The Landings Golf Club - Trestle/Bluff
Played On 8/4/2013Among the Best Courses in Middle Georgia: 4.5 Stars
The Landings is a great course. (The 7/24 review about needing work must be for another course.) It is long and challenging, with OB and hazards abounding. But six sets of tees let you choose your skill level. The greens aren't too tough, but can run quick even in winter. With all the rain, the rough is up - adding to the challenge. New management is in place and has upgraded the irrigation to keep things green. Holes 2-5 are about the toughest set around including the 600+ yard 4th along the swamp. Practice areas are unsurpassed: large range and putting green, separate chipping green with bunker, even a bunker on the range. Pace of play is rarely an issue. Great people too.
International City Golf Club
Played On 7/20/2013Best Deal You May Ever Find in a Muni
International has been in business for a long time under various owners and is now run by the city of Warner Robins. It is your classic municipal course, so set expectations accordingly. That being said, it is in pretty good shape. The recent reviews being all over the place is strange. Intl is a quirky course: par 34 on the front, 38 on the back. Front is tight and narrow; many folks won't need to hit driver - but on the other hand have at it! Back opens with loooong par-5s then some tight holes with spring-fed ponds. Practice facility is decent. Yes, there may be crowds at times particularly retirees.
That being said, you can get a Hot Deal to play here for less than $10. You can't play or get a cart for that anywhere else. If you want to play golf, rather than have a golfing experience, Intl is for you. Great place to learn the game.
Delray Beach Golf Club
Played On 6/14/2013Play, Speed, Price, Course - What More Do You Want?
Whipped around in 2.5 hours as a Friday AM twosome. Lush course, very playable and very well maintained. Some water, lots of bunkers. When in Delray, do it!
Atlantis Country Club
Played On 06/10/2013Outstanding Course
Very well maintained. Lush fairways and smooth greens. Not a typical Florida course, as water hazards are minimal. Keep it in play and you'll score well.
Never saw a drink cart and water on the course is limited to a couple drinking fountains. Hmm... Not good for FLA in summer. Cannot hit woods on range.
Atlantic National Golf Club
Played On 06/09/2013Nice Course - But Play it When It's Dry
A classic Florida-style course with lots of water and bunkers. Well maintained and very playable.* Tough par-3s. Great starter.
*There had been lots of rain so many parts of the course were soggy or worse. A couple holes were altered due to the wetness. Worst part = the GPS-equipped "nanny carts" would slow down or even stop if you were somewhere they didn't want you to be. You had to reverse out when stopped. Grrr... Since the course is poorly marked, tough to get yardages if you can't take your cart to the ball.
Barrington Hall Golf Club
Played On 5/30/2013Challenging Layout, Needs Lots of Attention
Barrington is a challenging course with narrow fairways and lots of elevation changes routed through very nice housing . You must be able to hit the ball straight, as every hole is bordered by tight OB (too much) or deep woods. Tough par-3s.
When Barrington opened, it was one of the top courses in Middle GA. It fell on hard times and is not close to what it used to be. Fairways are mostly okay, but bare spots abound. Greens were heavily sanded. Many were clearly hurting. Rocks abound; some intentional, some not. Bunkers are a joke, either mud or baked clay. No rakes provided ; they'd be useless anyway. Worst cart paths ever, forcing detours that increase the bare spots. Range was closed "Today", which from the weeds looks like most days. Very scruffy appearance overall.
Get a Hot Deal, set expectations accordingly, and you'll have a decent time.
Cherokee Pines Golf and Fitness Club
Played On 5/20/2013Country, Country Club
Older course with some quirky holes. Smallish greens. Not too long, but reasonably challenging. Pretty well maintained. Friendly staff and many deals available.
Very Playable, Enjoyable Course
An relatively open course, but challenges comes from wind, water, cross bunkers on most holes, and undulations both on fairways and greens. Need to hit it tight to have a straight putt. Course is very well maintained and marked*. Got a great deal on GolfNow. Would recommend Crosswinds to anyone in the Savannah area. Aced #8!
Minor downsides: Water provided on cart (!), but no water or restrooms on course except at turn. Review the scorecard; *no yardages or charts on tee boxes. Great rates will bring out hackers, which can affect pace of play. Our threesome waited on EVERY shot behind two twosomes. Marshall and drink cart vanished on back nine.
Golden Bear Golf Club at Indigo Run
Played On 9/2/2012Clawed by the Bear
A very challenging course. Ball gobbling rough (watch your ball!), lots of water (often hidden), cross bunkers and trees that often make you shape your shots, fast greens. You must be accurate and fairly long off the tee to score here. Otherwise...
You need to play smart too. Get a yardage book. You really need to survey every hole before you play it. The tiny map on the scorecard isn't enough.
The PM fees are super. $29?! Wow. What a value for a Nicklaus course. Would love to try again now that I know the layout.
Minor quibble: Starter mentioned the beverage cart, but she breezed by us on #1 saying she was done for the day. In the Low Country humidity you need liquid, and the course coolers were undrinkable. Load up before and at the turn.
Old South Golf Links
Played On 9/1/2012Fun Yet Challenging
A well maintained course with an excellent start/warmup area. Course winds through the marshes on the back 9. Recommend playing at high tide though if you don't want to just be looking at mud. A couple tricky holes ("island" fairway) but keep it in play and you'll be okay. Recommended.
