Red Tail Golf Club
About
Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Massachusetts sprawls across wooded hills, weaving through numerous streams and ponds. It is the first course in New England to be certified as an Audubon International Cooperative Signature. Golfers can enjoy spectacular views from every hole. Named after the Red Tail Hawks that soar above the golf course, the landscape offers classic New England golf with maple trees, birches, oaks, and pines. There are also tall grasses and sand along the fairways and greens, providing a few elements of coastal courses. The Red Tail layout offers a great amount of variety thanks to the diverse landscape. There is an interesting mix of risk-reward opportunities and link-style touches throughout the course. It is no surprise that this scenic and challenging course is one of the most popular public golf courses in Massachusetts.

Signs of course condition improvement abound, like the sod cutouts here on the par-5 2nd. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 05/03/2021

Nice layout but needs work on traps
I liked the layout but, the greens were being protected form the
heat by not cutting them, therefore they were extremely slow. The
sand traps had rocks in them.
many great shots to be made here
great layout , fairways were very good but the greens slow and
bumpy (not as I recalled)fighting a bacteria
Finally played Red Tail
I had been wanting to play this course for about 6-7 years but for some reason never did until yesterday. It's known to be "the best course you can play" in MA so I was very much looking forward to this round. It didn't quite live up to my expectations for a $100 golf course an hour outside of the city. Some of the greens were actually in rough shape which was shocking. Many we're perfect. The fairways are phenomenal. The bunkers are challenging and attractive surrounded either but deep lush rough or fescue. Te areas around the cart paths were worn in areas which you usually don't see at courses with this distinction. I'm still not sure how I feel about the "waste areas." Is that Red Tail's trademark? It's kind of ugly. The nature preserve areas serve as a great hazard but the rocky bunkers that they call waste areas look somewhat like the course is unfinished. Overall I liked Red Tail. I think had I gotten a better rate through golf now I would have liked it more, but I played on a Sat morning in July. I would rank red tail below The International (Oaks) and Shaker Hills as far as public courses you can play west of Boston.
Tough greens
Played this course many times. This was the worst I ve seen the greens. Good value at $75 but I wouldn't pay more until the conditions improve. It's been a long time since I considered the best public course n MA.
Redtail @ Devens,Ma
Great course and very challenging however greens good be better maintained especially after all the rain we have had here, many of the surrounding courses greens have been far superior fairways were excellent.
worth the visit
a very nice course with rolling fairways and good undulating greens. I try to play this course whenever I am in the area.
The Course is wonderful...one of the best layouts I've played. (of course I'm used to "Flat" Florida golf...)
The course was awesome! But there was hardly anyone out there (which is great!) BUT, the fact they wanted to make a huge deal out of my girlfriend riding in the cart with me, when the quantity of carts wasn't an issue, became an issue. I didn't pay $80 for a round of golf to get hassled over nothing.
Totally Overrated
Greens were slow, bumpy, burnt out and lots of ball marks. This course has gone down hill and I will not go back. Can't believe they are asking $99 for this course.
Good mix of holes
Nice course. It seems a bit overpriced but I'm not from around there so don't know what kind of competition they have. Played the next to longest tees and got to use most of the clubs in my bag. Some tight driving holes - some more generous, and a few of the pin positions were silly, but they are probably just trying to manage green wear and tear, . Lots of undulation in greens. Plenty of sand. Bunkers and greens in good shape. Wouldn't recommend walking unless you like climbing hills. Local knowledge would have helped with some of the crazy slopes and bounces around the greens, so If you can figure out all of that you should score well.
Fairways and tees were in excellent shape
there were few fairway yardages -
no drink cart -
the greens were a little too hairy -
fairways in great condition -
some sandtraps were not well raked -
Happy I played the course.
Was able to get on very early on a sunday which worked out perfectly. The group I played with were regulars and enjoyable to play with. Course was in good condition and was difficult but fair and mixed in some interesting holes. Range was adequate and it was nice to have it all included. My only complaint is that I like to walk courses and this is not really a walkable course but that is a matter of personal preference. I would play again but would be hesitant to play later in the day because I could see this course slowing down as the day goes on.
One of the top public courses in MA
My favorite course within an hour of Boston. I love courses that challenge every part of a golfer's game, and you're likely to play every club in your bag here. The price during primetime is a little high, but during these long days of summer, the twilight rates are a great deal. I was able to take my time and play in a little over 3 hours on a Friday afternoon. You're likely to see holes here that are different than anything you've ever seen, esp. #7, 9, 14, 16, and 17. All the par 3's have elevated tees and are beautiful. My only complaint was that the course was a little damp, but that would be nitpicking.
Also a must play in the fall, the foliage is amazing.
Beautiful layout
Red Tail is an excellent course and an excellent test of your golfing ability. Everything was in great shape except a few of the greens were a tad off (probably due to all the rain lately, so they were slow from not being cut). Lots of elevation and diversity of holes. The par 3s are all excellent and for a course where very little water comes into play it is still really challenging. For the normal 99 cost I would say its a bit pricey but for the golfnow rate we got it was a great deal.
Great layout
The course was not busy as the rest of the group that had the same time had already gone out. Due to recent heavy rains the course was not playing as fast as it probably does, in particular the greens. Like the fact that the range is all part of the package.
this a beautiful golf course
Red Tail is a highly hyped course and lives up to its billing. it's
an imaginative but fair lay-out, which requires every club in the bag. I particularly liked the par 3's . You cannot escape the beauty of this course. You can score if you keep it in play.
I found the greens to be somewhat uneven speed wise and patchy, and found that the practice green was faster than the greens.
One of the BEST around!
Red Tail continues to be in great condition. The course is interesting and challenging while still being fair. Range of tees makes it an enjoyable experience for a variety of golfers.
great course
wide and generous fairways and greens. The course is the definition of 'manucure'. The view from the elevated tee offs is often spectacular.
Fantastic
Waited 2 yrs. to play this course, worth the wait and more. The best public course a golfer can play. Will play this course many more times, just sorry i don't live closer to Red Tail.
Great course but...
Great course but can only afford to play usually through golfnow only.
Nice course, poor greens
Played here several times. Course is decently maintained, but certainly not worth the regular, full price rate for a couple reasons:
1) The greens were bumpy and extremely slow
2) The grass tees at their range were closed, again
Nice course, but I fear it's on the decline.
On the upside, we played a quick Wed afternoon round. Weekend play is slower. Count on 4.5-5 hours.
