About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2022.
Established in 1908, the Great Southern Golf Club overlooks the Gulf of Mexico as the oldest golf course in Mississippi. That helps explain the course's peculiar greens.
In 1999, Great Southern Golf Club was renovated by Brian Curly, who took pains to keep Ross' square greens and still satisfy the USGA's specifications. The greens are minuscule, undulating and hump-backed with deep swales in the middle of some and wild, unexpected slopes in others.
No. 6, for example, is a 250-yard par-4, which appears easy enough, but there are big oaks on both sides of the fairways, a small, elevated green that slopes sharply left to right and bunkers left, front and behind.
Great Southern Golf Club measures 6,278 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 117 and a 69.7 USGA rating. The course features three sets of tees for different skill levels.

Rude Staff
Played with a group of 5 and some guys in my party arrived 10 mins late for our tee time. The gentleman working the front desk was rude to my guest not understanding that they had simply forgotten their wallet at home. The greens are usually in good shape but this time they weren't in the best possible condition. Overall play was good and I'll play there again.
First Timer
Got a good deal on GolfNow so me and a friend decided to give it a try. I have never been but heard good things about the course. View of the Gulf of Mexico is awesome. The course was in decent shape considering the weather we have been having this time of year. It was somewhat windy, but that's to be expected when you play on the beach. The fairways need a little work and the course didn't seem to drain very well. All bunkers were full of water. Overall, the course is not extremely long and is pretty wide open. However, the placement of the sand traps and water hazards make this course challenging enough for golfers of all skill levels.
Great course with a view
This course is a great city course with a view of the ocean on a couple holes. Makes you feel like your playing on a ocean course. The course is wide open with minimal trees. Which makes it fun for a grip and rip type of day. We play this course about twice a year during our trips to Biloxi. Have had a great experience every time we have gone. The staff is freindly and treat you like you come in everyday. My only complaint is the lack of a cart girl but as long as you stock up at the bar before your round. Then the issue doesn't matter. All and all this is a great place for a relaxing golf round.
Good value
Forgiving course, wide and long fairways. Greens were hit or miss, but more often miss, overall they needed quite a bit of attention. Tee boxes were decently kept, one or two were actually immaculate. Par 3's were short, and the 5's were relatively long. In the middle of the back nine there were 3 par 5's in a row which I found to be a bit tiresome. Course had some standing water issues particularly on the back nine. Overall impresssion, the course is in need of some groundskeeping but still very enjoyable.
Terrific Design
This course was a very nice design. Conditions were average but not as noticeable because of the unique design. Pin placements were tucked the day we played. Very enjoyable.
Nostalgic
I appreciated the history of the course
fun day of golf
my fouesome had a beautiful day of golf.....laugh a lot and had fun.
Good course near the beach.
I showed up a little late for my 7:30am tee time and was able to play my solo round in about 3:30, after playing through one group. The fairway and greens were in good condition.
Very enjoyable!
Fairways and greens were in very good condition. Staff was most helpful and friendly. Really enjoyed the view of the gulf. Would definitely play this course again should the opportunity arise.
Decent and Beautiful course
Tees were great. Fairways were very good. With the exception of 7 the greens were pretty smooth and grown. Greens are square and tiny, so approach shots are tough. The best part of the course is that it is right along the Mississippi sound, so you get great views. The course is also divided by railroad tracks and there are also 3 par 5's in a row on the back 9.
Better every year
This is our 3rd year of playing here and every year it has got better
Congratulations to all the green staff on how well you're getting the course back to shape
Sprawling
The course is laid out nicely. One hole finishs then the other tee is right there. When we crossed the railroad tracks the next 9 holes were sprawling. Several over 400 yard holes.
course condition
The course was in bad to fair condition. The greens were in really bad condition
Could be so much better
I have played this course off and on since the early 1990's and was sad to see how the course has been neglected. I was fortunate enough to get paired up with 3 members on the back 9, who clued me in on much of what has occurred to the course since I last played there. In short order, this is a classic course with a nice design that is not being maintained. Greens were spotty and fairways were sparse. The course needs a competent greens keeper along with an infusion of money.
Course with a Gulf view
Even if you don't play well you will enjoy this course. Palm trees and a view of the Gulf of Mexico on the front nine. The length of the course is good for beginner to average golfers. Not a lot of trouble to get into.
1st timer
First time playing the course. Staff was extremely friendly. We started early so pace of play was great. Old course that was wide open with elevated, sloping greens on basically every hole. Other golfers were very friendly. Overall, a very enjoyable round. Would definitely return.
impressed
This course was a surprise....beautiful view and well maintained...disappointing that there was no driving range and the practice green and chipping green could have been better but all in all a fun wide open course. Deceivingly longer than the yardage and well placed deep bunkers to challenge approach shots and quick putting surfaces made this a fun experience. Staff could have been a little more appreciative
Great value for money.
We had a wonderfull time and enjoyed play golf there.
