Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.

The Golf Club at Vistoso in Tucson has never seemed willing to cower in the presence of its resort-course cousins. Paloma and Ventana are golf resorts, but the Golf Club at Vistoso is just a golf course, and a fine one at that. This Tom Weiskopf-designed layout was a "readers write-in" Golf Magazine's "Top 100 you can play," and is a "sneaky" favorite among locals and visitors alike. The layout is nowhere near as penal as Ventana or La Paloma, and if you can find better greens in the greater Tucson area, let us know. Take note of the 166-yard, par-3 third hole -- on a clear day (there are only 323 of them) you will have an amazing view of the north side of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Getting better but amenities need improvement

I am really happy to see that the new owners have brought this course back from the brink of disaster so quickly. It must have taken great effort and dedication. This is really a premium course that deserves to be managed properly and easily be among the top tier courses in Tuscon. That said, there are still some things to work on. The normal rate is $99, although we paid less by getting a hot deal with a late tee time. We actually teed off about 45 minutes early because very few people were on the course, which is unusual in Tucson for a Saturday on a beautiful 75 degree day. I think part of the reason is a bad rap from previous owners is still lingering. Part of it may be that the amenities are a little lacking. At the $99 price point I would not expect to pay for range balls, but we did. At the $99 price point I would expect a ball washer ( and club washer ) on the golf carts, but there were not any. There weren't any ball washers at all, period. Not on any tee box. There was no cart gal, with drinks and snacks. Even Saddlebrooke has that. And there was no Ranger, although it moved along well, but it's always good to see them to keep the riff raff moving. We didn't get a chance to get drinks and food afterward because there was a private party that took over the restaurant. They really need to expand the restaurant facilities so that private parties not not consume the entire restaurant. Overall I hope this course does well and keeps improving because I truly believe that this is one of the finest gems in Oro Valley.

The course was in fine shape and i,m not trying to put it down but playing the first time was not a lot of fun.Every hole had a blind shot and no way to figure out where to go,or where to lay up.
no gps on carts or guide on scorecard. Would have been nice to have a course guide.

This is a very nice course

I found the course to be a lot of fun in that there was a lot of desert between tee and fairway. Greens and fairways were well clipped and maintained. Views were spectacular.

Christmas at Vistoso

We had a great time out here. We had 2 carts with some trouble and one needing replacement. After a little delay in the pro shop (25 minutes) we could have finished before dusk.
This course is in great shape.
This is a shot makers course and the greens are fast and most are reasonable reads.
We wish we had more time to spend out on the veranda.

Chalanging for first timer.

Thankfully the person I was paired up with had played this course many times and gave me much assistance.
Disappointed the score card does not have a map of the course on the back. It was difficult, as a first timer, to figure out the direction to head on many holes.

Construction zone

This is a beautiful, challenging course and the views on the front nine were as good as it gets. Due to significant development within the subdivision, the back nine is surrounded by construction and constant noise- makes it hard to enjoy. I great course, but you need to know what to expect.

Great shape and great views

A very nice track, in great condition. An enjoyable round, great views on the surrounding mountains. The greens rolled nicely for this time of year, I'd play the course again next time I'm in the Tucson area.

SHHHHH!

This is by far the best bargain in Tucson but I expect it to be getting more expensive soon. The layout of this course is as nice as Ventana Canyon but half the price. It is hard to justify playing anywhere else. Conditions are a notch below Ventana (which are the best in Tucson) but not that much. Greens are good but could use more attention to repairing ballmarks. Better than National or Dove Mountain. Number 8 is one of my favourite holes in the region. Only gripe is they need to get the distances correct for number 14? The hole may play as 320 as a dogleg but the distance to the end of the fairway is not 220 yds. I think 160 max. Would not be too much trouble to put up a sign or to show this. After my first round there this left a very bad taste for all four of us. Similar issue on 16 with respect to the end of the fairway. Leave yourself no less than 110 yds for your layup. Not sure what the distance is to end of the fairway with your drive on 18 but 260 seems like too much club. There may be a couple of other examples that need the information posted. Hopefully the new management gets this information posted. It will keep you coming back.

I'll go back

They weren't going to honor the package I bought through golf now, which included golf, cart, range and lunch. It was a hassle dealing with then upon check in and then again after my round to get my lunch. Greens were in terrible shape, my golf cart was in need of repair and the other guys with me theirs rhe battery went dead. I like this course and I really wish they would get it together.

We had two carts in our group, and one of them dies as well at #14. I've seen several comments in this regard. Perhaps all the carts need an overhaul?

True Desert Course

I lucked into a great Hot Deal on this course and couldn't pass it up even though it was a bit out of my way to get to. It was also a great way to spend my afternoon before Christmas Eve. The course was in immaculate condition. The winter grass was fully matured in the fairways and the greens were very fast and challenging. Each hole was a bit of an adventure as they all included desert carries--some having multiple carries. Do not expect miracles when you play this course for the first time as it has a high level of difficulty and takes getting acquainted with before you can expect to do well. For the skilled golfer, however, this is an excellent challenge.

New management doing a good job.

Played course 15-20 times last year. First time since new management group. Was glad to see some familiar faces still on board. No more free range balls with greens fee but that is my only complaint. Course in excellent shape. Four tees so everyone can play. If you're in Tucson it is a must!

GOOD WINTER CONDITIONS

Course is in much better shape than last winter. Fairways are in good shape with over-seeding. Greens are a little thin, but rolling good. Course managers ought to instruct users on fixing ball marks.

well worth it

lots of blind shots and forced carries, my playing partners were not the best companions and we had to keep searching for balls on every hole.one even quit after nine holes as he was playing so bad .the course was very busy which added to the slow play BUT I wil always come and play it every year. well kept and staff very friendly.

New ownership

The course is finally getting the maintenance it deserves. The new operator (OB Sports) has corrected lots of the deferred maintenance areas. The course just went thru receivership so the new owner (effective 01/10/15) will continue improving the course and clubhouse.

We will play again in Jan 2015 and will post an updated review.

hit em straight

a very challenging desert course. Don't play the back tees if you have less than 220 carry. you need to pick your landing areas carefully on all but a few holes. Both my son and I rate this as our favourite course in the tucson area.
