love this place. right down to the tees they put in the cart for me,ice cooler on the cart. I get a lot of run on the fairways that helps.the greens are fast but fair.the only thing I have a problem with are the sand traps, but I saw they were starting to work on that. I pass a lot of golf courses on my 30 mile drive from mira mesa to get here but I find it worth it.

Quite a few sand traps were unplayable, no sand, not even addressed, some were ok .

We thoroughly enjoyed this links type course. If your shot is shot in the correct direction it flys forever.

At the end of the day the course is fun. Conditions were not great and the greens were recovering from being punched recently (which was not stated when making tee time.) The course isn't marked very well and with the dry conditions it can be hard to figure out where you are trying to hit the ball. A couple of holes bothered me. 16 has a fairway that just will not hold a proper tee shot. The slope of the fairway is such that a well placed shot still falls off to the left. 12 is an awkward par 5 that plays 563 from the tips, but with dry windy conditions means you can't hit a drive more than 200 yards without being punished. Again better marking on the course would help here. Another issue was pace of play. When I arrived the staff said the tee was clear and I could play when I was ready. This was great except the same thing was said to the twosome, single, and twosome that I eventually caught up with.

Play was so slow I thought about just going home and watching the grass grow in the backyard. That may have seemed faster than golf today. I'm going to blame the group of 6 playing in front of us. Yes you heard it right....6. At least only half of them hit OB off every tee.

Course is in poor shape. Not enough water. Slow play.

No one in pro shop bothered to mention the all greens had all been recently aerated. Got to the back nine and sure enough, the fairways were being aerated as well.

I've played Salt Creek several times over the years and have always enjoyed the links style layout. The staff is friendly and the course is in average shape. However, on April 12th I played there and it had just been aeriated. That wasn't mentioned on the tee time listing. The rate was ok but I would have waited a couple of weeks and played somewhere else today. Hopefully it was just an oversight by either Golfnow or Salt Creek. In the future, I will call there before I book the time to check the green conditions.

for the closes lay-out to a real links course in San Diego Salt Creek is very good. Can be very
challenging.

No 5 stars because the traps have no sand, just dirt. Other than that, the course was in great shape (as good as it could be with limited water conditions). The layout was very nice, fairly straight and open, very nice distances - you will hit every club in your bag. Challenging par 3's, some friendly par 4's to score on, and a couple holes where you really had to think out your shots. Greens are perfect. Staff was great also, the guy in the pro shop went to grab me coffee when I got there in the morning because no one was at the bar, very nice guy. I would definitely recommend and I will play there again.

The course conditions are just average, but I do like the greens, they roll fast and true. I would recommend that you play salt creek and compare the greens to your home course.

Course was in good shape. Watch out for certain areas though as there are rocks that can damage your clubs. Bunkers are also rock solid on all the holes. Fairways were pretty well kept and the greens rolled very smooth.

We didn't have the best of time though. Took us 3 hours to finish the front 9. Luckily we finished the second 9 in ~2.25 hours because a few groups in front of us gave up and left 30 minutes before sunset.

I really enjoyed this course - one of two in the greater San Diego area that could be loosely tagged as having links-like qualities. Fast, challenging greens, open design, elevation changes, some blind tee shots, good views, and approachable, fun to play, all in a moderate to value price point.

The only downsides I'd say is 1) that most of the holes are relatively straight (I don't recall any major dog legs or many considerable turns) and 2) slow play was awful on President's Day. While the slow play was expected (5.5 hours for 18 holes), it was the lack of visible presence the employees of the course took to improve slow play that detracted from the experience.

Oh by the way, good hot dogs and sandwiches at the turn, too.

Really liked this course. Beautiful scenery and course in excellent condition.

I do think they could improve it slightly by making it slightly more forgiving. Maybe I feel this way because it was my first time playing there, but I took quite a few penalty strokes (and I rarely take more than 1 or 2 in a round) for balls slightly mishit that rolled through fairways, through the little bit of ruff that was there and then into an unplayable area.

The greens were in excellent condition, but tough. I had a bunch of 3 putts, which is unusual for me. I attribute this to the greens being a bit harder and less receptive than ideal. It was difficult for me to get as close as I normally do to the pins... and I was almost always hitting shots from relatively close (as I almost never hit greens in regulation.)

So my suggestion, if anyone who can make changes is interested in hearing, would be to...

1. Let the rough grow longer in all or at least more of the areas (there are a lot) where slight mishits can get held up before going into hazards or unplayable areas. In other words, just give us a little more room. Maybe put some bunkers in those spots to stop ball from rolling into unplayable areas.

2. Put more sand in the bunkers. Most of the bunkers were hard... i saw several balls in our group roll or land in and then roll or bounce out of bunkers.

3. Make greens a little more receptive. I don't know how you do that (more water?) I think the speed of the greens were perfect, nice and fast... I'm okay with tough greens, (and these are) but in my opinion they could be just a bit more receptive.

All that being said... I really enjoyed my round and will definitely play here again (although it is a pretty long drive for me to get there from LA.)

I definitely recommend it if you are in the area. You will absolutely enjoy your round... even though you will feel like you played slightly better than your final score.

This course is good formally level of golfers. It will challenge you and offer a pleasant environment for a day of golf!

With a GolfNow "Hot Deal" plus applying bonus points reward, we paid less than half the rack rate. Had we paid full rate I'd have been sorely disappointed.
As it was, I was merely mostly disappointed. Our 2-some was behind a 5-some and thus incurred numerous delays. There was no starter on the first tee, resulting in the 4-some behind claiming they had a 12:15 tee time while ours was at 12:18 -- 9 minutes intervals being the norm, groups in front of us slotted at 12:00 and 12:09. On an 80 + degree day there was no beverage cart on the course (although there were water jugs at decent intervals). At the turn, a server in the clubhouse said, "We weren't expecting to be busy."
The course touts itself as a "links course". I discovered that to mean no trees!! Course conditions were below standards we've come to expect from having other courses at this time of the year. Particularly poor were the "sand traps" -- in quotation marks because they lacked sand, being hard-packed dirt with a goodly assortment of pebbles.
Our experience with Salt Creek golf course was such that we see no need to return.

I hadn't played here for almost a year and I'm happy to say that course conditioning seems to be on the upswing. They even had a decent amount of sand in the traps which has always been my biggest area of complaint. The fairways continue to be rock hard so the ball runs on and on forever. That's a good thing as long as you stay in play which requires that you favor the high side of any fairway that slopes even a little bit. Always an interesting round even if you lose a few balls.
