Bayonet golf course at Bayonet/Black Horse: One tough challenge on California's Monterey Peninsula

SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Bayonet Course at Bayonet/Black Horse will pull on your heart strings with great views of Monterey Bay, then stab you in the heart by burying your scorecard in bogeys.

Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse is the biggest bully on the Monterey Peninsula other than the infamous Spyglass Hill Golf Course. When Gene Bates redesigned the old Fort Ord military courses in 2008, he kept the fairways tight at Bayonet, all framed with towering Monterey Pines ready to knock down any tee shot off-line. Big, bold bunkering protects a slew of elevated greens. Holes 11-15 are known as "combat corner," highlighted by a couple of vicious dogleg lefts. Bayonet challenged the best PGA Professionals in the country at the 2012 PGA National Championship and 2015 PGA Senior National Championship.

It's also known as one of the best values in golf's most expensive destination. Golf Channel travel guru Matt Ginella recently named the 7,104-yard course No. 48 on his list of the Top 50 Public Courses in the U.S. (Click here.)

Golf Advisor user Tourpro1 gave it five stars in his review, writing, "On a less than stellar (weather) day, this course played true and fair. Each hole is its own, each shot a challenge. Played from the appropriate tee, this jewel can be enjoyed by all.
