Applewood Golf Course
About
The public, 18-hole Applewood Golf Course is a popular golf destination for families. The course is 5,992 yards, playing to a par of 71. The course is located in Golden, against the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The course opened in 1961 and was designed by J. Press Maxwell. Maxwell wanted to maintain the natural beauty of the landscape and he successfully incorporated it into elements of the course. Another trace of Applewood Golf Course's scenic appeal is in the wildlife that is often spotted by golfers. The golf course has slight elevation changes as well as water hazards but it is still suitable for all levels of golfers.

Course in good shape
Course was in good shape, played very well, staff was very friendly, not crazy busy for a Friday am so we got our round in just under 4 hours, good course overall
Expect slow play
Been goin to applewood for years and the course has got in better condition the last few years but they seem to overbook on tee times and every time we play weekends it's soooooo slow and backed up. I'll keep playin the course but on weekdays. wish they would do something about the slow play
fine friday.
the course was in pretty good shape. some of the vegetation that normally like the course was removed, makes it easier to get offline. pace of play was great.
Fun course
First time playing this course. Pretty good shape, greens coming back from top dressing last week but still good. Not a long course, pretty easy. Very crowded with a tournament going on as well. 5 hour round but will come back when no tournament going on.
Early Season
Course was dry. Greens were punched probably 3 weeks prior (my guess), very dry and extremely SLOW. Greens need more water. Many of the 'Trouble" ares have been mowed. Pace of play was very good (surprisingly)! Overall a good early season round @ Applewood. I will be back. . .
Terrible
The clubhouse is closed for repairs, but they keep the course open. Covered in 1-3 inches of goose droppings from hole 1-18, Applewood is a classically mistreated golf course that I would not recommend.
Two Marshall's are employed to interrupt your game very two holes, but don't expect a beverage cart, or hotdog for that matter, as the kitchen was out of food at 2pm.
The course itself is in the kind of shape you would expect an unkempt course to be, with the addition of a few hundred tons of goose droppings. Golf elsewhere.
Windy day but okay
It was windy and cold so there was nobody on the course so we finished in 3 hours. Course was in pretty good shape for February. What can I say? It's winter golf in Colorado.
Makes you think
You can't just grab a driver off the tee every hole here. A lot of dog legs, some of them a sharp 90-degree turn. I really enjoyed having to figure out not only what club to hit from the fairway but on each tee too.
Enjoyable coarse
I had a great time at this coarse. From the checking in to cart return. This is one of the few places you can get Herman Joseph's on tap. The range has huge yardage banners so you don't have to guess or remember marker colors. Nice putting & chipping practice areas. The coarse it self has lots of variety, water, doglegs, elevation changes. The greens were in great shape & faster than I expected them to be. This was the 1st time I have played this coarse but it won't be the last.
Good all-around golf
You get everything - trees, sand, decent fairways. May holes play a little shorter than other courses, but a few play quite long. Back-to-back par5's and a par 3 that suggests a layup give it unusual challenges. But a gorgeous place to play, and it's rumored to be more chemical-free than most, owing to its being over the Coors water table. I'd play here again and again.
Great price, very enjoyable.
Bought one of the "Hot Deal" tee times and at that price it was a fantastic deal. Although the clubhouse is in poor condition (bathroom was disgusting) and it's not the most well maintained course, the layout is great for beginners. Nice wide fairways and decent greens. This is a course where you can let it rip on most holes without too much trouble or penalty for a slightly way word shot. Most laid back course I've played and best deal I've found so far at the "Hot Deal" price. Will definitely be back more often with friends. Pace of play was very quick but there weren't many people out when I went.
Haven't played here for years but I found that nothing has changed.
Course condition was very inconsistent. Fairways with numerous areas of GUR and standing water mixed inexplicably with dry patchy bald spots. Greens were poorly maintained. Essentially a sanctuary for non-golfers, geese and their droppings. My group finally left the course without completing our round as the pace of play slowed to a painful crawl in front of us. Holes 14-16 took well over an hour. I was prepared for a typical Sunday afternoon round but not 6 hours ?!?! This isn't golf. Talk about a nice walk ruined......
Home of the 6 1/2 hour round
Not one to write reviews but this horrible experience warranted a review. Booked an 8:40 am Tee Time on a Saturday.... we unfortunately were not informed that we were the first public tee time after the entire mens league went off. After 9 holes of 3 groups per tee box waiting to tee off and multiple people literally walking off the course due to pace of play we realized it took us 3 1/2 hours to play 9 holes (wish I was kidding). Since me and my playing partner both had good rounds going after 9 we decided to stick it out. On the 12th hole we finally see a Marshall and ask him about the ridiculous pace of play and his response was "well thats what you get on a Saturday morning" and so I respond with "oh so 7 hour rounds are normal here?" and he basically told me I was lying and I guess he was right because we finished at 6 and 1/2 hours. It was bad enough that a mens club member in the group in front of us withdrew from the mens club championship because he said he didnt have time to finish the round. This is a course Ive played 10 times and its a fun easy course but Ill never go back.
Pace of Play
the pro shop was not friendly at all, no water at the pro shop, got water at the bar from bar tender, it was warm.
Kids everywhere, talking yelling on the course. SLOW SLOW pace of play. We left before we finished 18 holes, because we were at the 5 hour mark. Tired of waiting. Cart was dirty. Would not recommend this course.
Wide fairways and most of the greens are big.
The fairways are in great shape, but the greens are a little rough. This is a great course for those days when you just want a relaxing game without being overly challenged on every shot selection. I've been playing here off and on for thirty years and it is still one of my favorite courses.
A good course for beginners
I had some time to kill in Denver and thought I'd try Applewood. Course conditions were pretty bad and pace of play was way too slow. I quit after nine holes.
One compliment I'd give is that the staff seems to do a great job with their youth program. Loads of very young kids were there for a golf camp or lessons the day I was there. That's good to see.
Pace of Play Ruined the Round
Major backups with an average time of 6 minutes per tee box waiting for the group in front to clear. Course marshall was not warning the group in question as far as I could tell.
Seems that there were too many tee times booked due to the deal on this very website.
Worst coarse in Denver in terms of grounds.
poor golf coarse. The layout was really bad and the ground must have been kept by the three blind mice
Nice layout of the course.
The layout of the course was great. The only complaint was that there were places that need water. The ground was like hitting off concrete in the fairway in places. Other than that it was great.
This course needs a lot of work.
This could be a nice course. It has a few challenging holes. However, the condition of the course is terrible. Several of the tee boxes look like driving range tee boxes, divet ridden and difficult to find a clear spot to place the ball or even stand. The fairways are OK, but need considerable work. The bunkers are like wet cement. Good luck getting a sand save. The greens are dried out with dead grass and bare spots. I've played this course several times and these conditions seem to be the norm with no evidence that they intend to make improvements, with one exception: two of the tee boxes have been resodded, but aren't ready for use. I will not be back and do not recommend.
