About

I have had the great fortune of playing over 360 courses around the country, mainly in locations I have lived, New England, the Carolinas and Florida. I have also made golf trips to Arizona, Hawaii, Virginia, Alabama, California and New York. I spent time as a Tournament Director, putting on NCAA golf national championships in Central Florida as well as college invitationals with Notre Dame, St. John's and the Hooter's Matchplay. I worked the Tavistock Cup and the UCF Invitational at Isleworth as well. I have made friends for life on the golf course and for that I'm thankful to the game.
If I'm going to give a course five stars it better be on the level of Bethpage Black, Pinehurst #2, The Ocean Course at Kiawah, Harbour Town and Kapalua as those are the best I have played to date.

Very scenic front nine and great condition

The Boulders South course is a tale of two nines when it comes the scenic value. The front nine is pretty stunning and lives up to its name with boulders all over the course. One of the most impressive views the the first green where you will see an amphitheater of boulders behind the green. The back nine is a little more pedestrian but still somewhat scenic. The course was in incredible condition but sadly it was carry path only. The practice facility was excellent as was the pro shop and restaurant. Playing this course from the correct tees will lead to a fun round as it is fairly forgiving. Hit it where the course tells you to and you’ll have a great time.

What a gem

I had the opportunity to play Tedesco in a tournament and what a treat it was to play. The conditions were fantastic from the tee boxes to the lush fairways and all of the greens ran true. The layout is pretty amazing as well, from the first tee box which is right behind the clubhouse and is elevated about 15-20 feet above the fairway. The second hole has one of the most unique green complexes i have ever seen as it is surrounded by a rock ledge on three sides. The staff was spectacular, which isn't always the case when outsiders invade a private course. If you have a chance to play Tedesco I would recommend you do, we rank it as the second best course we have played in the state and we have played over 90 courses here.Pay special attention to the 12th hole, it is the only hole on the course that was designed by Donald Ross, it's a short, tough hole.

A scenic hidden gem

Amazingly I had never heard of this course until two weeks ago when it was recommended to me on Twitter. A little north of Worcester this course is worth the drive from anywhere in the state. The layout is fantastic and varied. With elevation changes, forced carries and even a silo on the course this is truly a hidden gem. They had just punched the greens but that did it matter as the rest of the course was in amazing condition. Go play it, we will certainly be going back.

A new nine and and old one for me

I used to live in Florence and played the original 18 often. They were just in the planning stages for the woodlands 9 when I moved away and was never able to play it. All I can say is, what a shame that I had to wait this long to play the woodlands. Meandering through the woods this course layout is really fantastic. The best part of the layout is that they have several teeing options to make it fair for average golfers and really tough for low handicappers. With water features and some tight fairways this 9 is a true test of golf. Then there is the second none, one of the originals that I have played often in the past. A fun layout with direction changes everywhere to make you use every club in your bag.

The premier course in Florence

This was my first time playing FCC and what a shame that I never got to play it sooner. The layout is really fantastic with elevation changes, well-placed bunkers and interesting bends to some holes to keep you in line. They course had some work done to it recently but I’m sure when it heals it must be a top notch course condition wise as well. The staff was very friendly and it has a nice practice area. Amazing that they put a course this nice right in the middles of a city. Well done FCC.

Good layout but conditions were ummm interesting

I had very high expectations coming into this round as I had heard a lot of good things about Indian Pond. The layout did not let me down, a lot of elevation changes, well placed bunkers and tightish fairways. The issue I had here was with the conditions and the greens. The bunkers were pebble filled and very firm and the greens were almost unplayable due to speed. To give you an example of how they were, a playing partner had a 10 foot uphill putt that he left short by inches and had the ball roll back to him ten feet from the hole TWICE. To me this is kind of goofy golf when you have greens like this. And imagine that they had 4-5 inches of rain the night before. Imagine if they didn’t have that water. Again, the layout is fantastic but the conditions were a little rough.

What can I say...always phenomenal

If you follow me on twitter or you have just seen my previous reviews on GolfAdvisor you know how I feel about the Jones course at Pinehills. Both of the courses at this property are two of the best public courses in Massachusetts. The Jones course is an interesting layout , it is tighter than Nicklaus and far more demanding off the tees. Once again the course was in excellent condition from tee to green. The greens were very consistent and they held as well. You can’t go wrong with either course at Pinehills but if you want a bit of a tougher test then Jones is the course for you.

I said I'd be back

As you can see in the review I did last year for Agawam Hunt I said I'd be back and this was the day. My buddy and I are playing in a fourball tournament here in mid-July and I told he that he needs to play the course before the tournament. Once again Agawam Hunt did not disappoint. The layout is really fantastic and constantly changing. The course on one side of the street is totally different than the other. On the clubhouse side you don't see a ton of elevation changes and the course is a little tighter than the other side and has a lot more water. When you cross over, I believe it is after the seventh hole, you will see vast elevation changes and a much more open course. The great equalizers at Agawam Hunt are the very quick greens and the fescue that lines every hole. If you get the chance to play here take it, this is one of the best Ross layouts I have played and my playing partner was really happy that he got the chance to see the layout before we play it for real next month.

One of the better courses on the island

I can’t say enough good things about this facility. The pro shop was well stocked, the range was in good shape and the service was excellent. On to the course, the layout was one of the best Hills courses I have played. It is a true resort course, set up to get people around quickly with generous landing areas and large greens. It also had some shots that will test your game, especially some of the approach shots. I really enjoyed this course a lot and would play it again.

A fair course for all levels of golfer

We played this course about 5 days after they aerated it so we didn’t get a true feel for it. The layout was fine and IMO it would be good for the average golfer. Some water can make approach shots interesting but for the most part the course is very straightforward.

Scenery everywhere

What a layout, not only is the course amazing, thanks Jack, but the views are as well. The Manhattan skyline and the Whitestone bridge will give you views you won’t soon forget. As for the course it is treeless and has one or two holes with water but the intimidation comes from missing the fairways and the bunkers. The greens are large but have some subtle undulations that make them tricky. I would highly recommend you play this course if you are in the New York City area.

Still one of the best in the state

This is my second time playing Woods Hole in a tournament and it is even better in May than it was during April the last time I played. We did have to battle some heavy winds but the course was in amazing condition. A truly unique layout that meanders over hills and valleys with some views of the water that will leave you breathless. The greens were in perfect condition and they all rolled true and at the same pace throughout the round.

One of the best public courses in the state

Pinehills never disappoints. Both courses are two of the best in the region and I would recommend you play both if you can. the Jones course has a great layout with several elevation changes. It is also a fair course with decent sized landing areas from the tee and some larger greens when you will need to be pin hunting to have a chance at birdie. .

Never Disappointing

It is a rite of passage that we start the golf season here. We were so happy to hear that nothing had changed as there was talk of houses being built in place of the driving range but we got through another year. The course is a great layout by Hale Irwin, with elevation changes, forced carries and several blind shots, this is a true test of golf. I would recommend this course to anyone playing in the area. The most fun thing about the course is the par 3's, from boulders hiding the pin to double greens to forced carries, every tee shot is an adventure.

Enjoyed the course but not the pace

Whenever we plan a Pinehurst golf trip we always play a course near Raleigh before heading for the airport. Since we had already played Duke and Lonnie Poole, Finley was the obvious choice for this year's trip. Layout-wise we really enjoyed the course, the use of water and bunkers made for a challenging day on the course but not so much that we wanted to throw our clubs in the water. The greens were quick and ran true which is all you can ask for. the only drawback was we were caught behind two ridiculously slow groups that forced us to skip two holes to get by them and finish the round. S on w that we have finished the Raleigh college course trifecta we can move on to other parts of the country. Lastly, the staff at UNC was spectacular from the starter to the restaurant folks, everyone was really top notch.

A true test of golf

I had played Pinehurst #2 after the redesign in the 90's when it had rough and now playing with the Coore Crenshaw redesign it made for a true test of my game. Honestly, the fairways are not that tight so you can hit driver off of most tees with knocking your knees together too much. The test is when you hit it into the waste area, when you miss the greens and putting on lighting fast surfaces. It was great to have a caddie, he really helped with the reads. The problem for me was, coming from the northeast, I am not used to putting from 10-15 feet off of greens. Most courses in New England have rough around the greens that you can chip from but everything at Pinehurst #2 is shaved and the greens are all elevated. My lack of knowing how to play those putts made for some sub-par scores on holes I played well to that point. You should play this course if you get the chance, even at the $500 all in price point.

A hidden gem in the Pinehurst area

For some reason I ha e always wanted to play this course and on our forth time to Pinehurst we finally did and we were glad we did. The course was in really great condition even though they had recently aerated the greens. Even though there was a lot of out of bounds on the course the fairways are fairly wide and it’s more of a shot makers course than anything else. The staff in the clubhouse was fantastic as was the gentleman who lead us to the first tee. With several bunkers to contend with off the tee you really have to be smart about every shot you hit on this course. I would highly recommend it to anyone going to the Pinehurst area as an alternative to the extremely expensive courses.

Played this course for the second time which is something we rarely do on vacation

The Dormie Club is a course we felt we needed to play a second time since the first time we played it two years ago was the day after a tropical storm headed to The area. And boy are we glad we did, other than the recently aerated greens the course was real,y great to play. The layout here is really fantastic and a lot of the shots that you can make a pretty fair, especially after two. The greens were undulating and you really have to think your way around every green. As some of you know this course is going private in a year to a year and a half and I would highly recommend you get to it before it does. This should be on every itinerary when you’re going to the Pinehurst area.

One of the more enjoyable Ross courses

I really enjoyed playing Agawam Hunt. The layout was fantastic and the staff was really great. I will admit it was the first time I had to go THROUGH a garage to get from one hole to the next though. The course features elevated greens, well placed bunkers and some tricky grass features as well as a creek the sneaks up on you from time to time. I will definitely be back.

In the words of Charles Barkley “Turrible just turrible”

What a shame that this course is what it is now. The fairways were completely gone and the tee boxes were pretty bad as well. At least the greens were in pretty good shape. It was also a 5 1/2 round which is just unacceptable. I will say that the cart girl was great, she got to us about 6 times which was nice on a warm day. I hope they can get Maplegate back in shape but for now I wouldn’t play it again.
