About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2022.
Established in 1908, the Great Southern Golf Club overlooks the Gulf of Mexico as the oldest golf course in Mississippi. That helps explain the course's peculiar greens.
In 1999, Great Southern Golf Club was renovated by Brian Curly, who took pains to keep Ross' square greens and still satisfy the USGA's specifications. The greens are minuscule, undulating and hump-backed with deep swales in the middle of some and wild, unexpected slopes in others.
No. 6, for example, is a 250-yard par-4, which appears easy enough, but there are big oaks on both sides of the fairways, a small, elevated green that slopes sharply left to right and bunkers left, front and behind.
Great Southern Golf Club measures 6,278 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 117 and a 69.7 USGA rating. The course features three sets of tees for different skill levels.

Greens need work
This was a very enjoyable round, on a beautiful course with 2 holes playing towards the beach. The views are beautiful, I wish I could say the same for the greens. They are not terrible, but need a lot of work. The pace was good and everyone was very nice and helpful.
Oldest course on the Mississippi Coast
We love playing here. The staff is very frendly. The fairways drain very well even after a couple days of rain .
Fun Course
Very nice course. The hospitality was excellent. I really loved the square shaped greens and learning the history of the course. I would recommend playing here as the green fees are more than fair. Thanks for a great round.
Fun Course
Great Southern is a fovorite of mine. It's open fairways make is easier to find you ball after an errant T-shot and still hit the green.
Needs Work
Layout was fair. Challenging landing areas on some holes. Greens were in terrible shape. Some fairways appeared like they had not been cut in a while. Not a course for serious golfers.
Grear for a quick getaway
Very short, flat, easy course. Pace of play, for some strange reason was very very slow. Not sure if people don't believe in letting faster players through, or the timing of letting others tee off was way too close. Regardless, it's not a BEST course, it can be confusing, but it is flat with its own characteristics, which makes it fun. The layout seems simple, but you can find yourself into trouble easily. Probably my favorite part was the older gentleman that was SUPER FRIENDLY. He was such a pleasure and super helpful.
Love the course, but greens are terrible!
I really like this course for it's views of the gulf, but the greens are in terrible need for repair. Not only are most missing grass, several look diseased. I hope they take steps to fix this problem, because it's not worth playing, no matter the price.
Course has unbelievable potential
The course is full of history and potential. It is located on the beautiful Mississippi beach front. For what ever reason it is poorly maintained and the greens are in the worst condition I have ever seen them. We have several courses here on the Mississippi gulf coast that are great layouts and are very well maintained. I don't understand why this one is in such poor condition. It should be the flagship of golf on the ms golf coast. The twilight fees are 20 dollars and the course is worth that but not a penny more. Would love to see this course return to its hay day condition. Come on great southern. Grab the bull by the horns and make it happen. The community and the 5.7 million yearly visitors will support you all the way
Fun Experience
My Wife and I played this course on our vacation, played for $12.00 per person! thanks to golf now deals, thought the course had a fun and easy layout. The greens were rough and had patches on majority of their holes but the greens keeper at least does a good job of putting the holes away from the rough spots. Staff was very friendly and courteous to us, they had a great selection at the bar. Overall great experience and I will recommend it to anyone and we will be playing it again if we ever come back to Gulfport.
Fun Stuff
Have not played this course in quite some time but found it to be an enjoyable round.
Interesting and unique
There is a lot of history at this course. Unique design, some square greens. Inexpensive and has improved over past few years.
Rotten
Worst greens ever! You would have a better chance putting on asphalt. DON'T waste your money at this course.
Challenging water hazard and sand traps along with the windy conditions make this course fun to play. Greens and fairways need a lot of improvement.
