day, but still saved some strokes when I went wild a few times. Was able to recover fairly easily.
The greens weren't the best I've played on, but they didn't cause me much trouble. Hard and fast, which I like.
Lots of water, but, again, I was hitting straight, and it never came into play.
I enjoyed the round very much, and will definitely play the course again.
Worth the trip
This was my second time out to Pecan Lakes, and I left just as satisfied as the first time. Course is in great shape from tee to green, but the greens can certainly use some work. If you can get past the bumpy greens that don't always give you a true roll, you'll find yourself enjoying this course. Great deal for the money, and if you can keep clear of water you should score well!
Nice open course
Good course to open up with driver on most holes wide open fairways. Greens are terrible at the moment but great value to hop onto a play with a cart for $14. The pace was slower than usual and I play extremely fast when I play alone I played through three foursomes that held me up for over 2 hours. Normally I play 18 in 2 hours but was around 4 hours this last time but guess that's to be expected on a holiday weekend. If you can play this course for under $20 go try it out its a fun course for big hitters off the tee box!
Relaxing Round
Overall the course is in decent shape. The greens however, are horrendous. I would compare the condition of the greens to a dried up, black clay creek bottom. The greens were extremely hard, dry, and had black dirt that was so dry, they were cracking and flaking up. The fairways and the rough were in great condition. Not sure what happened with the greens. Hopefully in the coming weeks they will get better. I also think some of the yardage markers are off a bit so take a range finder if you have one. All in all, pretty wide open and relaxing day.
Some greens aren't in real good shape but overall the course is not bad for winter time
I have played Pecan Lakes numerous times. This was the first time using Golfnow. Great deal by the way. Pecan Lakes is a fun layout. This last time I played it was very windy which made the course play much longer. #1 green was a huge disappointment. Pecan Lakes does not overseed apparently and the #1 green was about 60% covered in some sort of weed that made putting a real challenge. Their greens are never really fast and with these clumps...well it was about impossible. #1 was the worst green of them all. Some of the others had these same weeds but not like #1. Some people may play #1 and go back in and demand their money back. That green was that bad.
Sand traps are a little different there. The sand is pretty deep and it is very dense. I have played elsewhere on that same type sand. It is almost like tiny pebbles. Very difficult. Stay out of the bunker.
Fairways are obviously dormant and pretty firm but it is wintertime in Texas.
I think I have met most of the staff there over the course of the last year I have been working in Navasota and all are very friendly.
All in all, for the money...good value. Do not expect pristine conditions even in the summer time but considering there is no other golf anywhere with 20 or 30 miles...not bad at all.
Not worth the drive. Greens are patchy. Coming from Cypress and Legendary Oaks is 30 minutes closer and in better shape for $10.00 to $15.00 with cart !
