Behind the 18th green Photo submitted by sschrank66 on 10/01/2012
Not bad, not great
Played this round with family and had a very enjoyable round. This time of the year I don't expect a course to be hitting on all cylinders and this one was no exception. The greens need a little care, there are two courses at this facility and The River course is the only one open so I'm sure it is seeing extra play which is affecting the ability of greens to recover. On top of the fact it's winter, this undoubtedly contributed to the condition of the greens. Probably a 5 out of 10 for greens. Some of the greens are hard to hit because they are elevated on all sides and a foot left or right can lead to a long roll down the hill. The rest of the course was in fine condition. Just what you expect so I was pleased with it.
The staff was very friendly. The bag man met us and helped us get our clubs on the carts, gave us the brief verbal tour of the course and clued us in on a couple of Eagles to watch for in the sky. Nice to see our national bird in the wild. The young lady at the counter was great in the clubhouse and helped jump a dead battery after the round! if she hadn't have helped, we may have had to play another 18 waiting on assistance.
My biggest complaint or recommendation for this facility is that it needs better tools to help explain the layout. Once you leave the second hole, there are a bunch of blind shots. Shots over water, shots over ravines, shots with water hidden or unseen from the tee box. The only tool available is the crude rendering of the course on the back of the score card. Several times we hit shots only to find out there was water at 200 yards or a ravine at 150 yards. This course is a resort course with plenty of first time players. Better course information while ON THE COURSE would enhance the experience 10 fold. Nothing like hitting a 275 yard drive to find it has landed in the water you can't see from the box.
This is the RIVER course, keep that in mind. A river runs through it!
great place to play
I really enjoyed the course and would recommend it to anyone
Golfing in Gatlingurg
First time to ever play River course really enjoyed it lots of different challenging holes even saw a Bald Eagle on one of the holes by the river made my day .Even though it was November greens and fairways still in good shape will be back to play more rounds .
Fun but fair
The most difficult 6,000+ yard (white tees) course I've ever played. First green established a rule with our group that 3 putts were maximum. Fun, scenic layout, especially the back nine.
Sevierville GC/River Course
Staff are super nice. Great driving range and several putting greens. Multiple tee boxes based on your handicap. Greens are very fast, but still manageable for all skill levels. One of the nicest golf courses in the Gatlinburg/Sevierville area. Highly recommended.
Very nice lat out
I played the River course , it has a lot of tough holes very challenging ! Played well , hit very water shot . Had a real good outing . Course look very nice well taken care of ... Can't wait to play it again .
M streaker
pro shop personal not up to par
I talked to the lady in the pro shop 3 times the day before I played and she nor the person behind the counter advise me that they had recently punched the greens and repaired about to feet of the sod around most of the greens , greens were bumpy and sandy around the collars, but they did not have a problem charging me the full price of $59 when they had it on golf now for a discount but since I was visiting from out of town , they would not honor golf now , play river Island instead, I was very disappointed
excellent condition
This was our first time playing the river course (had played the highlands previously). First of all the course was in excellent condition, as far as all the basics go (tee boxes, fairways), but the greens had just been punched two days prior to our playing it, so its hard to comment much on those, but i got the impression they were kept in as pristine condition as the rest of the course. I was actually surprised by how much fun the course was to play. I thought it was just pretty flat, back and forth, but it had a lot of subtle details about it that made it interesting. about 13 or 14 of the holes were fairly flat along the river basin, but then for a nice change of pace there were 4 or 5 holes on the backside that went up into the ridges on the backside of the course. Back to the greens, i suspect the greens are the true defense of this course, when they're playing under normal conditions that is. Alot of bunkers guard alot of greens and fairways as well. On the course map, it looks as though water could be a real issue, but while there is lots of water winding throughout the course, its really not a super important issue in most cases with the exceptions of a couple of holes. I would call the course very fair for an average golfer, though again, id suspsect the greens could run up some high scores, but rough isnt brutal, fairways are wide enough. It was just a really nice course to play. As far as the price, the price we got on golfnow was well worth it and then some. Im not sure what the normal price is to play it
Wonderful fairways, tired greens, magnificent views.
We played early afternoon with no tee time but got right out. The senior rate is a nice touch. Everyone was friendly and helpful but not overbearing. The tees an fairways are close to perfect, but the greens show the signs of a long summer and lots of play. However, the ball rolled true. Lots of variety in the holes despite a mostly level tract.
No trees in play
You can't bang it off the tee on every hole....some tight holes..very nice
A great value
Played this course 3 or 4 times during my stay in East Tenn. The course was in great shape and the staff was accommodating.
The greens challenge you to putt your best. They are slick without being tricked up. The only improvement suggestion I have is more signage...the course routes around certain holes and it is a long drive if you make a mistake.
Worth the cost of play which is modest for the quality of the product. The views of the Smokies are great so turn around on the tees and enjoy.
Challenging course.
Great course that is well maintained. Challenging and fun to play.
great resort course with difficult greens
The course was immaculate and a bit challenging due to the speed and undulating greens, I did not have one flat putt in the entire round. However, I definitely recommend the course.
Great value
Played the River course. Took the starters recommendation and went up one tee since it was my first visit. Best advice is to hit it straight and know your distance to water and fairway bunkers. Lots of water. Greens held well and putted true. A great deal for $20.
Enjoyed the great scenery and had many challenging holes
Excellent venue tee to green . Green were undulating and fast . Enjoy the staff and the playing the River .
A value for the money
Nice course, great staff and good conditions make this a great value. I must say I prefer the Highlands Course to the RIver but to each their own.
Suggestions for this course
All holes 90 degrees and some cart path only. For first time players, would be nice to have some tips or pro guide what to expect of the holes.
Championship Golf in the Smokies
The course is absolutely in perfect condition. Tees, fairways, roughs and greens are all perfectly manicured. The pace of play was great and the beverage cart lady made her rounds with regularity. Thank goodness as it was hot and humid. I just wish that the putting green had holes instead of the stakes to putt at. We did see a soaring bald eagle on the first hole.
Very nice course
This was a very nice course to play kinda challenging in many ways too. When I come back to tenn I will play the highlands course so that I can play them both.
River Course was great
I have played this course before. Last time was after alot of rain so the fairways weren't in good condition. This time the course was almost perfect. The greens were also in great condition.
The front 9 play a bit different than the back. On the back 9, there are more hills, and terraced tee boxes. The par 3's with elevated tees were a challenge to me, but I did well.
I am a higher handicap player and loved that they have the white tee box for the players like me, and helps me have a better score. Great day of play.
