East at Grandover Resort
Played On 05/04/2019Great course...but not worth the price
Great layout. Definetely play the East course if you're wondering between East or West. Beautiful scenery. Challenging mounds and green undulations prevent you from scoring well. Greens are immaculate shape. Cart path and cart ride are top notch. Staff is best I've encountered in years.
Fairways...atrocious. They're trying...sod everywhere...but absolutely horrible "fairways". Hitting from hard pan dirt nearly every shot.
Worth playing just for scenery...absolutely not worth the "hot deal" of $60. This is a $40 course at current conditions. Don't pay this high price until the get the fairways back to what it was years ago.
Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech
Played On 11/09/2018Can't miss this place. Gotta play
Wow. That's the best way to describe this place. I don't like links style courses but this place is amazing. Water view on every hole. The two nines run alongside the river both ways. Every hole you get the large river view. Mountainside on the other view. Even if you don't like river view or mountainside view, the course is the best conditioned I've played all year. Like hitting off carpet.
Pete Dye did amazing with not only bunker placement but size and height.
Greens were no less amazing.
This place is pricey but well worth it once.
River Bend YMCA Golf Course
Played On 11/07/2018UNBEATABLE FOR A HOT DEAL PRICE
If you're in the area this course is a must play. The greens are better than any private club I've played on. Fairways were very hittable but just didn't look the part. Good lies, just doesn't have the plush look to it. If they would plant shubbery and make the course look better this could easily be a private course. Once again, best greens I've seen in years.
Black Mountain Golf Course
Played On 11/03/2018Worth it one time
Decent shape municipal. Greens are mostly great but fairways are lacking in many spots. Every shot is side hill lie. What makes this course worth playing are the mountain views. It's worth it once, but not twice.
Raleigh Golf Association
Played On 11/02/2018Great if your in the area
Great staff. Play is SLOW. Fairways don't look like much but you can get decent compression. Greens are good if they place the pin where there's bare spots.
King's Grant Golf & Country Club
Played On 10/02/2018Such a great layout....so bad condition
The layout here is amazing and is the only reason I enjoyed my round. This has to be in the top three layouts I've ever played. It also is the worst conditioned course I've ever played. Golf carts were great, but aside from the cart and layout..there is nothing good to say about this course. Whomever designed it, tall Carolina pine tree lined fairways, water placed in strategic spots, the drives and approaches are different are every hole...truly took the time to think about every shot instead of just slapping a course together.
In its hayday with great conditions I would have considered possible the funnest course I've ever played. This was my first time going there but that's how much potential the place has.
Unfourtanetly the conditions are so bad it's not worth the $12 I paid to play.
So dissapointed.

The 500 Club
Played On 08/17/2018Best greens around, need to mow the rough down
Tremendous value for the price point. Construction still going on but you won't even notice it. Great fairways, great greens. They need to mow the 4 inch rough down because you'll lose you're ball if you don't hit the fairway...but a lot of rain the past week is probably the reason for that.
Mooresville Golf Club
Played On 07/27/2018Must play, but clear up 5 hours
Popular place so expect slow play. Crowded no matter what day and time. Only clears off about 6pm on the front.
Must play. Still.considered a minicipal....but could easily be considered semi private. Conditions rival a private course. Good clubhouse but it doesn't have showers, weight room and other thins a private course has.
Great restaurant. Challenging layout. Par 3s are short. Greens are like glass. Has GPS on carts but are not accurate, about 20 yards off in most cases.
Wouldn't pay $45 but the hot deal of $25 is worth every penny.
Wolf Creek Golf Course
Played On 07/10/2018Not what I remember, but ok.
I first played this course in 2010 and remember it was one of the best conditioned I've seen. I told myself if I was ever back in Atlanta area I would play it again. I was disappointed at the conditions.
They used to have Zysoia grass but now went with standard fescue look. Wasn't bad. More like a slightly below average maintained, semi private club. Layout is good. Some of the tee boxes were moved up so I was hitting a gap wedge to 2 par 3's but it was fun hitting a 7 iron into a par 5 on my second shot. Does require working a slight draw or fade, but not too much. You can club down, layup and still do ok if you can't work the ball around.
$30 twilight rate is good price point. Don't pay more than that. Not worth it. Like I said, not a bad course. It just reminds you of a really good municipal or a slightly below average semi private. When I played it in 2010 I would have considered it a private club.
Cherokee Run Golf Club
Played On 07/09/2018Amazing Views, Amazingly challenging
Plenty of elevation changes. Best course conditions I've seen this summer of any course I've played. From mountain views to a granite rock hillslide that looks like molten lava from a volcano. This course has wonderful scenery.
Pro shop personnel warned me this course is more challenging than most, he wasn't kidding. You have to draw or fade with everything from a driver to a 9 iron. Two par fives make you think to try hit crush a drive 270 over trouble or hit a hybrid, then wood, then short iron in. Really great design of risk/reward. Greens were small but excellent shape. This course kicked me in the pants and I enjoyed it.
Rock Barn Golf and Spa - Jackson Course
Played On 07/02/2018Gotta play this place
I haven't reviewed this place in a while, but it is still my number one place to play. Get the twilight rate. They've went up in price since they've become mostly private. They have two courses, the Jones course is private.
Best conditions, great carts, great clubhouse. Only place I'd consistently pay $3 for a hot dog because they are that good. $8 for the salad/soup bar, but it's worth it.
Now driving range balls are included so you could spend whatever time you want before and after your round practicing if you wish.
As with all Tom Jackson designs, as long as you can drive it 250 yards you're going to have a Pitching Wedge or less into the green. No big draws or fades are needed. Some holes look like you need to...but you don't Every shot is straight.
If you in the area you have to play this course.
Myrtle Beach National Golf Club - King's North Course
Played On 06/16/2018Worth playing once or twice
Great layout. Makes you use all your clubs. Must be able to draw and fade your longer clubs but the short irons and wedges are straight in.
Greens a little smaller, typical of an Arnold Palmer design...target golf. Excellent course conditions. Good clubhouse and friendly staff. When you pull up you'll think "what's the fuss about this place" because it doesn't look like much. However the course itself is really good.
Challenging from the normal tee boxes you play but if you move up a box, club down off the tee you wont have to work as hard and may have a more enjoyable round.
Barefoot Resort & Golf - Love Course
Played On 06/13/2018Play on Wednesday only
Excellent conditions, great clubhouse. Play on the reduced Wednesday rates only though. At $65 it's not worth playing more than once.
Layout is great. Bigger fairways, medium size greens. Every spot on the fairway felt like hitting off carpet.
I've played all Barefoot courses, this one is the best conditioned. I thought the Norman course was the best risk/reward and most memorable, however the greens and fairways are in much better condition on the Love course. Not saying the others are bad, just saying you can tell Barefoot spends their time on the Love course when it comes to maintenance.
Palmetto at Myrtlewood Golf Club
Played On 06/08/2018Ok, not spectacular.
Staff was great. Starter really enjoyed his job and it showed. Course is okay. Nothing bad, nothing amazing about it. Worth about $30. Not challenging. Would be good for an afternoon just wanting to get some shots in.
Cedar Rock Country Club
Played On 03/31/2018Don't go right now.....wait
Staff is excellent. Layout is great. Conditions are horrendous right now. Not just green arification...theres no grass in fairway. Too good of a course to be like this. Hopefully it gets better soon.
Farmstead Golf Links
Played On 10/29/2017Great value for a hot deal
Placement of obstacles...not just traps but bushes, trees, etc. make this links course interesting to try to carry them or hit around. Greens are mostly flat..not much break. Neat incorporation of its chicken emblem throughout the course. I'm guessing this was a farm house at some point. Only par 6 I've ever played. Rained a couple inches night before yet course was still very playable. Open fairways as no houses on the course so you can be off some with your drives and still score well. $75 is way too much but for a hot deal you must play this course if you're in the area.
So much potential, so dissapointed
Wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. That's it. Terrible course conditions. Clubhouse hasn't been renovated since 1950. Used to be a personal residence. instead of taking out the bathtub in the bathroom they just covered it with plywood.
Stunning views which makes it worth playing once. The conditions will make you not go back.
Don't bother playing the front nine. you'll be so disapointed it'll ruin the rest of your round. Play the back side only.
Lakeshore Golf Course
Played On 08/05/2017Ok for a municipal
Greens are decent. Fairway and rest of course not so much. Hard pan. Many spots you have to move your ball to find grass. Interesting layout at times since you're playing around a lake. Driving range is a nice twist---hitting balls into the lake directly. Ok if you want something cheap.
Barefoot Resort & Golf - Norman Course
Played On 05/22/2017Save as much $ as you can
All the barefoot courses are great conditions. I choose Norman because it has 5 holes that run along the inland waterway. $74 is high for this place. Play on Wednesdays or late evening to get this $74 rate. No way would I pay over $100 to play these courses. I drove around and looked at the other courses. Norman was actually a more interesting layout. It actually makes you think about if you can carry bunkers, positioning and so forth. For a short time I actually felt like a pro deciding upon my tee shot placement, risk/reward of carrying shots over hazards, etc. The placement of the hazards are not such that you must hit the best shot of your life. Just your average swing but you must factor in wind, how are you hitting right now, etc....which makes it quite fun for a change.
Rock Barn Golf and Spa - Jackson Course
Played On 05/04/2017Worth every penny of a hot deal
This is one of the few courses worth driving out of your way to get to with a hot deal. This course is manicured like a PGA course. Layout is such that if you can drive it 250 yards you'll only have a wedge left. Can't miss this course. You've got to play it to believe it.
Please give us another shot. Tell staff that CB offered a round for cart fee only in exchange for a fresh review. Thanks
