Stonebridge Golf Club of New Orleans - Championship Course
Played On 04/19/2016Close to the heart of new orleans just wish the grass was greener
Gretna and Stonebridge was wonderful for location and price if you get to play the full championship track. Layout was good; it was fair and yet a few of the holes challenging especially playing from the back tees. Wish the grass hadn't been hit so hard by the weather as most of the course was brown. Greens were for the most part hard, fast (despite the rain) and brown. They hadn't recovered from fall/winter over seeding and aeration. Course levee construction prevented us from playing the back 9 so we had to play the executive course. I do have to say for an executive course it is better than what Illinois courses call executive it even had a par 5 and a couple par 4's. Alas that was also with three holes with temporary tees and or greens. Kind of a mess this one is worth the try once they get things back to normal.
Kissimmee Golf Club
Played On 12/13/2014Semi private golf course in as bad a shape as a muni
Our municipal courses here in Chicago have about the same mediocre course conditions are this semi private. At least here there is the excuse of lack of money in the budget. It is really a shame as Kissimmee has a uniqueness being right next to an executive airport. While this course was in the greenest shape of our trip we would have taken the brownish green mix over having torn up greens, unraked bunkers (lazy golfers ahead and possibly from last week) sand wasn't that typical soft fluffy Florida sand as some bunkers were packed hard-pan type sand. There were some challenging forced shots over water or pins tucked towards trouble but for the most part it was straight forward wack a ball golf. This day was packed a week in New orleans and a week in orlando every course was wide open except this one. We played hit and wait for most of the day up till the 14th then it finally opened up a bit. Stay clear and play stoneybrook or hunter's creek for cheaper courses or pop for the shingle creeks, and disney courses.
Stoneybrook East Golf Course
Played On 12/12/2014A few things better and this course could be a 5 star
The only thing in our opinion keeping this course from 5 stars were the fact that some of the rough blended in a bit with the fairway so either the fairways were shaggy on holes or the rough was tightly mowed. The other was the somewhat horrible condition of the greens. They looked torn up pretty bad and two were almost like compacted mud. That is just a shame too because they played so fast with subtle breaks that made then sometimes hard to read. Other golfers were very nice and let our twosome play thru their 3 and 4 somes. Not a bad time especially for a public course but some room for improvement.
Hunter's Creek Golf Club
Played On 12/10/2014Not too bad on vacation budget
We got out for $22 in town for a convention. Fairly convenient to the convention/ attractions area. Due to the colder than avg. weather some grass was a bit dormant greenswere in really nice shape. The sweetheart in the bar area was friendly when eating at the turn. Dogs were run of the mill but being from Chicago we could be harsher than most on the hotdogs. Water on many many holes a nice semi private feel bordering on private atmosphere. Able to golf fast and at our own pace and still played 18 in just under 3 hours time.
Indian Boundary Golf Course
Played On 10/26/2014Muni golf decent price
Wouldn't pay over $22 for this course. I grew up playing it and Edgebrook which Indian boundary has an advantage over. It's a beginner course which is why my wife and I played it. We were paired up with two other females one who was a beginner like my wife and the other played better so it worked out pace of play wise. Course was a bit busy but the time for the round was about average at a muni public. Many holes the rough wasn't a penalty so much an extension of the fairway. Only difference was the darker green for the rough lighter green for the fairways. Wish that Casper golf and the county would put some money into this course, chick evans and highland woods like they did with George dunne and joe louis. Course is convenient and on golf now is cheap enough that I wouldn't mind playing it more with some money/tlc pumped into the course to make it nicer for one and two make it a bit more challenging. Instead of a cheap quick last minute golf fix.
Glenwoodie Country Club
Played On 10/17/2014$13 for this course is a steal
This time through the course was sooo much better. Some rough was a bit shaggy so thinning but hey it's fall season. Tee boxes weren't torn up fairways were in nice shape for the time of year. Bunkers do need to be raked with the tractor and smoothed more often and those who play out of the bunkers need to rake them when done. Our cart also lasted us the whole round where as last time they didn't charge them enough and went through 3 carts. This time the weather for being overcast and a bit windy didn't really effect the course too much. In the spring it made the course play even harder especially on the uphill holes. Nice undulation on the greens but not so they are tour difficult either. Holes vary nicely in length and many test your skills a lot. They removed the stumps from trees they removed too bad they didn't replace them as with them it was a traditional layout without them it's a wide open parkland or a links style without burm and loads of sand. Glad to see them turn things around a bit for a better time out this fall and for $13-20 it's worth it over say coyote run or joe louis.
Coyote Run Golf Course
Played On 10/08/2014A bit overrated it seems
In my opinion the course was in nice shape. Greens are challenging but yet not too hard in regards to speed of the greens or in too much break. The hole layout though is quite a problem. Everything is so cramped and close together. Tee boxes are only steps sometimes from greens and just a 10 yards left or right mean the difference from being on the next or last hole instead of your own fairway/rough. I've never heard so many FORES on a course in my life. If some even do yell as I had one buzz my head four feet away with no warning in ear shot. Weather didn't help any as the temps were cooler and the wind was howling (12-17mph plus higher gusts) so bad that we watched it blow a flag stick out of the hole. The course doesn't really punish you even in the tree line you have a great line of sight and open windows to the greens. There is some water to clear/layup short of but nothing too difficult. I recommend everyone try it once and if you like it great if not that's great too. Paid $22 to golf but given the fall time frame could have played a better layout for the same or less money. Would return if it was cheaper but at $22+ I'd pass in the future unless it was my only option.
Kankakee Elks Country Club
Played On 10/01/2014Can see why it's almost 5 stars
This course isn't too much to look at but it is well cared for and there isn't anything really bad about the shape of the course. The greens when we played were tough. Subtle breaks and also huge sweeping slopes are what you are up against. They could have been playing a bit faster than normal as they were recently aerated and a bit dry. Our group, group not just an individual 3 putted most of the day. Fairways were narrow on some holes lots of the holes play uphill. Wish there was some sand bunkers that challenged you that was probably the only negative. Semi private club without the Tiger wannabe's. For $13 we all agreed we would be back again.
Burnham Woods Golf Course
Played On 09/26/2014It's a municipal course temper expectations
Even though my partner and I didn't shoot well on the course it was more just mechanics than difficulty of the course itself. If you are looking for a quick dirty cheap golf fix this is your place. They have a couple of longer par 5's but the layout is both quite user friendly and easy. Rough isn't a factor even the water hazards weren't really that bothersome. Just wish we could have shot better this day and it could have been a wonderful day but when you hit short and do a lot of slicing and hooking of the ball it makes for a longer more brutal day. Some tees weren't tees just mowed down circles in the grass, and I think leaf mulching could have been done at 6am not 11am when people are looking around in piles of leaves for balls. Manager on duty was nice/friendly and it was a slow day so no beverage cart.
Village Green Country Club
Played On 09/25/2014Relaxing good day of golf
Wish this course had the big money to make this a really nice course. Yes it's end of season but the Tee boxes were quite a bit bare, clover growing in rough and some fairways. Of course you always have the ignorant people that don't rake bunkers, replace divots and fix ball marks...what course doesn't no fault of the course. Yes it's for the most part easy on the beginners but even I got caught on a couple holes with double bogey but still escaped in the low 80's for the round. Signage could be better for some of the holes #2 especially or you can be playing wrong holes or aiming at the wrong green as the one par 3 you can see two greens one left one right...aim right. Weather beautiful mid 70's no clouds course wasn't crowded nice relaxing pace of play that only took just minutes over 3.5 hours playing with my beginner wife that's not too bad.
Arlington Lakes Golf Club
Played On 09/07/2014Hot weather lot's of 4somes equals long day
The weather was warm and the afternoon a bit humid. Pace of play was slow and bringing the wife along to play made it slower yet at it takes two shots to equal one of mine and then waiting for two other's to hit their balls made the day seem long. The course was a bit rough in spots not the worst I've seen but not the best condition either. You also have to also remember it is a muni. There isn't Ruffled Feather's money put into the course. The rough was a touch long the fairways nicely mowed. Water everywhere only found it once though. Greens were a bit challenging to read with subtle breaks but they break as expected toward the water away from hills/elevation. Everyone was nice and friendly. My best advice is go early and set the pace or later maybe even on a weekday as the weekends seem to be solid foursomes throughout the day.
Deer Creek Golf Club
Played On 07/23/2014Bit humid but for $10 for a course in nice condition can't complain
Started off playing bogey or better golf finished around 100 but not because of the course. Humidity was on the rise for the back nine but for the price it was great to be out there. We set our own pace and while it was a bit slower than we could have played we were paired up with another couple of golfers so we were 4 and let a single go through which put us back a bit but we didn't really care too much. Course could add a beverage person a bit earlier in the day but the one we got was great to look at and nice as well. Course is showing some signs of use and abuse this time of year and those playing could be nicer to the greens but the fairways and most of the greens were in very good shape and the tee boxes pristine for a public course with such low prices. Will be back again as long as they keep up the job they are doing.
Tuckaway Golf Course
Played On 07/03/2014great course and price nice time
$16 for a course that was in wonderful condition private club atmosphere couldn't ask for more. Would have been great if a beverage cart was around and the pro shop kid acted a bit more like he wanted to be there but was courteous. Great time with our for some.
Deer Creek Golf Club
Played On 06/13/2014Best course conditions all year slow play continues
This was the best maintained course (tees, greens and fairways) that I've played so far this year. Tees and greens were soft full and sponge like. Greens didn't roll true at all some looked like they would run 6 feet and the ball barely rolled three. Too soft maybe but they looked pretty and didn't have much effect on play. Layout wasn't too difficult other than the reads on the greens and the interesting lies in the rough. Some rough was lush and thick as thieves and others were bare with tree roots. Guess it depended on the hole and how close to a sprinkler the grass got. Pace of play needs to be picked up a bit as hit and then wait for three minutes with a group right behind you also waiting needs to stop. Let's bring the tradition of the Old course over the pond. Handicap cards anyone?
Fresh Meadow Golf Course
Played On 06/03/2014Slow rude and dry once past the proshop
Pro shop guy and beverage girl were nice and seemed happy to be there. Course itself other than being really, really dry wasn't too bad there were the spots of ground under repair and bare spots typical and easy to over look for a muni course. The real problem is when you tee off around 3pm and don't finish till after 7pm that things go sour. Not only was the pace slow as molasses we had four neanderthals in front of us with three carts so they had no reason to crowd around each others shots but did. In their minds eye they were Bubba, Kaymer, Westwood and Spieth unfortunately they could barely get it past the women's tees. Asked to play thru told oh there are two groups ahead so no. We are still waiting to see the invisible groups ahead. Then they got mad on 18 when they took 5 minutes to clear the green (after putting out and replacing the flag mind you) so we hit into them. They should have waited around (ya know what I mean) but for all the big talk they sure ran/drove out quick. Also at one point had 7 balls in our fairway of two players the other 5??? Also they pocketed my partners ball (but not the one when we hit into them go figure that one out) and a group behind picked mine up and that one was in play I had just teed off. Stay away or be one of the first one's out on this one.
The Meadows Golf Club of Blue Island
Played On 05/07/2014First time down and dirty fix
Played this course for $20 so the price was right the weather was great. Course was a little too open even for a links style course, need more bunkers and mounds to protect it. Tee boxes a bit bare but the rest of the course was is great condition. Rough was thick in spots and neatly trimmed in spots my friend played there before and said much of the tall grasses 6+inches were mowed down to 3inches making the course play easier than in the past. A good little course when you just gotta have a golf fix.
Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club
Played On 04/17/2014Go when this course is in peak condition
Went on a golfnow cheap rate and now we know why. Was made aware of the over seeding...not a problem just makes the greens slower than normal. Golf now only after we booked put a paragraph about the 5 temporary greens and when we got to the course it was up to 6. Temp. greens (especially with the damage this winter) are usually not that big of a deal either except the a-holes that played in the previous weeks still used the regular greens even though they were damaged so the temp greens had 6-10 divots and I mean deeep divots taken out that made them unacceptable. Fairways were still, despite the better weather the last two weeks, bare and dormant. This course would be better and looked better than it looked otherwise it would have been a 5 star experience all the way. So stay away in the off seasons and play in the summer.
Broken Arrow Golf Club - South/East
Played On 10/14/2013Broken Arrow
Played the easier (at least for me) North and then the South 9. Pace was a bit slow as they had a huge high school tourney at least on the south and word from the started was they were on pace for 5 1/2 hour round. Course was in nice shape for being fall in northern illinois. Staff was great and friendly as always have never seen a surly employee there. Course can be difficult playing the back tees especially with wind gusts. The other guy I was playing with never draws the ball but this day four shots drew due to the wind. All in all a decent deal through golf now or when they run good specials.
Chick Evans Golf Course
Played On 9/30/2013Easy Muni for very little money
Layout and holes/course are not that challenging for anyone more advanced than a beginner. It is a nice cheap course that isn't in too bad a shape for someone just starting out to get a feel for the game or a short track for practice. That's exactly what this trip was...a quick inexpensive practice trying out new balls. Thank heavens for Billy Casper golf because this course is 3 times better than it used to be under Todd Stroger's management yet the course need some more TLC and bunkers in it's design. Some grass repair/re-sodding but other than that if you go in with the understanding it's a municipal course for about 20 on Golfnow then you are good to go. If you think it's Doral Resort and Spa or even Pheasant Run or Saint Andrews (london,England or addison,IL ) then you'll be disappointed or should try Dunne or Joe Louis.
Eaglewood Resort & Spa
Played On 9/4/2013Great golf great conditons great time
Despite the greens being aerated which made them jumpy so you didn't get a true roll the course was in almost pristine condition. Not a bare spot in sight, the views were as one member of our group said looked like something you would see out on some of the tour events. Everything was in proper place and I imagine that's how it is every time out. Everyone enjoyed themselves and two of our foursome is planning a weekend golf stay because the course was so nice. The staff were also friendly and helpful. We all will be back.
