About
I have had the great fortune of playing over 360 courses around the country, mainly in locations I have lived, New England, the Carolinas and Florida. I have also made golf trips to Arizona, Hawaii, Virginia, Alabama, California and New York. I spent time as a Tournament Director, putting on NCAA golf national championships in Central Florida as well as college invitationals with Notre Dame, St. John's and the Hooter's Matchplay. I worked the Tavistock Cup and the UCF Invitational at Isleworth as well. I have made friends for life on the golf course and for that I'm thankful to the game.
If I'm going to give a course five stars it better be on the level of Bethpage Black, Pinehurst #2, The Ocean Course at Kiawah, Harbour Town and Kapalua as those are the best I have played to date.

Tobacco Road Golf Club
Played On 05/31/2017Second time around was disappointing because of pace
As with the first time we played this course it really lived up to expectations once again when it comes to condition and of course the layout. Sadly our round was pretty much ruined by the pace of play, it took three hours to play the front nine and then sadly we had to walk off the course after 14 holes. We allotted five hours for this round just to be safe so we would have plenty of time to get to the airport in Raleigh for our flight home but as it turned out five hours was not going to be enough. On the 14th hole we were already approaching the five hour mark and there was no relief in sight as there were three groups On the short par four when we got there. I'm sure if you go and you don't get stuck like we did you'll enjoy your round there's this really is one of the most intriguing golf courses in the country but to see ranger sitting in the woods talking to each other while we were all backed up surely did not help the way we felt as we drove off the course. I'd still recommend this course to anyone who hasn't played it and I just hope you don't get stuck like we did
Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club
Played On 05/30/2017Second time was as good as the first
This course during our maiden trip to Pinehurst three years ago and this time around it was just as great as the first time. The course was in spectacular shape as usual and the layout is still one of my favorites in the Carolinas. You get a nice feel of this being a Donald Ross course by the waste areas in almost every fairway that gives you a subtle Pinehurst #2 look. The tee boxes, fairways and greens were all in spectacular shape and condition wise this course rivaled Pinehurst #8 which we played earlier in the week. There are so many reasons for you to play this course including condition, value and customer service that you really must put it on your itinerary when you're heading to Pinehurst. Make sure you stop in to the clubhouse and check out the bar area for some pretty cool artifacts as well
Pinehurst Resort & Country Club - No. 8
Played On 05/29/2017Truly spectacular, Fazio at his best
No surprise here, when you think of the top courses under the Pinehurst umbrella #8 belongs there. The layout by Fazio is truly phenomenal. From waste areas to false fronts and drop off areas on every green, Fazio makes you work for a decent score. We played it the day after the USGA four ball was there and the greens were running about 12's which made for a tough scoring day but it didn't take away from the great experience at all. This course does battle with #7 as the second best course in the Pinehurst resort family. Put this one on your list of must plays when your venture to the Sandhills.
Tot Hill Farm Golf Club
Played On 05/28/2017Great layout but that's about it
I went in thinking that this was going to be an experience like Tobacco Road and that was my first mistake, playing here was the second. Though I enjoyed what Strantz did with this course, the condition was fair at best, the "pro shop" was nothing to write home about as far as merchandise, the food was like a bad food truck. If you're staying in Pinehurst this course is really not worth the hour drive. After 3-4 holes we thought about jumping in the car, driving back to Pinehurst and getting a tee time at someplace like Mid Pines or Dormie. What a shame that a cool layout like this is not being taken care off by the staff at Tot Hill. Being someone who has been around golf courses for a lot of my life, if I had to guess, I'd say this course is either going up for sale or closing, the $29 greens fee was the first hint about that. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you how fun it was to be playing behind a SIXSOME on a Sunday during a holiday weekend. Yay for a 5+ hour round, if you want to play good Stantz courses stick with Tobacco Road and Caladonia.
Pinehurst Resort & Country Club - No. 9
Played On 05/27/2017Humps, humps everywhere
This is a typical Nicklaus course with hills all over the course forcing you to hit a lot of shots from lies that aren't flat. With scuttle evelation changes and optical illusions like bunkers in front of greens with 4-6 foot trees in them make it tough for you to feel comfortable over shots into the greens. He even makes you pay for hitting good tee shots on some holes, like 18, where I hit my tee shot left center in the fairway and ended up with the ball way above my feet as the fairway had a huge slope from left to right. The service was ok at #9, nothing to write home about. There is no snack area so you have to go wait st the bar to get anything, even a Powerade. The pace of play was not great as this was a five hour round and when we made the turn and headed to the 10th tee there were four groups on the hole, one on the green, one in the fairway and the we were the second group waiting on the tee. So, it wasn't the most enjoyable round for some of those reasons but I did enjoy the layout and the condition of the course.
Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University
Played On 05/26/2017What a blast, thanks Arnie
What a great time we had playing this course after our plane landed in Raleigh to start our Pinehurst vacation. The layout is spectacular with elevation changes that give you great views of the skyline of Raleigh and really nice landing areas that allow you to score on this course. The greens were splendid with great pace and they rolled true all day. Be smart with your distances as the elevation changes really do effect your distances. The staff was phenomenal including the folks in the restaurant who were really great to speak with. This was such a great experience for us, we will be back and we hardly every play the same course twice on vacations.
The Golf Club at Sacconnesset
Played On 05/17/2017Top notch Rees Jones design
Rees Jones really out did himself this fantastic layout on Cape Cod. From elevation changes to well-placed bunkers and tree-lined fairways on almost every hole this course is a true test of golf. The greens were a little slow but that's understandable for this time of year in New England but they did roll true. The only drawback to this course is that they do not have a driving range just an area where you can hit into a net. Other than that this was a fantastic golf experience especially the folks who work there who are absolutely fantastic. From the cart gentleman to the pro shop and our fantastic fore caddy everyone was just really great to deal with and really went out of their way to help a foursome that was there because they won an auction and not the members at this private course. If you get a chance to play this course I would highly recommend you do that you'll really enjoy the experience from the moment you get out of the car to the moment you put your clubs back in the car. I enjoyed the score so much that I actually looked into a membership after our round.
Pocasset Golf Club
Played On 05/08/2017Trouble, trouble everywhere
This was a brutal day at Pocasset, from 30-35 mph winds to 50 degree weather to brutal rough, this course was way too tough for the average golfer. The rough around the green was so thick that we could hardly get it out. Short-siding yourself on these greens was jail not only because of the rough but because of the undulating and very quick greens. The layout was a great Ross design but the trouble everywhere made for a tough day.
Woods Hole Golf Club
Played On 05/01/2017Truly spectacular
I had the opportunity to play Woods Hole during a tournament and it was one of the best decisions I ever made to play in the tournament. Woods Hole is the best course I've ever played in the state of Massachusetts from rolling fairways to elevation changes and perfect greens this was truly a great experience. The new large clubhouse only added to the experience and made for a perfect day of golf. If you can get on I would highly recommend this course to everyone as not only is the course spectacular but the views of the Woods Hole are equally amazing. This is what private golf in New England is all about
Rhode Island Country Club
Played On 04/18/2017Interesting layout that is both good and bad
This course was in fantastic condition for this time of year in New England and the greens really stood out as some of the best I have played in the area. The layout on the hand was tough to understand sometimes, especially the par 5's. One two of the 5's, a good tee shot left you with two kind of odd decisions to choose from, either lay up behind water which was about 100-120 years away of have to fly the water with your second shot which was about a 200-220 carry. The course is loaded with bunkers and a few well placed hazards. And lastly, the final four holes on the bay are fantastic with great views of the water. If you get the chance play this old, throwback New England course.
Pinehills Golf Club - Jones Course
Played On 04/17/2017One of the best golf destinations in New England
We have been to Pinehills several times over the years and neither course ever disappoints. The Jones course is a fantastic layout with elevation changes, bunkers everywhere and well-placed hazards. It looks like we played it about a week after the greens were aerated so they weren't the best but normally this is a fantastic place to play a round of golf. The practice facilities are top notch as are the pro shop and the restaurant. With a second course design by the Nicklaus group you really can't go wrong at Pinehills. If you're looking for truly great New England golf look no further than Pinehills in Plymouth, MA.
Shingle Creek Golf Club
Played On 04/03/2017Let down but hopeful for the future
With a 13 year break between the first time I played this course and this time I was really impressed with the new layout done by Arnold Palmer golf. Sadly I think I played it about a year to early because the conditions are still pretty rough. From spotty tee boxes to young fairways and greens that struggled some, the condition of this course has a ways to go. As for the new layout, it is really phenomenal and I think eventually it will become a must play on folks Orlando itineraries. Give it some time and I think you'll really enjoy playing Shingle Creek.
Celebration Golf Club
Played On 04/02/2017Water, water and more water.
There are hundreds of courses in this country that say there's water on the golf course but Celebration really uses the water features that they have. Here, water really is a hazard on almost every hole. With forced carries, water that runs the length of par fives and greenside ponds this course truly uses everything it has to test your game. As for condition everything from tee boxes to greens were in really great shape on this day. So when it comes to celebration bring your A game and maybe an extra sleeve of balls.
Trump National Golf Club
Played On 03/07/2017Truly spectacular
Coming in with high expectations since this course is ranked number 27 in the country by golf magazineon its top 100 courses you can play list Trump National even out did that lofty ranking. From the moment you walk in it's no surprise that you are at a Trump course, on the bag drop to the pro shop to even the young men who clean your clubs after your round everything here is first class. As for the course, don't be surprised by the yardages. Just because it's fairly short from most of the tees does not mean it's going to be an easy course. There are natural areas surrounding almost every hole which tighten up the fairways when you're looking down from the tees. Another thing that makes course difficult are the views, you could see the Pacific ocean from every single hole and it is truly breathtaking. The greens are typical Pete Dye with undulations everywhere and they are all well bunkered. This course is easily a top 10 on my list of the over 300 courses that are playing and if you get the chance you should play it as well. To save money check out TeeOff.com and see if you can get a discounted rate there as I saved almost 50% on the greens fees. Not that I do this very often, but if I was to return to the LA area I would certainly play this course again.
Angeles National Golf Club
Played On 03/06/2017One of the toughest Nicklaus courses you'll find
Don't let the title fool you, I had a great time playing this course. It is a true Nicklaus course with undulations on every green, false fronts on most and well placed bunkers everywhere. You are also playing in desertlike conditions with natural areas on every hole. There is also no out of bounds on the course, if you hit it into the natural areas you play it as a hazard and there is also woodchips on the sides of some holes that you get free drops from those areas. The fairways were hard and fast and the areas around every green are cut very close so sometimes your ball will end up no where near where it landed. This is a Top 25 toughest course I have ever played but it was still enjoyable because I played it smart thanks to the member I was paired up with who gave me a lot t of insight.
The Cape Club
Played On 11/18/2016Getting better and better
We played this course the weekend it opened this past summer and it was even better today. On a cool November day the course was in fantastic condition other than the greens being a little shaggy but with the course closing Sunday for the winter that is to be understood. I look forward to seeing the upgrades to the back nine to complete the course and make it even more fantastic. See you in the spring Cape Club.
Granite Links Golf Club At Quarry Hills - Milton Nine
Played On 11/03/2016One of the best public courses in the state
We were lucky in more than one way to catch a 70 degree day in New England in November. We also had the chance to play one of the best public courses in Massachusetts. Granite Links is a spectacular layout that includes elevation changes, well bunkered fairways and greens and slick, quick greens that have all the twists and turns off a Grand Prix street course. The fairways and tee boxes were in fantastic condition and the only negative thing I can say about Granite Links is how hard packed the green side bunkers were, they were like waste areas. I had been hesitant to play this course for a long time because of cost but we caught a GolfNow discount and I'm glad we did. This was a great way to start winding down the 2016 golf season in New England. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking for a scenic course that is a good test of your golf game.
Panther Lake at Orange County National
Played On 10/27/2016Can see why it's Q School worthy
Let me start by saying, what a fantastic course. Though we played the course after they overseeded it and it was cart path only, this was a great day of golf. Panther Lake is a challenging course that brings water, bunkers and tight lies around the greens to make you work for your pars. As most of you know, the practice area at OCN is second to none and the clubhouse is well stocked with everything you need. We played Panther Lake on a moderately windy day be that made for an even more challenging course so make sure, windy or not, you play from the correct tees for your game or it will be a very long day. Keep in mind that any holes on the course that seem short or easy off the tee will make you work on and around the greens. I would HIGHLY recommend both courses at OCN and Panther Lake is a true gem in Central Florida.
Bay Hill Club & Lodge - Championship Course
Played On 10/26/2016Other than snobby members this was a great experience
First off let me say that playing Bay Hill was a great experience, especially walking with a caddy. The course was fantastic and the staff was top notch. Sadly, there was a group of female member 3-4 groups ahead of us that fell almost four holes behind the group in front of them and when the ranger asked them to pick it up they told him to "put his big boy pants on and tell the non-members behind them to go eff themselves". But now back to reviewing the course because hopefully you won't get stuck behind a group like this if you come play Bay Hill. The two loops around water on the front and the back were amazing, number 6 is one of the best holes in golf and 17 and 18'with their water features and bunkers make for challenging holes. Other than the rediculously slow play we really enjoyed our time here and the course itself. It was a Top 10 experience for us and we will be back.
ChampionsGate Golf Club - International
Played On 10/24/2016Carry, carry and more carry
It was no surprise that we were going to have a great time at Championsgate Having played the National course and also hearing from friends who have played both I knew this was going to be a great time on the golf course. As for the course, there is a ton of carry and a lot of trouble on every hole. If you play from the right tees for you, you will have a fantastic time here. The fairways were in fantastic shape and the greens were firm and lightning fast, get it started and let it roll. Most of the greens were elevated and if you miss them you wil have some knee-knocking chips to get it close to the pins. The course is incredibly well bunkered both in the fairways and around the greens so be ready for that by using the cart gps to know your distances to them and over them. I would highly recommend this course to anyone heading to the Disney area of central Florida.
