About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2022.
Established in 1908, the Great Southern Golf Club overlooks the Gulf of Mexico as the oldest golf course in Mississippi. That helps explain the course's peculiar greens.
In 1999, Great Southern Golf Club was renovated by Brian Curly, who took pains to keep Ross' square greens and still satisfy the USGA's specifications. The greens are minuscule, undulating and hump-backed with deep swales in the middle of some and wild, unexpected slopes in others.
No. 6, for example, is a 250-yard par-4, which appears easy enough, but there are big oaks on both sides of the fairways, a small, elevated green that slopes sharply left to right and bunkers left, front and behind.
Great Southern Golf Club measures 6,278 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 117 and a 69.7 USGA rating. The course features three sets of tees for different skill levels.

Good day on the course
Overall, we had a great day golfing at The Great Southern.
Greens could use some work
Can't beat it for the $. Greens are biggest issue, also some muddy spots.
Average course
Not as easy as score card would indicate. Greens not in great shape
Great Southern on the Gulf
It's winter play and for this time of year it's lots of fun. Staff are pleasant and helpful, well organized.
What more could one ask for!!!
Bill
Course was great
On the beach. Played 18 holes at a good pace nothing was wrong with any of the holes. Good place
very comfortable course
Each time I've played the conditions are better. It's only January! This vintage course is comfortable and well maintained.
Course OK
This course is ok it was more of a locals course. They allowed a 6 to play together which is always bad for the pace of play, no marshals which is a norm. All in all it was ok, nothing to jump up and down about. No driving Range. I wouldn't recommend if your going to Biloxi/Gulfport on vacation wanting to play somewhere nice. But if you live in the area this would be ok but only if it was always $39 with a cart.
Improving but still needs work
This is the 5th time I've played Great Southern and I see improvement every time I play there. Yes, it needs work but you can tell the pro is trying to improve the overall condition of the course. I only paid $14 so I wasn't expecting Augusta. I got what I paid for.
Winter Golf
Nothing overseeded.
Extremely slow play.
Some pin placements "RIDICULOUS".
Golfing in the Fog?
Thats right, it was so foggy that you could only see approx. 200 yds.. The starter asked everyone to yell fore after hitting. The course was in great shape seeing that it was December. The staff was extremely friendly.
I love this golf course
Layout is brilliant, short. Greens are well maintained and roll true.
Mississippi Golf
Donald ROSS LAYOUT! It had a great sense of what old golf tradition must have been. I hope to play it again.
Wide open course
I have played this course 10-15 times . I enjoy playing different courses . This course is pretty much wide open . Challenging in its own way but not one of the hardest around . The greens were in ok shape , some better than others . We had an early tee time and had gotten a great rate thru Golfnow . I do enjoy playing here and will probably be there again in the next couple of weeks .
Great fairways
The greens are pretty good but the fairways are great. The sand traps could use some work. It seems like they're always wet. It's a fun course. I will be back.
Great for a quick 18 hole round.
We played this course during vacation. Enjoyed the layout and would play again.
Historic course but there are maintenance issues.
I played at an exceptional rate. Henry in the Pro Shop is so helpful and friendly. The greens are ragged, slow and in need of a lot of maintenance. Sand traps were terrible, and also in need of a lot of maintenance. The rest of the course is really great and fun to play with some moderate challenges. The 19th hole has everything you will want for food and drink.
