Another elevated green at Beacon Ridge. Photo submitted by JasonDeeganGA on 12/27/2013
Beacon Ridge
Well laid out course. Some difficult holes. Plenty of character. Course was in good shape.
Coures is in very good shape.
The only complaint I would have is that there were no water stations or beverage cart out on the course during a hot day.
course in excellent shape
fairways were immaculate, greens were like kitchen floor for the price I paid that's was a steal I am going back as soon as I can pace of play was great I have no complaints at all
Super nice course!
Nice condition even with the hot weather we have had. The greens were fast and the flags were set in some difficult spots.
Expected from from a 4 star rating
Was expecting more from a 4 star course. Clubhouse and pool in need of repair and paint. Personally, too many elevated greens and green bunkering for me. Greens multi-colored, hard to read, not receptive enough and super fast. Glad I played it but won't return.
Best shape that I have seen it in.
The course is not my favorite layout because it is not very long and when it is dry it is difficult to hold anything, even a fairway. With the wet conditions it played longer and the ball held everywhere. It was much more playable and in tremendous shape. It was like playing a different golf course and I enjoyed it very much. Plus I beat my nephew who hits the ball a mile!
Unimpressive
I've lived in the Sandhills for 18 years, and played every course except Pinehurst #2 and #7. All the golfers that live in the area consider Beacon Ridge to be the "worst" course in the Sandhills. The course is bland and boring and has no redeeming qualities. It was very poorly designed--who IS Gene Hamm?! He's NOT renowned!! Its always a ghost town course--nobody on the course and nobody in the clubhouse/pro shop.
The last time I played there, I stood at the sign-in desk for 15 minutes because the pro shop staff was nowhere to be found. Play ANYWHERE else for a more enjoyable round--this course is dull and boring. UNLESS you're in a hurry and just want to practice your swing, because the good part about this place is that you'll never get caught behind other golfers. You'll always be the only one out there. Sometimes its nice to be the only one on the course---I played 18 holes here in 3 hours! Never saw another golfer!
Nice shape and fun to play
Good course with very nice practice areas. Nice greens fun to putt.
Great prices through Golfnow.
This is probably the best course for the money. I used Golfnow.com and got a great price. The course was in great shape because of all the rain, maybe a little too wet. I highly recommend Beacon Ridge.
Poor Conditions, only 9 holes open, & they were aerated & sanded
My son and I were on vacation, and chose Beacon Ridge because it was suppose to be a very good course. Only the front 9 was open, because they were working on the back side. The front side had been aerated and sanded and we had to play the front two times. This was not what we expected
and did not enjoy the round.
Course is tough but fair !
Played this course many times & never get tired of it !
Course is in good shape & staff is very kind.
Has driving range & chipping area which is good to warm up with !!
Challenging 18 with tight tree lined fairways with many uphill shots to greens. Back 9 much more enjoyable than front.
Fairly tight fairways tree lined on both sides. Several bind shots so can be challenging for first round. Front 9 has many uphill shots to green. Back 9 more traditional and enjoyable. Conditions in late April was average ... Several fairways had brown spots ... Perhaps not recovered from winter season. Greens rolled well. Clubhouse staff was very friendly but not much of any stock. He said it was end of season close out ... But it was late April.
Outstanding Course
Excellent course. I really enjoyed the elevated greens and the views surrounding the course. Will definitely play this course again!
great course for the money only 15 min from Pinehurst
Very friendly staff to start. Played in March everything dorment but greens were great but a little tricky. Short drive from pinehurst and will add it to our stop every spring. Great value with Golf Now hot sale. Somewhat challenging, but very straight forward and can score on some holes. Not super long and even for us longer hitters there are a couple of reachable par 4's and got to a lot of par 5's in two. Seemed like a lot of bunkers surrounding all greens. No gimiks just great course.
This course deserves respect
Beacon Ridge has several holes to challenge your golf skills, and some that will allow you to score. Elevation changes and water will ensure that you choose the correct club and make a solid shot so as to eliminate those bigger numbers on your card.
A very enjoyable course to play
The Clubhouse impresses immediately. The Pro Shop staff was friendly and helpful. The golf cart was in good shape, no GPS but the course has yardage marked on the sprinklers. Very few holes where you were restricted to cartpaths (par 3's). The first hole is a great starting par 5 that gives a good first impression. The par 4's are not long but because the course is a bit hilly the second shots play a little long and require extra club but there are four sets of tees so you can pick your yardage. On course facilities are porta-potties on both nines. Houses are scattered throughout the course but they do not come into play. The fairways are quite wide with bunkers strategically placed but not too abundant. and there is water only on a few holes Many of the greens were a little small with a fair but of undulation but they all ran pretty quick. My spouse and I both enjoyed playing this course.
Who is Gene Hamm? I find it hard to believe that you have lived in the Pinehurst/Southern Pines area and have not heard of Gene. The majority of the 60 golf courses that he designed over his career were built in the Carolinas. Many of the courses that he built were also built for less than $500K. So he didn't build the high profile, even higher green fee type of courses, that have to charge over $100/round to pay the tour pro who is lending his name to the course, for a substantial fee. Spend a little time researching golf architects, especially from the 1950's and 60's and I'm sure you'll see Gene's name mentioned
