Old course, old layout. but playable conditions.

This course was probably the bomb...in 1963....That being said. It is cheap to play. The conditions are playable. The greens are actually pretty good. Long hitters can flat out destroy this course. If you want a place for the challenge, views, service...etc, this isn't it! If you just want a place to play that won't drain your wallet...this is the place. I suggest you eat before you come to the course....No really.....!!!

RTJ Golf trail......Nuff Said

Another great stop on the RTJ! I almost wish I lived in Alabama...Just so I could play the trail every day. That's all I have to say about that! I found Magnolia Grove to be a little more forgiving than some of the other stops on the "Trail". Don't let that lull you into a false sense of security though. Anything less than quality shots and good course management will put some crooked numbers on your card.

Bring your "A" game

In keeping with the impeccable reputation that is the legacy of Robert Trent Jones, all three courses at Capitol Hill will present you with some of the best in golf. The courses are kept in tournament condition. These are not courses that you can just bomb a drive and over power the holes. You will need your "A" game and some prudent course management to score here. The RTJ golf trail has avid golfers plan their vacations here for a reason, The "Trail" is quite possibly the greatest trip in golf...period!

Some tricky holes, nice views, pretty good maintenance

This course has an interesting layout. There is a mix of easy to tough holes. A nice job of getting beauty out of the landscapes. Overall condition of the course was good. The greens are a little inconsistent in speed, but still manageable. The practice facility is OK, driving range is a bit of ride from the clubhouse and first tee, so make sure you are back in plenty of time for the starter. The course is busy and does play slow.

Very nice country club layout.... with teeth!!!

This course is well kept with very quick greens and well maintained fairways. Don't be fooled by the "Country Club" moniker. This layout has some teeth. It will bite you very quickly if you let your guard down. More often than not, "going for it" is not your best choice. There are a lot of VERY WELL placed hazards on the course. Play on the weekend is slow, the rangers watch and warn people for slow play....but don't seem to actually DO anything about it. Even as such, this a really good course.

Solid layout that demands good shot management

The course presents you with a number of challenging tee shots and hole lengths that will require you to really think about what shot you want to make. The greens are quick and sloping, but true in the roll. Overall condition of the course was quite good for winter. The high handicapper should definitely not bite off too much on this course. I would suggest that they play from a tee shorter than normal the first time. An added bonus is that several famous people are known to play the course (look at the autographs on the golf shop counter), so you never know who you will see.

Tough Palmer layout that is being brought back to it's former glory.

This was one of the toughest Palmer courses I have ever played. There are a large number of blind tee shots ( some border on the ridiculous, 18 in particular), forced carries and just plain nasty slopes in the greens. It is being brought back to it's former glory. The course was in serious disrepair a few years ago. New Tiff eagle greens have just been installed. Fairways are doing pretty well now. There are still a few spots on the edges getting work and a lot of the edge trees and bushes have recently been cleaned up.
The course will demand EVERY shot you have...just to survive it!! It was a vicious test of my abilities, but it was a welcome one. I immediately took the replay and took what I learned to my advantage. In other words...it is going to kick you in the teeth the first time you play it.

Challenging layout, in the middle of nowhere

This course was rates 4.5 stars by Golf Digest. A deserved rating on a challenging layout, with good conditions. However, the course is way out in the sticks. It is about a 40 mile drive to Macon. The fact that the locals said this is the best public course in the area...BY FAR. And my experience on other courses backs it up, is not good news for the golf tourism market in Macon.

This review must be on a course other than Crosswinds, which is near Savannah and thus 150 miles from Macon.

Yes, So sorry, Please ignore this review. I confused it with another course in Macon while on a 60 day cross country run involving over 50 courses. I am trying to figure out how to pull the review altogether and post a proper one. Actually, I found the course to be pretty reasonable on all fronts. Good conditions, decent layout and all was just fine with me......

Thank you for your kind feedback. I am confused though about your geographic reference of Crosswinds. We are located by the Savannah/Hilton Head airport off I-95, 10 minutes from downtown Savannah. I agree we are far from Macon, but look forward to seeing you in the future.

Very playable layout, good for couples

Overall, a decent course in good condition. The greens are starting to come apart though. The grass is getting a little sparse, making for bumpy putts that don't always hold the line. The starter did tell me that they intend to rehab the greens in June. The layout isn't too challenging, so it is good for couples and families. If you want a bigger challenge, the "Hidden Cypress" course at Sun Lakes is a lot tougher and in good shape.

Good layout, conditions and playability for all.

Gary Player designed a course that presents the better players with a good challenge, without being too penal for the less advanced. Course conditions are good. The greens are smooth and reasonable in speed (9-10). The fairways are well kept. Hazards are sparingly, but strategically placed. Overall a good course for all levels.

A Palmer classic. Tough and pristine

This course is simply top notch.. It bears all the marks of a classic Palmer signature course. Shot placement is critical. it is not enough just to hit the fairway or green. Slopes, well placed hazards and dangerous greens bring bogey into play for being out of position. The greens are sloping and fast, but fair. The fairways and bunkers are perfect. Bring your "A" game. Even at full price this time of year, it is a must play. I have seen many much higher priced courses that weren't as worthy a play as this.

Challenging layout, good conditions

Even in winter conditions, after a LOT of rain, this course was in great shape. Tough layout with a few blind shots and tricky fairways and greens. This course gets plenty of well deserved compliments.

A little disappointing for a Nicklaus course

I'm sorry, but I just can't believe this course was designed by Jack Nicklaus. There is nothing all that great about the layout. It just doesn't carry any of his hallmark design features, except maybe the sloping of the greens. Conditioning for winter was also not what I would expect. The greens were choppy. The fairways were dormant but playable, however they do have multiple types of grass on them. Overall, a reasonable course, but not at full price.

Straight forward layout, good for tourists

This course is well maintained, nothing real special on the layout, but ok. The island itself has a few things to look at before or after the round, so it makes a good tourist course. The site has 3 courses total. The Oleander course is the more desirable of the 3. The price on the courses was reasonable, so overall not a bad choice.

Very nice conditions and a good layout.

The course is built on the edge of a river/ bog that really gives it a lot of great natural features. Some holes have natural waterways running right up and around them. There are plenty of different looks to the vegetation around the course. With large, old trees, palms and sawgrass mixed through the area, it made for some very nice looking holes. The layout is not too challenging, but let that lull you into a false sense of security. Conditions were tournament quality. The negatives for the course were with the staff. The golf shop attendant was somewhat dismissive. The woman running the grill was much more interested in what was going on with her phone than she was with making decent food. (gave me food poisoning BTW, and All I got was a very lame ...."sorry" out of it. ) So I wouldn't suggest the grill as a dining option. The pricey sandwiches only come with a small bag of chips anyway.

Nice Palmer layout, solid challenge

The course has a solid challenge in the layout. There are more than a few tricky things going on here. Blind shots with trouble, visual tricks on the tee, hidden slopes and hazards. What else would you expect from " The King" There were a number of good views on the course. I do have a couple of problems the course though. First, the greens are not in the best shape, they have numerous marks, bumps, etc that need to be fixed. Second, if you are going to hype your descriptions of the course. You should overseed the fairways or at least keep them watered in the winter months. The fairways were very dry and hard. They looked and played more like a muni course. I'm sure they are really nice in the spring and all, but I'm sure Arnie would not approve of your winter conditions. i gave the course 4 stars for the layout and the knowledge that better conditions will appeal in the spring. As for winter, you can definitely take a star off that.

Tournament quality course

The course is kept in beautiful condition. Smooth greens, solid challenge, but fair layout. It is a "tourist" course, so expect some slow play. The beauty and tranquility of the course help alleviate that though. Since the course sits on the grounds of the World Golf Hall of Fame, I would suggest planning on arriving early or allowing time after your round to take the tour of the facility.

Solid layout with good conditions.

Mark McCumber has designed a winner here. This course is very well kept. The layout is very solid and will present you with a number of key decisions to make in course management. A well placed shot is rewarded fairly. A poorly made decision is punished sternly. There are a few holes that require some local knowledge, but in general, prudence will pay it's dividend. For all of the challenges you will face, the novice golfer will still find this course to be a great play from the forward tees. I wish I had the time to go back and play this one again.

Solid test of golf with some nice scenery.

This course has some nice looking holes along the marina and waterways of the community. Obviously a lot of water is on the course. Quite a bit of it is in play. The course has a number of holes that require local knowledge to avoid unseen trouble. The greens were true and fast. The course is well maintained and I'm sure is just gorgeous in the spring and summer when the fairways liven back up. I have one really big issue with the course however, Everything is very poorly marked. There are no signs directing you to the next tee. I found myself lost MANY times as I tried to navigate from hole to hole through the community....LOCAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED just to find the next tee. Distance marks on the course were not much better. That being said, it is still a really good course that was a solid value for the play.

A nice layout with scenic holes, but needs work.

This is yet another course that I came to after seeing high reviews from other players. This course also does not overseed for winter. Their greens however were in a state of chaos, there are a lot of bumps in these fast greens. They are also spraying some kind of fertilizer that is unduly changing the smoothness and speed of the surface.Coupled with the uneven grass, it makes reading a putt difficult, if not impossible. The layout was better than average and a few of the holes are nicely scenic. The course however is currently not living up to it's hype.
