Rating 69.7

Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2022.

Established in 1908, the Great Southern Golf Club overlooks the Gulf of Mexico as the oldest golf course in Mississippi. That helps explain the course's peculiar greens.

In 1999, Great Southern Golf Club was renovated by Brian Curly, who took pains to keep Ross' square greens and still satisfy the USGA's specifications. The greens are minuscule, undulating and hump-backed with deep swales in the middle of some and wild, unexpected slopes in others.

No. 6, for example, is a 250-yard par-4, which appears easy enough, but there are big oaks on both sides of the fairways, a small, elevated green that slopes sharply left to right and bunkers left, front and behind.

Great Southern Golf Club measures 6,278 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 117 and a 69.7 USGA rating. The course features three sets of tees for different skill levels.

Good Course - Lots of History

I liked this course. It is winter, so it plays like a winter course. The fairways had grass and the greens were mowed and fast. For the money, it was great. Great views and wonderful customer service.

Classic Course/ Great Vaue!

This is a nice classic layout, wide fairways. The greens were a bit slow today but did roll pretty good. The three par 5s on the back side will shift your focus from the relatively predictable front side. Overall a nice course to get in a quick round on the Gulfcoast.

This course is a nice comfortable 4 hours

The course was not in the greatest in shape but good enough to enjoy a round. A few holes were very interesting with the location of trees from the tee box. All in all an enjoyable place for the average hacker.

Best value!

Feat course at a great price! Some areas could be drained better, but, it's a fun, quick course that's kept in better condition than most public courses in the area, that cost less than $40.

Poor greens.

Fairways were nice. Greens needed repairs. Water available on the course at only one hole. Bathrooms open at only one. Other bathrooms on course locked. Sand traps were like dried out mud holes.

Rude / greens

Dealt with 2 people. Both were very argumentative for no reason when we walked in he was arguing with a member not honoring his agreement. Greens were possibly worst I have ever played. Wouldn't hurt my feelings if I never played this course again.

Disappointed

2 years ago I would have claimed best value on the locoast, but since David Lee left the course has gone to the dogs. We only played there cause we got a $15 rate on Golfnow. Fairways and bunkers are okay but the greens are horrible and with summer approaching there will be no way to recover them. If this course wants any play at all, they should be charging about $12. Can't believe the membership is not going hysterical over these conditions. What a shame course could have so much character.

Worst course in Biloxi

Staff was very friendly but that's all this course has going for them. The greens are the worst I've seen in my 15 years of playing the game. Greens were nothing but sand and half the course looks like it's been under construction for 5 or more years. You go through a gate across the railroad tracks to get to the back nine which were in worse condition than the front. I will never play here again. Their normal rate on GolfNow is 40 dollars! How do they stay in business? I can go play lots of other courses in the area for that amount of money! It might have been a great course before Katrina but it appears to still be recovering some 10 years later. Save your money and go hit a few at Dicks sporting goods on their machine if you need to practice your game. You'll be happier with the experience

Fun and a little challenging

The course was fun and challenging. Some of the par 4s were a bit longer than ones that I am use to play on. They had just dusted the greens the day before so the ball was not rolling straight for my putts. Took me 2 1/2 hours to play 18 holes which was good. There was plenty of cold water jugs out there for the golfers.

Worst greens ever

Valuable lesson I learned with this round- always find out what kind of shape the greens are in before you sign up to play. Even though the reviews on this course were good overall, there was no warning about the shape of the greens, which were horrible- half of the green surface on many holes were dirt! No grass at all. And where there was grass, it was spotty, very poor shape- a 2 footer was a true test.
The staff was nice, the facilities were fine, if it were not for the greens it would have been a good experience.

Terrible course conditions

Got a golf now tee time for $15 so tough to complain too much, but things need to be said. Started off on the putting green which was a about a 8 x 15 ft square in terrible shape which would indicate the quality of the greens. The fairways were patchy and hardly had an resembleness of a fairway, tough to tell you were in a fairway at all. All of the greens were insanely sandy and I would wager that there was more sand on the greens than actual grass. All of the greens were squared off in the front too, not quite sure what that was about, but really strange. They did warn us that the greens were being reseeded, but that doesn' account for the terrible condition of the fairways. For $15 I would say that all I got was 181 tee shots

Poor greens

There should have been a sign or a verbal warning about the greens condition. It is a fine 100+ course which needs a lot of TLC

Could be an awesome course

Enjoyed the layout and location on the beach. Course was in horrendous condition. According to the employees it was "just treated." The greens were sandy and even if not sandy were patchy. Fairways were decent in most areas but were also patchy. Many areas couldn't even tell a difference between rough and fairway.
Would never recommend this course to anyone. Way overpriced and not even close to good condition.

No hassle

We enjoyed our game. I arrived and the attendant in the pro shop took my info, looked up my tee time, that was already recorded on his book and told us to have a good game. no hassle or stress. A great way to plan a golf game.
