Bunkers unplyable
Course layout is nice, greens in decent condition other than 3 or so that had been punched. But what ruined the round was absolutely unplayable bunkers. No sand, mostly mud. You would have had to rake a spot and place you ball in it to get a poor lie. They have never beed even average, but right now just play as ground under repair.
Better than expected
I hadn't played Avery in at least 8 months but was pleasantly surprised with the good course conditions. Greens were in really decent shape and rolled smooth. Very different from when I last played here and they were terrible.
Overall, nice round with decent pace of play (4.5 hours). The course is overpriced but had a nice Sunday with solid conditions.
Still love the course, but too pricey
10 years ago I used to play Avery Ranch 1-2 times a month for no more than $80 on the weekend. The only reason I don’t play it more is it’s now $130. The course was in great shape but the greens were very soggy (some puddles) on the first 3-4 holes from over watering. Once it dried out, the green were a little slower than I remembered. Pace of play wasn’t an issue as we had the 3rd tee time of the morning and finished in just under 4 hours. Staff was great, and I will be back, just not as much as I would like because of the price.
Boy Times Have Changed
This used to be a great course with a lively restaurant. 3 hours 20 min to play 11 holes and finally gave up. 9 min intervals between tee times and no Marshall. $75 to play at 4pm. $55 for a high school player. Greens were really slow and bumpy. Won’t be back. Not worth it and don’t have time for a 5 1/2 hour round
All you want in a challenging course
Played on a Monday afternoon 130pm. Pace of play a little slow but nothing frustrating on the front, back nine picked at good pace. Greens excellent soft, smooth conditions with plenty of backspin 160-170yds and closer. Fairway grass was tight as expected this time of year but ground moist so it wasn’t hardpan. Not a beginner course whatsoever. Position golf course that favors straight ball or a little draw or fade…no slicing or hooking players. Greens ranged from small to large, fairways were tight to medium width only a few holes I’d consider wide. Better be emotionally ready for this course.
Overall good, fairways could use work
The greens were in really good shape, but a few fairways had very little grass which made approach shots tough. Overall would recommend playing though.
Avery
The course is one of the best in the area. The pace of play was terrible. Even though we had an early morning tee time, there were some beginners in the groups in front of us. 2 hours and 45 minutes to play the front 9 is not acceptable. Not blaming the course but they need to marshall it a little better. The course is always in good shape and enjoyable.
Good course
Paid over $100 for a 1:48pm tee time. Wild what prices have gotten to but Avery Ranch is a solid course. Nothing spectacular but greens were very good.
Crowded
Nice Friday afternoon is not the time to play this course. Very crowded and course of play didn’t seem like it was being directed.
Frost Delay
We didn't get to play... .Club said they tried to notify us about a frost delay that caused a 1.5-2 hour delay but contact us because there was not a phone number available due to using the GolfNow app to reserve the time. There is a spot in the app for a phone number, so they either didn't try or the GolfNow app doesn't work right. Can't blame them for a frost delay, but it would've been nice not driving all the way out there only to be told this....and lose the $40 fee for reserving on the GolfNow app. The golf shop folks offered use range balls for practice to at least help the situation.
Slow & Overpriced
Having now played it a couple times recently, the biggest problem with the experience is the pace of play & availability of the practice facilities.
I’ve never had a round under 4hr 45mins and unless you’re early to the course in the morning, getting a range spot can be difficult.
The course is in good condition and a fun one to play but the pace of play really brings down the experience. I’d expect this from a municipal course with a super low price but for the premium they charge, it’s a little ridiculous.
Poor Pace of Play
As usual, another slow round of golf. Good luck finding a spot on the range and putting green. I'm still trying to figure out how they convinced PGA of America to put this course on the top 5 list for austin. They rob you on the green fees.
Aside from all that, the course conditions were good. I'm sure it's a good value if you can play during the week.
Lot of cart path only
Even though it has not rained in a few days, 6 or 7 holes were cart path only for seemingly no reason. Course was beautiful but pace of pay was extremely slow
Be prepared for a 5 hour round
Nothing said here isn’t said below in other comments but the pace of play is one of the worst of all golf course. Teravista, a sister course isn’t great but I play these two course monthly and Teravista is always 30-1hr faster.
The marshalls just drive around but don’t actually target the source of the problem, otherwise, you’d not see countless reviews of slow play.
The conditions are generally pretty good. The cost is insane but people keep paying it so I guess it’s simple supply and demand…although, I wish they’d charge even more and space the tee times out for a better experience. 8 minute tee time spacing is absurd. When the economy pulls back if it hasn’t already, the demand will fall and they will have cut off their noses to spite their faces. Staff is friendly, the putting green is always packed, they’ve had a small putting green closed for what seems like over a year or more. The range is fine except there’s people who will get 200-300 balls under their membership benefits if free balls and literally stay in bays for hours. They bring snacks and make a whole afternoon out of it…really respectful stuff for the game and just, life in general. Like many reading this, I’ve played 100s of courses, this has to be one of the worst run in the business. Maybe someone should write a letter or tweet or make a video of their experience and send to the PGA of America as this is surely not a top 5 course for all of Austin. But, there’s only so many course around so all is containers keep playing. For the money, star ranch or forest creek or even shadow glen is a much better value…or Teravista
Greens immaculate condition
Greens are best I’ve seen all season. Fairways are good. Tee boxes good. Greens exceptional. Recommend getting in a round before Mother Nature has her say.
But deer population is out of control. 9th Hole trampled and rutted up bad. Bring a crossbow and have fun!
Pace of play is a HUGE problem
I played on 11/11/2023. I played 12 holes in 3 hours and 40 minutes. Started at 1:39 pm but didn’t get to finish because pace was very slow and it got dark. Don’t play after noon and expect to finish before sunset.
