Classic FLA Golf

Nice course in Orange Lake resort. Was leery about the comments about conditions, but saw no course issues anywhere. Pace started well, then slowed, then crawled. (Kind of like the cart, that died after 9 holes.) A bit pricy perhaps, but if you don't pay then maybe the course conditions aren't what they should be.

Getting Better

Barrington is coming around slowly but surely. The conditions are better overall, bunkers are hit or miss (but you can play as GUR), greens hard but puttable. Course layout is great with undulating fairways and multiple doglegs. Very friendly staff. Give it a go.

An Up and Down Round [And Side to Side] :-)

The course undulates up and down the fall line that runs through GA. Its shortness is offset by the difficulty in getting a level lie. The greens are small, inverted saucers - tough to get it to stick and challenging on up-and-downs. Several holes are blind or semi-blind. Balls will keep running, often into unmaintained areas. Greens not particularly smooth. Bunkers are dirt; fortunately not many. Birdhouses at 150 yards are the main markers; tough to see the 100-yard stones. Course does not return to pro shop after 9 holes, so stock up. Lots of coolers. Range consists of a half-dozen mats.

Factor in what you'll pay and you should have a fun round. Would play again.

Perfect Day for a Fun Round

70s with low humidity and a light breeze: let's play 36! GA Veterans is a course anyone can play and enjoy. Water, bunkers, tiered greens, rolling terrain that often doesn't leave a level lie, and all at a good rate can't be beat. Course was in good condition overall although damp in some places: Exception: greens were hard and not real smooth. Fivesomes seem common, but they seemed to move along. Not much water on the course. (And $0.50 for a cup w/ ice?)

Would definitely play here again and urge others to do so!

Classic FLA Course

Holiday GC is what you expect in Florida: lush, lots of water, sand, heat, etc. This was a fun course and one you should definitely play in the PCB area. Fairways are lush (with more filled divots than I've ever seen). Greens were a bit slow as they'd been aerated lately. Took a while to figure out the breaks. Rough will grab you if you find it. Some tough par-3s particularly when the PM breezes blow. Biggest challenge are several dogleg holes where you'll need to cut the dogleg (tight!) or face a long 2nd shot.

No water, but there are drink carts on the front and back nine. The course is very well marked on every sprinkler head. What is not well marked are the water hazards, several of which line holes. Not a red stake to be seen. Speaking of colors, the blue flags (marking pin is back) are so faded they're indistinguishable from whites.

Fun Time in the Golden Isles

A fun, well-maintained course in the middle of St. Simon's Island. Course is not long and is very playable. Got off early and wheeled around at a good pace. Tee boxes and fairways are lush. Bunkers, dog legs, rough, and a few water hazards turn up the challenge just enough.

Greens had recently been sanded, had some rough patches, and were rather slow. Bunkers need some work; hardpan in many, some with grass. If you're in one, think chip not splash shot. Driving range was closed for repairs. :-(

Would play it again.

Classic Mountain Golf

Once you get there (don't trust Apple Maps) and wait out the frost delay (started after noon for a 10 AM tee time), had fun a typical mountain course. Short, lots of elevation changes, decent shape although very wet. Beautiful views, lots of creeks. Will try again in summer or fall.
No water on course, no restrooms (a couple Port-A-Johns), no rakes in bunkers (??), no beer sold (???), and you don't return to the clubhouse after #9.

While course is listed on GolfNow, it's apparently never had a tee time there.

You'll Feel Like A Prince... 4+*

at King and Prince, aka Hampton Club. A beautiful course set among the live oaks and Spanish moss. Very well maintained course at the north end of St. Simon's Island. Not too long. Hit it straight and you'll do well. The four marshland holes are eerily beautiful, if a little forced. Staff was great. Kudos to the starter for putting me on #10 when a late foursome showed up. Superb clubhouse.

*I would give K&P five stars except the greens had been punched, all the fringes had been sodded recently, and several holes were boggy. Also, while all the sprinkler heads have yardages, there are no yardage stakes (i.e. find a sprinkler head) and there's no map of the holes either at the tee boxes or on the scorecard. Buy a yardage book?

Irish Parkland Jewel

This course, a former host of the Irish Open, is at the Adare Manor Resort and can easily be confused with the Adare Manor Golf Course next door. (The photo above is actually from the latter!) This is a world-class course with corresponding everything. Beautiful and challenging with several holes along the River Maigue and a small lake. Course was in great shape, except they had just punched and sanded the greens which when mowed in the damp made putting very tough. (Got a deal including rental clubs because of it.) Spectacular views of the Manor itself coming in on both nines. Superb facilities and a great staff. Course winds through the trees with some elevation changes for extra challenges.

Muni with Great Views

This par-69 course is next to the better (known) Adare Golf Resort. It's a tight little course with several multiple tee boxes, so get ready for cries of "Fore!" The views around an old friary and graveyard are great. Course is quirky with odd doglegs of the "how far can I hit it" variety. Seems to be a local haunt while the visitors go next door. Crowded with slow play, at least from the group who insisted on marking EVERY putt. Deidre in the pro shop was an absolute joy. Miserable windy drizzly day - perfect Irish golf weather.

South GA Gem

This course is just off I-75. Rolling terrain through the woods and a pecan grove. The day was miserable and the course was soggy from recent rains, but played well. Greens are very good, more tiered than undulating. (Seems like every hole was on the back shelf, perhaps for dryness.) Fairways are what you'd expect in Tift County, the home of Tift turf. The course is very playable with a little it of everything: water, bunkers (fairway and greenside), doglegs. The new clubhouse should be ready soon. Will return when it's ready and weather is better.

Minor downsides: course is poorly marked (100-150-200 stones only) and hole routing is confusing. In both cases, the scorecard helps, but more is needed. Asphalt cart paths are deteriorating badly in some places.

Possibly the Greatest Deal on GolfNow

How many courses on GolfNow have hosted a PGA event? The Mountain View course hosted the Buick Southern Open for many years. This is an outstanding course in top condition. Greens are fast with many subtle and not-so-subtle breaks so placing your approach is key. Woods line most of the holes, with little water, no OB, and no houses. However, multiple large bunkers surround many greens and along some fairways. Part of the Callway Gardens complex. Superb practice facilitiies and a top notch pro shop. A Hot Deal here might be the best value round of golf you will ever play.

If More Courses Were Like Twin City CC....

there'd be a lot more golfers! A very fun course. Front nine is pretty wide open and fairly flat. The back nine is more enclosed with elevation changes and water. Very good conditions. Greens a little slow; probably just needed cutting. They rolled well and slopes added challenges. The fairways had undulations that might give you a tricky lie or two. Whipped around in 2:20!

Minor nit: Cart paths - paved or otherwise - are quite bumpy. Walking is very doable though.

Great Deal, Fun Course

Had fun last year so came back again. Played from the tips which adds real challenges (maybe too much?) on holes like #6, 9, 12, and 18. Course was in great shape, except for the greens which still showed signs of aeration and sanding. (April review notes this too so...?) Undulating greens add challenges. Staff was great. Nothing to eat except snacks though. Right off I-75. Will be back.

Out of Business?

I played here years ago (max GolfNow back-date is one year) but the course now appears to be out of business. You can't find any current information on it and a satellite view of the course shows trees growing in the fairways and general lack of upkeep.

Thought I'd post this so someone doesn't try to visit.

Mountain Magic (But Move It)

The Good: A beautiful course at Brasstown Valley Resort. Not a true mountain course; a "links course" as the starter put it. Not quite that, but very open. Undulating terrain, lots of water and bunkers. The latter were more like Florida courses than mountains. Several "bite off all you can" tee shots, plus some blind ones. The greens are unbelieavabye fast and with the slopes you can easily putt off the green. Fringes have a slight hump to prevent that, but that makes it tough putting just on or off the green. Course is in great shape all around. Very friendly and helpful staff, and a great deal too.

The Bad/Ugly: Course marked with 150 yard flags and on cart paths, but really needs more. Get a yardage book and/or range finder. Course doens't return after nine. Halfway house closed; cart did come around though. Greens are crazy fast; better stick it or it'll roll off. Worst: Pace of play. Lack of markings, carts on path/90 degree, blind shots, environmental areas, crazy greens, etc. will feed this. Two foursomes of foreigners - one male, one female - were making a day of it. Every green looked like a surveying party. I finally just skipped a hole to pass them. Nice courses at reasonable rates can bring out the duffers, so check the tee sheet accordingly if you can.

Definitely one to play!

Great Course, Great Deal

Southern Hills is in outstanding shape. Tees, fairways, and greens are lush, bunkers are maintained, and there's even some real rough. The greens are challenging with lots of subtle and not so subtle breaks, but they roll true. Practice facilities are unsurpassed: huge pristine range, putting and chipping greens. The course has really matured since I played it years back, with a lot of the shaggier areas being dealt with. Bonus points for being very well marked.

Great Mix of Playability and Challenge: 4.5

Pine Hills offers a great variety of holes. Some wide open, some tight, doglegs both ways, and some forced carries. Bunkers (green and fairway), water, and marshy woods up the challenge. The course is in great condition: tee boxes, fairways, rough, and greens. Not too many flat putts on the greens, but they roll true. This hidden gem is right off I-75 - not that you'd know it though. Had a blast and will be back.

Minor quibbles: The course could be better marked. Stakes are better than stones or spinkler heads. And #12 is one weird hole. It's shaped like North and South America (seriously!#, with the tee at Tierra del Fuego and the green in Alaska. Unless you can drive the ball across the "Pacific" and land it in Mexico, you'll have to hit a blind cut to Brazil. Watch out for the "Atlantic" #hidden# on your second shot.
