Poor condition, no club house
The course is in poor condition and the "country club" has seen much better days. A long time ago.
Post lockdown golf
The courses in uk have all been closed for 3+ months, so a game of golf was looked forward to. What a shame we chose Gatton Manor.
A nice friendly welcome by the girl behind the desk, so a positive start. We went to the first tee and we was on a mat. All 18 tees had mats and you wasn’t allowed to play from the tee. Upon reaching the green it was bumpy and not well kept. All 18 greens were the same.
So having 3+ months to prepare a golf course wasn’t used wisely. I suspect all staff had been furloughed but you need keep up a good level of maintenance on the golf course.
We won’t be going back. I won’t be recommending this course to others and the golf weekend with cousins - we’ll go elsewhere !!
Busy but it's great to be back
The slope rating tells the story that this course is more difficult than many. Generally narrow fairways and plenty of trees. So soon after the end of lockdown, it was, of course, very busy.
Off mats
Played this course many times. It is in a great location but I would give it some time to get over the lockdown break as they are playing catch up with maintenance and we were using tee mats still
Gatton Manor 31/3/21
Arrived this morning with high hopes having assumed some recovery time for the course over recent months would have stood it in good stead. Nope! Upon checking in we were notified that we should be playing off rock hard mats on all 18 over holes. You couldn’t even get you tee in the mat which looked like they had been borrowed from the driving range. Obviously had we been informed upon booking we could have made the decision to still play but disgusting 0, literally not 1, tee box was ready and prepared for a return to golf. One assumes the course opened on Monday as it was left when it closed. Greens long and bumpy - fairways more like rough. Pace of play was ok considering you had back to back 4 balls. Half way house closed and no drinks buggy on a scorching day. All in all a very poorly kept course with no pride taken at all which is a shame as it is a good test & interesting layout.
Poor condition, but has potential.
First impressions of the club itself (clubhouse, putting green etc.) were very tired looking and needs investment.
Similar to previous reviews, greens were in poor condition, bunkers have been completely neglected and tee boxes were messy. On the upside, the fairways were in decent condition and there was shape and definition between them and the rough.
If this course gets some investment and much needed TLC, it will be a pleasure to play. It certainly has character and potential, but not at the moment.
Shambles
Paid £40 for a round and was told before we tee’d off that the back 9 holes were not in use but we can go around twice. No problem with that these things happen but when we finished the front 9 and returned to the start there were around 15 people waiting to tee off so we could not just continue. Ended up walking off because didn’t want to wait an hour before we could tee off again. No emails to warn us of a problem with the back 9 holes when I was booking the round and no email from the club either. Poor service and will not be using the app in the future.
Soaking coarse
I know it’s a tricky time of year but £40 to play two front 9s because the back 9 is closed due to flooding is pushing it a bit. Particularly as we had no idea until we arrived.
We abandoned second 9 as there was a queue on first tee predictably.
The course was absolutely saturated and should be closed to dry out. The fairways were like swamps too.
Slow and boggy
We booked a two-ball through Golf Now. When we turned up, they said golf bookings through this app mean we get paired with a random two-ball. In fairness they were malleable and let us go out on our own. But still, not great.
Also, we were stuck behind a society who were slower than is fair on other players. And no effort was made by the club to speed them up.
As for the course, it’s not a winter course. Total bog with not a single proper tee-box and slip-sliding through every fairway.
All in all, not at all as good as hoped. In fact, much worse.
Needs investment to bring it into the 21st century
Overall a run of the mill hotel course in need of an upgrade. Played off the winter tees which looked better than the very tired looking main tees. Drainage poor on the fairways, greens a bit lumpy and inconsistent and most holes run of the mill. Facilities look neglected and the whole place looks like it could use some major investment to do the setting and the potential of the estate justice. Worth playing off season for a discount with the more forgiving winter rules. Staff were all very welcoming and deserve better surroundings.
Lovely challenging course but too wet
It was too wet to play course properly. As a social round we had fun and enjoyed the round but opening in such conditions could cause a lot of remedial work when things dry out. It’s a lovely course and it would be a shame to put it under pressure with all the rain we have had
A course which would play better in dry conditions. Greens were good, but after so much rain the fairways were very wet and muddy and mats were used on all holes instead of the regular tees.
