Rough course
Yardage markers are incorrect. Greens are bumpy and inconsistent. There was a random party of people who weren't playing causing a disturbance on the 5th tee. Overall a poor experience.
Pleasant Visit
Traveling north I like to break my rides up, so nine holes on a Saturday afternoon sounded perfect. I missed my booked time but the staff was INCREDIBLE and got me paired up with three locals and we had a blast. Course was maintained well although I was unlucky to catch the greens punched and sanded still made a few putts and played well. I will use this course to break up the drive again, would recommend 10/10
poor conditions
The grass is very thin on the fairways and I had a lot of shots off of dirt.
Great Day of Golf
Excellent course and will definitely be back again.
Friendly walk in the woods
What a great all around experience. Could not have had a better time. Highly recommend this course.
Another Wonderful Experience!
If you haven't played this course I'd encourage you to take a step back in time where the people are friendly, the price point reasonable, wonderful scenery and nice condition, and unlike many courses today, it's walkable. Black Oak is always an enjoyable golfing experience!
PERFECT
Wanted to post a more current review since this track has everything in a golf course. Blind shots, doglegs, forced carries, sloping greens and design character that appeals to the eye. Since it has no straight holes except for the par 3's, you will need to play a draw if you can as most holes bend to the left. The par3 over water is well thought out, balls a bit long or left tend to roll back to the putting surface. Most of the par 4's have decent landing space and put a premium on approach shots (no 2, 3, 5, 8 and 9). The greens are always good and extremely fast downhill. Course is easily walkable for most if moderate inclines are your thing.
A shadow of its former self
I used to live not far from this course and played it often. It's very difficult; from the most forward tees (mostly red, some gold), 2646 yards, the slope rating for men is 118. As long as you know what you're getting into, the course used to be fun to play because it's in a scenic location and was in very good shape. Not so any longer. Fairways were full of dirt clods from aeration. Very dried out generally; lot's of brown spots. Greens were reasonably good. Service in the pro shop was fine as usual. Water containers had no jugs; rather a sign inviting golfers to buy bottled water for a buck. The value was fine in terms of a $5 green fee but the hilly terrain mandates riding for many including me. At $9 for nine holes for the cart, functionally $28 for 18 holes, there are many better deals on GN considering the course condition. Plus if you wanted to play 18 lumping in the $5 GN fee the total cost wold be $39 with rack rates for the other nine and cart fee; not close to a value. This was once viewed as one of the best nine hole courses in Nor Cal. A shame. Maybe the "construction" which a couple of players told me was the purpose of the torn up fairways will be over soon but I won't be back to find out.
Hidden jewel in the foothills!!
Nice overall course pretty well maintained.
greens were in good shape
fairways were well taken care of with not a lot of
dead grass or hard pan dirt.
The one & only negative on the course was the sand,
traps(hard clay). This course is more setup for position golf vs. long ball hitters.
The price is right & definitely worth the drive to get out
of town for a day of golf. Thanks Dean L.
Not long but tricky
Conditions of the course improving all the time. Greens in very good shape but a little slow. Course is a lot of fun to play because you have to shape your shots. It’s not a grip it and rip it course.

Hi, thanks for writing us a review. It's great to hear that you think our course is improving all the time. We appreciate the fact that you recognize the work that goes into our course. Thanks again and we hope to see you soon.
A gem in the foothills.
The course is in good shape and is the best 9 hole layout in Northern California. It challenges your entire game. The pro, Carol French, played on the LPGA tour and is a very good teacher. Very friendly staff.

Hi Lant,
Thank you for leaving such a nice review. It is quite the compliment to hear we are the best 9 hole course in the area. We will continue to work hard so you can keep saying that. Thanks again and we hope to hear from you soon.
Enjoyable 9 Holes
This is a nice 9 hole course. It is great for walking. The only issue is the 2 1/2 hours it took to play 9.
Full sized 9 hole challenge
A perfect setup for a left handed player with a wicked slice, you'll find plenty of holes that dogleg left on this par 36 track. Still a great course, especially when it's dry.
Black Oak or Black Eye?
I play this course 30 times a year, and have gotten very used to it. I will tell you to NEVER play on Women's Day! The womans group is rude and will walk into your play at 9am and start their shotgun start without regard to others playing! Then they will play 2-3 shots from every spot, and slow play all your way to the mental sanitarium. So having said that, if you play on a day that is other than WOMEN'S Day... you will have a great time. I find the grounds well manicured, the greens nice and challenging...the fairways free of obstacles except the occasional rock outcropping and lots of Deer. The staff is so very gracious and understanding. They need to purchase new carts, as every time I have been there I have had one problem or another with them, flat tire, will not run etc. Overall I rate this course a solid 4 stars! Auburn Black Oak is a very nice and friendly place to play or pick up a game! Your wait will be minimal and the play is fast! I love this course except on WOMEN'S DAY!
I'm a Black Oak man
My favorite course for iron play. This course plays to target golf over distance. I drive 300, but my love is in my irons.

We are happy to hear you enjoyed your time at our course. We can tell you have visited before and it's great that you keep coming back. Thanks again and we look forward to seeing you again.
